The best hidden gem I've found is the Melissani Cave on the Greek island of Kefalonia. Inside the cave is an underground lake and you go into it by boat. Further inside, part of the cave roof has collapsed and the sunlight strikes the blue water to create a glowing effect. It is really beautiful and also very peaceful.

I'd have to say the little food spots hidden away in Venice's old town. We stumbled across a tiny place where a guy was serving freshly fried seafood in paper cones. There was a long queue of locals, so we knew it had to be good—and it was absolutely delicious.

Another favourite was a small wine bar serving cicchetti (Venetian-style tapas). You'd choose a few from the counter, grab a glass of local wine, and just stand outside soaking up the atmosphere. It was such a simple experience, but it felt so authentic and ended up being one of the highlights of the trip.

Cold weather means less people and no queues. Wear a jacket, or treat yourself when you get there.

Definitely best hidden gem we found was in a restaurant in Faro, Portugal. First of all, had the best cataplana ever. But if you go when it is quiet in the afternoon, and ask to see the tunnels, the restaurant staff will explain the history while looking through a glass covered well in the floor. Under the restaurant is a section of tunnels used by the Moors during the siege of Faro to get outside the city walls and escape to fish and gather food, allowing them to outlast the siege. Then they will take you down the circular staircase into the tunnels themselves and let you walk some of the winding path until it reaches its blockages. Never would have suspected it under such a beautiful restaurant. Restaurant Vila Adentro 10/10

There's a lovely little village called Martel in Lot, France. A great market square with restaurants and a few shops, swimming nearby in the river and a picturesque part of the country!

Way back in 2003, my girlfriend and I were following information and directions found online on an obscure website for a remote campsite just south of Taragonna in Spain, a small place called L’Ampolla.  It was early evening and we had been travelling all day down the coast after visiting the Dali Museum in Figures.  We were in our beat up Fiesta with no air con with temperatures reaching 40.c in early August.  We badly needed to stop, cool down, find a toilet, put up our tent and camping gear, eat and then sleep.

We eventually found this small town, almost by accident, not even signposted from the main road, but unfortunately, driving through, we saw it was nothing more than a construction site of maybe 20 hotels and bars being built, no-one around, nothing open, roads not even finished…!!  We were going to give up before the day was done and head for somewhere larger, even a service station as we were tired and hungry, but we wanted at least to find out if there was really a campsite.  As we neared the coast and at the end of a dirt track we finally saw a small sign for camping.  5 minutes driving further on, then we found it on the side of a small hill.  No airs and graces, just a patch of scrubland with about 30 tents pitched, but it had toilets, showers and a ‘clubhouse’.  We parked up, used the loo, quickly put up the tent and visited the clubhouse which was still open at about 9pm in the evening.

We found we were amongst about 50 or so people from all over Europe, the clubhouse had camping supplies, cold food and even colder beer, table football, music and a bar..!!  We then also found it was just a 30 metre walk to the beach and sea, which was all ‘au natrual’ not even developed, the campsite edge just morphed into the water, it was great.  By 10pm, revitalised, we were fed (of sorts) and cooling off, drinking ice cold beer floating in the still hot Mediterranean sea surrounded by lovely people having a good time, music floating out over the water.  What a find..!!  You’d get up and just wander into the sea as a wake up..!!  It was only supposed to be an emergency stop for the night but we were so taken with the place we stayed there for two days in the end.  It was the highlight of the holiday, camping was only a few Euros each night and we probably spent more on beer and challenging italiians, French and Germans to table football tournaments…!!  I’m sure it`s all very different nowadays 20+ years further on, commercialised and structured, but I`ll never forget that hidden gem of a campsite found almost by chance all those years ago.

Whilst on holiday a few years back we thought we would take a drive out of the hustle and bustle of Benidorm and drove to albir/alfas/altea we parked up and took a lovely walk and came across a lovely beach that has been given blue flag awards , it has panoramic views of alicante with absolute gorgeous views of sunset and sunrise, it has water sports, and for the diving enthusiasts gorgeous natural coves along the bay with Crystal clear waters. There is so much to do for the whole family yet very relaxing and a romantic spot for cpuples to sit and watch the sunrise/sunset .it also  has sports courts toilets wifi lifeguards pedalos etc and the caves can be accessed via boats or on foot along the pebble/rocks . This was the highlight of our holiday by going out from the busy hustle and bustle of benidorm into such a beautiful town . My advice is to definitely take yourself out of the main areas and explore the country is beautiful.
