still cant use imessages

I transferred my old number to a new phone, and was given a new number before the transfer had happened. Now my iMessages will not allow me to use the old number and only links to the place holder number. Also, likely related, when sending sms texts it says they cannot be delivered, however I am getting replies as though they have been delivered. Any help massively appreciated.
