After months of having no problems making calls from home, my phone will n o longer do this, but was fine when I went into the local Currys store today (about 2.5 miles from home).

Hey there @Endeavour Graham, unfortunately, the Nokia 8 isn't supported on ours/Three UK’s network for 4G VOLTE/LTE, which means the 3G turn-off would affect your calls altogether if you live in a no 3G zone I’m afraid. Please find supported phones below which will work fine for calling on our networks:

Thanks,

Tyler

Hi @Endeavour Graham

Please could you let us know the full postcode(s) where you’re having issues?

The Nokia 8 is supported by iD Mobile, however not for 4G or Wi-Fi calling, with the recent 3G switch offs, usage with your device may be affected.

Post code is SG1 5TT.  I understood that the Nokia 8 was 4G compatible.  Why will it work when I am in Currys, but not at home?

@Endeavour Graham

In your case 3G has been turned off for your postcode.

And maybe the Curry’s you went to was still in the 3G area?

@Mohamed1

For your area 3G appears to be only good outside

Have you read the links posted further up?

If not it’s this one:

Hi @Endeavour Graham & @Mohamed1

Thanks for the help here @Daz_S, it looks like both of you are in areas where 3G is indeed switched off/being switched off, which means devices that are not supported for 4G calling on iD Mobile (Such as the Nokia 8 and Redmi 9AT) may encounter issues with calls going forward.

Tom

Hi Daz.  I thought that the Nokia 8 was 4G-compatible and that turning off 3G would, therefore, make no difference.

Hi @Endeavour Graham

I’m not overly familiar with Nokia’s of today. But in addition to having 4G, any phone NOW* requires the functionality of LTE.

*NOW being since Three (and iD piggyback on Three) started turning off 3G.

So you need to have LTE available on your phone, which in turn IF your phone has this capability then look for a setting like VoLTE and switch/slide it ON. However it could also be the case that your phone was ‘locked’ to your previous provider. As I’m finding even those phones that were locked and have become unlocked (via the PUK method) even these phones cannot have the LTE (or VoLTE) physically turned on as in some cases that option is greyed out. This is due to your previous providers (not phone manufacturer) software inhibiting this function.

So what to do?

Either look around the www for any how to’s regarding removal of that previous providers software (this would entail ‘flashing’ the phone - something most wouldn’t want to try), or see if there’s any good info regarding where that setting may be, or upgrade your phone (an unlocked one) to overcome the loss of calling etc.

edit. Even moving to another provider doesn’t guarantee your phone will work when they also start their own big 3G kill off.

(so I did reply, then edit and now it’s gone. I’ll see if it shows later)
