using my phone internationally

I’ve recently had phone problems and had to rely on intermittent wifi while accidently going over my cap when I was travelling in Peru a few weeks ago.  I’m anxious to avoid this happening again when I travel to Vietnam and Cambodia next month. Please could you direct me to the best source of information? I’ve tried searching myself but haven’t found specific advice for these countries. Thank you. Sue Watling.

    If you set your bill cap to zero, you won’t be able to use your phone in Vietnam or Cambodia. However, if you raise your bill cap, you’ll pay £9.60 per MB for data in Vietnam, which equates to a staggering £9,830.40 per GB. You would quickly exceed your spend cap, resulting in a large bill and loss of service while abroad.

    Roaming in Peru is very expensive. For just 1GB of data, you’ll be billed £6,144. I recommend getting a local pay-as-you-go SIM card instead.

    Hi, @suewatling

    Thank you for reaching out, Sue. I completely understand your concerns about avoiding unexpected charges during your upcoming travels to Vietnam and Cambodia. Given your recent experience in Peru, it’s definitely wise to plan ahead for a smooth and cost-effective journey.

    To help prevent this from happening again, I recommend setting your spending cap to £0 while you’re abroad. This will stop any accidental charges from occurring. You can easily do this by visiting the following link:

    Thank you Zandile, I hadn’t come across setting the cap to zero although I’ve just read on https://www.idmobile.co.uk/help-and-advice/international-and-roaming-charges  If you're somewhere else [outside of Inclusive Roaming destinations] you won't be able to use your phone with a £0 bill cap, as your activity will be classed as international roaming, and any usage will be chargeable.

    I wanted to avoid being totally reliant on wifi as happened when I was disconnected in Peru, so am thinking I need to allow data roaming once I’ve arrived in Vietnam in order to connect locally and then turn the roaming off unless I need to use an internet connection. Does that sound appropriate?

    Regards

    Sue

    Hi, @suewatling

    You’re absolutely right when you’re outside the Inclusive Roaming destinations, like in Vietnam, your usage will be considered international roaming and charged accordingly. Setting your spending cap to zero will block all usage, including roaming, so it’s important to manage this carefully.

    Your plan to enable data roaming once you arrive in Vietnam and then turn it off when not needed is a very sensible approach. This way, you can connect to local networks when necessary without being completely reliant on Wi-Fi, and you can control your data usage to avoid unexpected charges.

    To help prevent accidental charges, you can set your spending cap on your account. Simply log in to the iD Mobile app, go to the “Manage your account” section, select “Spending cap,” and adjust it to £0. This will block any unexpected usage while you’re abroad.
