Monqi phone not receiving sms messages

I’ve set up my sons monqi phone and it seems ok apart from the fact he can’t receive sms messages. He gets messages from the two bonded parents but nothing else. I can see he’s got messages waiting through the parent app but there’s no notification for him on his phone. do you have to have contacts installed before receiving an sms from them? coverage is fine so it’s not a coverage issue.
