How do I fix Calls, iMessage or FaceTime issues on my iPhone?

Using an iPhone and are unable to make or receive calls, or are experiencing one of the following issues with iMessage or FaceTime?

  • iMessages or FaceTime calls are being made from your temporary mobile number

Or

  • Seeing one of these error messages:

    • “Waiting for activation”

    • “Activation unsuccessful”

    • “An error occurred during activation”

    • ”This Phone Number Cannot Be Used by iMessage and FaceTime.”

What do I need to do?

I can’t make or receive calls on my iPhone:

  1. Make sure your iPhone software is up to date.

Here’s how:

  1. Open ‘Settings’.

  2. Tap ‘General’.

  3. Tap ‘Software Update’.

  4. If you have an iOS update available, tap ‘Install Now’. If you see ‘Download and Install’ instead, tap it to download the update, enter your passcode, then tap ‘Install Now’. Having issues updating? Check out this Apple Support article for more information.

  5. If you see ‘iOS is up to date’ - you’re good to go!

If you’ve confirmed that your iPhone is updated, yet can’t make calls, follow these steps to get back on track:

 

  1. Enable 4G (LTE) and 4G (VoLTE) Calling.

Before enabling 4G (VoLTE) Calling, 4G MUST be enabled. To check, simply follow the steps below:

  1. Open ‘Settings’.

  2. Tap ‘Mobile Service’.

  3. Tap ‘Mobile Data options’.

  4. If you have a 5G capable iPhone, tap ‘5G Auto’ or ‘5G On’. If you have a 4G capable iPhone, tap ‘4G’.

  5. If you have a ‘VoLTE’ toggle, ensure this is switched ON.

 

  1. Re-enter your Mobile Number.

In most cases, re-entering your Mobile Number on your iPhone can resolve issues with calls:

  1. Open ‘Settings’.

  2. Tap ‘Apps’.

  3. Tap ‘Phone’.

  4. Tap ‘My Number’.

  5. Enter your mobile number, using +44 instead of the first 0.

  6. Tap ‘Save’.

 

  1. Check signal strength & network outages.

You can view the signal strength in your area with our helpful coverage checker and use the status checker to find out about any ongoing network maintenance activities or outages in your area. If you have an approved handset, enable Wi-Fi Calling for the best experience.

  1. Force restart your iPhone.

The classic switch it off and switch it back on again. If you’re unsure how to force restart your iPhone, please refer to this Apple Support article.

 

  1. Toggle Airplane mode.

Switch on Airplane mode for 60 seconds. After 60 seconds, switch Airplane mode off.

 

  1. Perform a Manual Roam.

A manual roam resets your connection to our network, and can help with intermittent network problems. Here’s how:

  1. Open Settings.

  2. Tap ‘Mobile Service’.

  3. Tap ‘Network Selection’.

  4. Turn off the ‘Automatic toggle’.

  5. Choose a different network (Vodafone, EE or O2 - UK).

  6. Wait for 1 minute.

  7. Switch the automatic toggle back on.

 

  1. Clean your SIM card.

If you’re still experiencing issues, you can also try removing, cleaning (with a microfibre cloth), and reinserting your SIM card.

 

  1. Dial this shortcode.

Open your Phone app and dial the below number to deactivate any call barring: #330*0000#

 

  1. Using multiple SIMs? Set your iD Mobile SIM to primary.

For VoLTE to work, your iD Mobile SIM must be set as the ‘Primary’ SIM.

  1. Open Settings.

  2. Tap ‘Mobile Service’.

  3. Tap ‘Default Voice Line’.

  4. Select your iD Mobile SIM.

 

  1. Perform a Network Settings Reset.

As a last resort, perform a Network Settings Reset on your iPhone. Here’s how:

  1. Open ‘Settings’.

  2. Tap ‘General’.

  3. Tap ‘Transfer or Reset iPhone’.

  4. Tap ‘Reset’.

  5. Select ‘Reset Network Settings’.

  6. Enter your passcode, then tap ‘Reset Network Settings’.

 

Please note: Resetting network settings will erase saved Wi-Fi networks and VPN settings. After the reset, you will need to re-enter Wi-Fi passwords and configure any other network settings as needed.

 

  1. Test your SIM in another phone.

Remove your SIM and pop it into another phone. If you can make or receive calls on the other phone, then your iPhone might have a fault and may need repair. Check out this Community article for more helpful information.

 

Please note: Ensure the other phone you use to test is on our list of approved handsets.

 

If you’re unable to make or receive calls on the other phone, pop your SIM back into your iPhone and contact us for further support.

