Call or text French number

I am in France and am having no trouble calling or texting home. However, when I called a French telephone number I was unable to connect, so I tried texting but was unable send the message. My wife tried on her ID mobile phone with the same result both for call and text. I eventually managed to send a WhatsApp message (desperation because this lady was not on any of my groups and I had to start a new group) All very frustrating. I have never had a problem before with providers other than ID mobile. I am currently connected to F-Bouygues Telecom who I have found ultra reliable in the past.

To call a French mobile number from the UK, you can dial 00 33, then the French phone number without the first zero. For example, to call 06 12 34 56 78, you would dial 00 33 6 12 34 56 78.

You can also use the + sign instead of 00 to indicate the international access code

Yes I am aware of how to use international dialling. I tried using 0033 and +33 in front of the French number with a zero knocked off. It did not work. However, using Whatsapp I finally got a message through using 0033 and then the number (minus first zero). So I am still mystified. It seemed to me as though I was not allowed international calls. I’ve looked on my ID mobile profile but cannot find anything that I should have signed up for to enable international calling. I am a long term ID mobile customer on contract.
