Question

How do I stretch my 63 days EU roaming allowance?

We are doing several longer trips to the EU in our motorhome this year and I’m trying to get confirmation of how I can stretch out my roaming usage, so I don’t exceed the 63 days allowed within any 4 month period. I’ve already used 51 days in February and March. Now we’re home for about 5 weeks and then heading out again early May, to be away 6-8 weeks. If I understand correctly, I can have roaming turned off for most of the days in the  EU (instead using WIFI or hotspot off another device) and carefully count the days when I use my data allowance, to make sure I stay within the 63 days.

BUT as far as I understand, I can still make and receive calls and text messages while data roaming is turned off? If someone was to call or text me, would that be counted as a “roaming day” by ID – or is it only data roaming days that count?

If I was to exceed the 63 days, at what point would I get the 14 days warning? Once I am being charged for EU roaming, I assume I could make sure not to use any data, but still use the phone for calls and texts, since the penalty charges for these are very reasonable (whereas the data roaming could quickly get very expensive).

Hi @CeciliaH

The period would begin once your first usage roaming happens, turning it off for a few days may not stop the counter per say.

As the page mentions, once you reach 14 days before the 63rd day, (49th day) we’ll send you a text.