 

My iMessage or FaceTime is not working on my iPhone:

  1.  Make sure your iPhone software is up to date.

Here’s how:

  1. Open ‘Settings’.

  2. Tap ‘General’.

  3. Tap ‘Software Update’.

  5. If you see ‘iOS is up to date’ - you’re good to go!

If you’ve confirmed that your iPhone is updated, yet iMessage or FaceTime still doesn’t work, follow these steps to get back on track:

 

  1. Check Date & Time.

iMessage will only activate if the Date & Time is set correctly on your iPhone. Here’s how to double check:

  1. Open ‘Settings’.

  2. Tap ‘General’.

  3. Tap ‘Date & Time’.

  4. Ensure the ‘Set Automatically’ toggle is switched ON.

 

  1. Re-enter your Mobile Number.

In most cases, re-entering your Mobile Number on your iPhone can resolve issues with iMessage and FaceTime.

  1. Open ‘Settings’.

  2. Tap ‘Apps’.

  3. Tap ‘Phone’.

  4. Tap ‘My Number’.

  5. Enter your mobile number, using +44 instead of the first 0.

  6. Tap ‘Save’.

 

  1. Deactivate iMessage and FaceTime.

Still having issues? You’ll need to deactivate & reactivate iMessage & FaceTime. To deactivate iMessage & FaceTime, follow these steps:

  1. Open ‘Settings’.

  2. Tap ‘Messages’.

  3. Tap ‘Send & Receive’.

  4. Ensure all mobile numbers and emails are unchecked. Then, tap your Apple ID.

  5. Tap ‘Sign Out’. Go back to the previous page.

  6. Tap the toggle to turn off iMessage. Go back to the previous page.

  7. Tap ‘FaceTime’.

  8. Ensure all mobile numbers and emails are unchecked. Then, tap your Apple ID.

  9. Tap ‘Sign Out’.

  10. Tap the toggle to turn off FaceTIme. Go back to the previous page.

The above steps should unlink the number from your Apple iD, you can check by going into ‘Settings’, selecting your Apple ID at the top of the screen and tapping ‘Sign-In & Security’.

 

  1. Force Restart your iPhone.

 If you’re using a Physical SIM card, remove your iD Mobile SIM, but pop your SIM tray back into your iPhone. If you’re using an eSIM, go to Settings → Mobile Services → Select your iD eSIM → Switch the ‘Turn On This Line’ toggle to OFF. Then force restart your iPhone. For iPhone 8 and newer, here’s how:

  1. Press and quickly release the volume up button.

  2. Press and quickly release the volume down button.

  3. Press and hold the side button.

  4. When the Apple logo appears, release the side button.

If you have an iPhone 7 or older, follow the steps in this Apple Support article to restart your iPhone

 

  1. Reactivate iMessage & FaceTime.

Once your iPhone restarts, connect to a stable Wi-Fi network and wait 30 minutes. After 30 minutes, pop your iD Mobile SIM back into your iPhone, or toggle your eSIM back ON. To reactivate iMessage & FaceTime, follow these steps:

  1. Open ‘Settings’.

  2. Tap ‘Messages’.

  3. Tap the toggle to turn on iMessage.

  4. Tap your mobile number. Then tap ‘Done’.

  5. Tap ‘Send & Receive’.

  6. Tap ‘Use your Apple ID for iMessage’. Go back to the previous page.

  7. Tap ‘FaceTime’.

  8. Tap ‘Use your Apple ID for FaceTime’.

In most cases, your iMessage & FaceTime should activate straight away, but in some cases it can take up to 48 hours. It might be tempting, but don’t toggle iMessage or FaceTime off & on again during this time as this will reset the activation.

 

  1. Restart your iPhone.

 If after 48 hours iMessage or FaceTime has not activated, restart your iPhone. For iPhone 8 and newer, here’s how:

  1. Press and quickly release the volume up button.

  2. Press and quickly release the volume down button.

  3. Press and hold the side button.

  4. When the Apple logo appears, release the side button.

If you have an iPhone 7 or older, follow the steps in this Apple Support article to restart your iPhone

 

  1. Still not working?

If you’ve tried all the steps and your iMessage or FaceTime has not activated, try resetting your Network Settings. This won’t delete any personal information from your iPhone, such as Contacts or Photos, but you will have to reconnect to any previously joined Wi-Fi networks. Here’s how:

  1. Open ‘Settings’.

  2. Tap ‘General’.

  3. Tap ‘Transfer or Reset iPhone’.

  4. Tap ‘Reset’.

  5. Tap ‘Reset Network Settings’.
