Changed to ID from Three - can't make or receive phone calls

Can someone please explain, in basic idiot-proof terms what I need to do about this as I am at my wits end.

  • Switched to ID mobile, transfer went through on 20th November
  • Data is working fine. Texts work fine.
  • Confirmed that the phone is not “locked” to the previous network
  • Sim card is recognised
  • Have rebooted phone multiple times
  • Spent an hour on the ID chat help but I don;t think they fully understood the rpoblem and suggested I take the device to the nearest Carphone Warehouse. There’s nothing wrong with the device. It’s recognising the SIM. I have data. I just can’t use my phone as - you know - a phone.

Having browsed the community this seems to be a common problem, but, maybe I’m unusually stupid, but I don’t understand any of the instructions for resolving it.

Has anyone found a way of resolving this problem that doesn’t require an advanced degree in computer science? I need to be able to use my phone to make actual calls ASAP.

Unfortunately @WoodrowHB  your handset isn’t on the iD Mobile Approved Handsets list for use with VoLTE
https://www.idmobile.co.uk/help-and-advice/approved-handsets

Even though your phone isn’t on the approved list it may still work if you can get it to connect.

I also found this info on a website, with regards to the lack of call connection, that may be helpful as it has appeared to work for a lot of people who replied to the post…..

My phone Redmi note 8 pro

Dial * # * # 86583 # * # * Once you are done, there will be a message ”VoLTE Carrier check was disabled” appear on the screen, thus activating Volte on your Xiaomi phone

go to Settings> SIM cards and mobile networks (I have two sims), select the one and confirm "Use VoLTE" enabled. Reboot.

Dial * # * # 4636 # * # * to get to the TESTING menu. Select your sim by "Phone info 1" or "Phone info 2", first and second sim slot, respectively

Go go "Set Preferred Network Type:" and select from the dropdown anything that starts with "LTE". I tested "LTE only" and "LTE/CDMA/EvDo/.../..../..." both worked.

Wait for the phone to register on the network properly, 30-40 sec, or just reboot.

I hope it helps x

HI @WoodrowHB

What phone do you have?
You need to have VoLTE (Voice over LTE) or 4G Calling access available and turned on to be able to connect to the 4G network.
When you state that you ‘Confirmed that the phone is not “locked” to the previous network’ this only means that any network SIM can be used in the phone BUT your phones software may still be controlled by a provider and hence it may not have received the relevant update to allow connection to VoLTE.
Once you let us know what phone you have then someone may be able to point you in the right direction to get it sorted for you.
It may be worth doing a quick internet search i.e. How to enable VoLTE on a (insert phone make/model) / Can’t enable VoLTe on a (insert phone make/model) to see if you can find an answer to the problem.
Good luck x

It's a Redmi Note 9

If I go to settings the option to "Use VoLTE" is turned on.

Google says that if I can use 4g data VoLTE is likely to be enabled. I absolutely can use 4g data. I just can't make calls.

Hi @WoodrowHB

I’d recommend the same as above, the Redmi Note 9 isn’t an officially supported device by iD Mobile, therefore it may not fully work or work at all on our network.

Thanks for the help here @Decembersangel72.

Sorry if I’m being thick here but RE:

How did you do this if calls were not working on your phone?

If I may.

Open up the dial/call option (so the number keypad is showing for dialing a number) and just dial those characters and numbers in. The last * should automatically open the option - it doesn’t actually call anything, its just a means of opening hidden options within the phone.

Hi @WoodrowHB

You’ll still be able to use the dialer.

@Decembersangel72 🤣

It’s easy done. I genuinely forgot you can’t move between PAYG and SIM with iD the other day. Made a right bafoon of myself. In my defense my previous provider could so I’ll just blame that!😏

Plus ain’t this blooming 3G switch off a royal pain. I’ve been rather busy outside of these very forums - my own fault, the word got out and well you can guess the rest.

Anyway, happy to help where I can and you’re certainly welcome to fill any gaps on mine. As they say team work makes the dream work! Or is it two idiots!!

And YOU!!😊
