Network does not work at all in USA

James Mervyn
Community Member

I have just arrived in NYC and my network does not work at all. I cannot send texts or call or use data. I have roaming set to on and have a £20 spending cap. It says I have good 5G or 4G signal pretty much anywhere but nothing works. I have tried selecting a network manually and resetting network settings - neither of these work. Please advise ASAP.

Did you receive a roaming rates SMS when you arrived in NYC, @James Mervyn?

If not, something is not setup correctly on your iD Mobile account.

FYI, nothing happens ASAP in the iD Community. If you’re in a hurry speak to iD customer service online.

https://idmobile.co.uk/live-chat -  the iD advisers work until 8pm on weekdays (their chatbot works 24/7).

Hi there,

I’ve seen numerous threads about data roaming not working in the USA - very few if any seem to be resolved.

My roaming is turned on, I’ve received my carrier based welcome SMS, my call and SMS services are working, I have data roaming turned on (worked perfectly in Denmark last month), I have purchased a USA specific data add on, and still no joy. I’ve turned my device on and off again (x2). A friend travelling with me has the identical problem.

It seems that there’s an issue in the APN, where “ID” is incorrectly capitalised. I don’t actually understand the granular detail here but as ID don’t allow you to change this, it’s not something I can try to change / resolve myself.

I’ve tried live text to ask for help but after 22 minutes to go through their ID and verification check, I was told it would be a further 183 minutes to connect to an agent! As I’m only here for 3 more days I thought I’d try on here to see if anyone else has been in a similar situation and found a fix.

Thanks in advance

Hi @Stubrie

It’d be strange for it to work absolutely fine in Denmark but not in the USA, are you on an iPhone? If so, please try the following;

Connect the phone to WiFi and then open Safari and head to http://www.unlockit.co.nz/

Tap Create APN
Change the Country to UK
Find iD in the list
Scroll down and tap Create APN
Tap  Allow on the pop-up then Install in the top right corner.

Then restart and make sure Data Roaming is turned on and test.

Hi @Tom, thanks for your suggestion.

Yes I was on an iPhone. I downloaded the settings from the site, but it still didn't work. Everything I’ve read suggests the APN settings are incorrect for the US - and there are many many examples of customers being unable to use data in the USA in the community forums, and technical teams not able to resolve (or in my case, even be contacted).

I’m back in the UK now with a USA data add-on paid for and completely untouched! I’l try and raise with customer services and decide whether to stay with ID based on their response (my friend has already decided he’s moving elsewhere).

Thanks
