Get a local SIM card when arrive in SA,
Alternatively, if your handset is eSIM capable maybe try a data-only eSIM with a travel plan for SA.
For example, https://roamless.com, https://www.airalo.com/south-africa-esim, etcetera.

Only if the Wi-Fi network you’re using was not free-of-charge.
You would not be able to call / text like normal if using Wi-Fi though.
