Inaccurate Data Roaming

I arrived in the Netherlands on Monday 21 October. I had accumulated a 7Gb data allowance on my plan, because of minimal usage. Within 24 hours, the entire allowance was used and in the app it showed I had no data left for the rest of the month. But there is no way I used that much data. In fact, when I go into my phone setting and check the data usage there, it tells me I used 98.90Mb (ie not even 1 Gb) of data between 30 Sept and today (24 October). I would expect there to be perhaps some discrepancy between what my phone considers data use and what IDmobile measures as data use. But I would not expect such a massive difference. Not happy. Any help appreciated. This has happened before. As far as I can tell, data roaming in the NL is included in my plan.

Are you able to post a screenshot (without any personal/account information) of what the app is advising?

 

Do you also have a spend cap set up?

There you are, apologies I only just saw your message. The app showed that zero data remaining after I spent 24h ie one day in Amsterdam. Usually in the UK I have data left over each month so when I set off to Amsterdam I had 7GB of data available. This was apparently used up in one day, even though I was using airport WiFi and WiFi in my accommodation. During the day I only used one public transport app and used my phone for a couple of payments on public transport. There's no way I used 7GB. I had to purchase a data pack with 3 to allow be to roam, at a cost of £10.

And finally, this has happened every time I've gone abroad, but I thought I was doing something wrong. Clearly there's something wrong on your end either with ID or you partners abroad are just misreporting data use.

Hi there @Ioberski 

I have no clue if this is the reason or not, but on all of those screenshots you have Wi-Fi calling enabled. And with iD this is only for use in the UK.

 

So, and I can’t find definitive clarification anywhere*, maybe having this enabled whilst abroad is munching through your data rather than using your minutes

*some carriers say it uses data when you’re not connected to a Wi-Fi network whereas others say it doesn’t, both when either at home or when abroad. Some also say Wi-Fi calling abroad is supported and iD state it cannot be used.

So data usage whilst having Wi-Fi calling enabled and whilst away from a Wi-Fi network and (in your case) not in the UK is something only iD could tell us.

 

Also I’ve flagged your first screenshot as you’ve accidentally posted your mobile number on an open forum whereby anyone can see this.

Hi @Ioberski 

 

Your iD Mobile app appears to indicate that you’ve used your data allowance fully, we don’t have any issues on our side with recording extra data that never happened, if it didn’t happen, it wouldn’t be used.

 

If you’d like us to check your usage we can get in touch and take a look, however we won’t be able to see what exactly the data was used for, only how much and roughly when.

Thanks for all of that and removing my number, sorry didn't see that. I didn't make any calls, only sent a few WhatsApp messages in those first 24 hours. Yes it would be useful to see where and how 7gb data went in one day please.

No problem @Ioberski it’s easy to miss posting something up in error, more so (like me) when you’re frustrated. For the most part we should be okay as most people wouldn’t spot it, it’s just the ‘others’ lurking around that ‘want’ and ‘need’ this info.

iD will probably continue this via their Private Message facility (due to privacy etc) and hopefully they can give you a date and time as to when this usage was wracked up.

From there if you can spot what you were doing with your phone you’ll then have an answer.
