You’d expect the signal to be the same with both, as mobile phone would be using the same cell with both service providers.

Have you tested both SIM’s at the exact same location? Being indoors and outdoors can affect the coverage.
In regards to your number, if you move your iD Mobile number to a different network it will trigger a termination fee if you are still within contract.
If you are still within the returns period you can look at returning the contract and then moving the number.
