Data allowance and usage

I have a plan giving me 1GB data, which is generally fine, sometimes 1.3GB or 1.2GB but I had a 4GB add on to deal with the slight monthly increase.  However, my latest bill showed 5.55GB usage.  I don’t stream videos and only occasionally listen to the radio, so have no idea why the sudden increase. 

I went through my apps and turned of background data usage on every app.

New month new allowance 1GB plus a new 12 month data add on of 8GB for emergencies.

Having just checked via my phone settings data usage from 1 Jan to 6th Jan usage = 24.34MB.

However, data usage on my dashboard at idmobile website says I have used 4GB.

How can this be in only 6 days?  Something is not correct.
