Planning a road trip isn’t always easy, even if you’re just staying in the UK. That's why it's worth spending a little time getting organised before you set off.
So, whether you’re heading to the Scottish Highlands, exploring the Jurassic Coast or taking the lanes through the Lake District, here’s everything to get you ready before you hit the road.

Share the drive.
Long drives can be tiring, and driving while tired is really dangerous. In fact, driver fatigue is one of the biggest causes of serious road accidents in the UK. So, if you're travelling with other drivers, it’s a good idea to take turns driving. Swapping every couple of hours can make a huge difference to how alert you feel.
If you’re heading out solo, make sure you pace yourself. Try splitting the journey into manageable sections. That way you can stretch your legs, grab a drink and reset your energy levels before getting back behind the wheel.

Take regular breaks.
The Highway Code recommends taking a break of at least 15 minutes every two hours of driving. Taking regular stops can help you stay focused and responsive behind the wheel. It's also a good opportunity to check fuel levels, use the loo and make sure everyone’s comfortable before setting off again.

Pack the road trip essentials.
Before you queue up your playlist, make sure you’ve got your road trip kit packed. It should include:
- A phone charger and car adapter
- Snacks and water (don’t rely on service stations for everything)
- A first aid kit
- Sunglasses (low sun on motorways can be seriously dangerous)
- Cash for car parks or tolls
- A blanket (in case you break down and need to wait it out)
It might seem like a lot, but these can all save you a big headache later. Once it’s packed into a bag and stashed in the boot, you’ll be ready for whatever the journey throws at you.

Download your maps before you set off.
If your trip takes you through any rural areas, mobile signal isn’t always promised. That’s where offline maps can be a total lifesaver. Apps like Google Maps and Apple Maps both let you download entire routes before you leave home. That way your navigation works perfectly even without signal.

Don’t forget breakdown cover.
This is the one people skip, and then really wish they hadn’t. Breaking down is seriously stressful at the best of times. But breaking down without any cover is a whole different nightmare.
Thankfully, as an iD Mobile customer, you can claim a brilliant AA breakdown deal through iD Perks. Check it out in the iD Perks section of the iD Mobile app and get yourself covered before you hit the road.

You’re ready to roll!
Ready to get going? The more prepared you are before your journey, the more time you can spend enjoying the adventure. So on your next trip, make sure to share the driving, take regular breaks, pack your essentials, download those maps and sort your breakdown cover.
