5G on OPPO Reno 4 Pro 5G

Please can you give me an update on 5G support on this device.

This phone does work on 5G, just not with ID Mobile.

Hi @paullove,

Welcome to the Community!

Have you checked the below link to see if you have 5G in your area?

You’ll also need to enable 5G in your network settings.

Hi Kash,
Yes I am in a 5G area, my phone is on the ID Mobile list of supported devices and it supports 5G on other networks (AIS in Thailand)

However, I cannot enable 5G in my network settings for the ID Mobile SIM - see below.

What can I do?

Most iD SIMs are 5G ready. Maybe your SIM needs replacing. But you’d need to be in a 5G enabled area anyway and as some are finding it isn’t that much of the UK currently

This attempt to connect was prompted by the email from ID Mobile - “5G is now available in your area!”.
Your coverage map also shows 5G is availble here.

I asked for and just received a replacement SIM, but as I said above, 5G is not an option I can select.

Oh heck. You’re another one that’s had ‘that email’.🙄

That email is an auto generated one from iD and these get sent when Three tell them 5G is available in your area.

The issue is how they define ‘your area’. Some receiving this email then go on a merry-go-round spending vast amounts of time trying to get their phone working, when in fact ‘your area’ could be still without 5G.

Really I would say the email should be titled 5G may be in your area and if not it could be a few miles away.

But having said all of that, does this link actually estimate 5G at your postcode?

https://www.three.co.uk/content/experience-fragments/threedigital/uk/en/site/mvno/coverage-checker/idmobile.html

(it defaults to 4G, toggle between 3G and 5G)

Though even it does show you have 5G right over your head, others still can’t make any use if it.

Hi,
Results for ng4 2dj

Yes – 5G is available
Good news. In most cases, you can use our 5G network for mobile internet, calls, and texts.

My problem is that I cannot enable 5G in my SIM setting - it is simply not an available option - see screen shot below.

From other posts, it look like this is a network level problem.

Yes I’ve just checked and you’re quite right it does state 5G is available outdoors. One might question the wording -  “In most cases, you can use our 5G network for mobile internet, calls, and texts

And this “Although we try to make these coverage results as accurate as possible, the information is only a guide. It doesn't guarantee availability in a particular location. The roll out plans are updated regularly and may change over time”.

So the only other things that I can think of, being as you should now have a newer 5G ready iD SIM,  is:

  • maybe the phone isn’t a UK spec model if you didn’t buy it from iD Mobile.
  • possibly trying to see if moving to a better 5G signal area prompts the phone into offering 5G - though this is rather doubtful, though the image posted does show only 2 bars of signal strength. Could the 5G be far weaker and is not being seen by the phone..?
  • maybe a previous provider software is inhibiting the functionality. Though this normally happens on Samsung phones and relates to the 3G switch off.

The only other thing to suggest would be to see if a family member or neighbour has an unlocked to all UK networks 5G ready phone and pop your SIM into that. Then see if their phone shows 5G on your SIM.

My phone works with 5G - I used it on holiday.with a Thai SIM

It just seems that something with ID Mobile is preventing the setting being available.

Did you bring this phone from a previous UK network?

And if you did did their SIM allow 5G connections?

And if it was never used on UK 5G, I guess you could rule this out by trying another UK SIM from another network, maybe ask a friend or neighbour if you could quickly try their 5G SIM.

You already know it works on a Thai SIM, but maybe its this phone in the UK. Having said that I know some UK unlocked phones can’t use 3G (I know your issue is 5G) due to the previous providers software version inhibiting certain functions that would normally be available.

The only other thing it might be is, AFAIK, iD say the phone has to be a UK model.

edit. It could be a typo on the compatibility list, but the Oppo Reno 4 5G isn’t listed, just the Oppo Reno 4 - iD tend to put 5G next to the model on their list. This actually might be the reason.

Does anyone know what the issue is here and can give a useful answer?

I saw a similar thread that was closed without a satisfactory response and this is going the same way.

It looks like my only option is to switch to another carrier.

Sorry, I was trying to help you find an answer. I can only say iD could do with checking what I wrote in my edit to see if they know if the 5G version works on their network.

Anyway, I’ll leave that here, good luck

Hey there @paullove, thank you for the updates.

I’ve checked your postcode, and can see 5G is available in your area, but will likely be a weaker signal:

https://www.three.co.uk/support/network-and-coverage/coverage

Although 5G is available, and likely to be best outdoors, this is only an estimate, and as mentioned on the website, you can use 5G in most cases, but it will not always be the strongest.

If/until the area gets stronger 5G, and may be available indoors, will you then see a larger improvement to your 5G signal here. But currently, we’d expect a weaker 5G signal I’m afraid, and recommend using 4G for the best signal here.

Thanks,

Tyler

Hi @Tyler ,

Thank you for your reply.
Burt you have again not answer my main question, which is why dont my settings allow me to enable my phone to use 5G (even if the signal is weak in my area)?

In the SIM settings, my network type only shows two options:
4G/3G/2G (Auto)
3G/2G (Auto)

This does not show 5G as an option, even though my phone is on your approved list of devices.
What can I do to set this up?

Hi @paullove

We’re not sure why your device wouldn’t have the option while the iD Mobile SIM is inside it, where did you purchase the device?

Are software updates all up to date?

Have you tried a network settings reset?

Tom

Hi @Tom

Thank you for the follow up.
The software is up to date.
I cannot find n option to reset the network settings, but I have removed the SIM and reinserted it.

The phone works perfectly and allows me to enable 5G with a different SIM (in Thailand)

Hey there @paullove, the below should show how to reset network settings on your phone:

https://www.hardreset.info/devices/oppo/oppo-reno4-z-5g/reset-network-settings/

Did you purchase the phone from us?

Has 5G ever worked before with our SIM card?

Thanks,

Tyler

hi @Tyler

Thank you for the guide - I have just reset the network settings, but it did not help ;-(

I bought the phone from Carphone Warehouse in Nov 2021.
5G has never worked with an ID Mobile SIM, but I it did work with a Travel SIM in Thailand.

Hi @paullove

Are you sure your model is the Oppo Reno 4 or the Oppo Reno 4 5G?
