Can I roam in EU for 6 months if I use no data ?

I will travel to EU for the next 6-12 months and while I will be having a different phone number for local purposes I need to keep my UK number active for this duration only for the purposes of receiving calls and texts. Almost every single account I have online has my number tied to it and then there’s everyone else in the UK that will contact me on my UK number . 
I plan on using an eSIM so that I don’t carry 2 phones with me all day. Is this possible ? Do I need to be in a specific plan, will pay as you go work ? 
I plan on porting my number to iD Mobile and not sure what to choose.

    Do you intend to use a PAYG plan or pay monthly plan? Which country will you be in, as you may be able to continue to use your plan as normal, depending which country you are going to?
