Cala Macarella is a turquoise cove with it's own fabulous beach café. It's a nice walk along the coast from Cala Galdana.

Not specifically a hidden gem to keep cool temperature wise on holiday, but definitely a hidden gem for keep cool in a reducing stress sort of way… We use talc on feet and legs to get wet sand off. It’s a great tip and makes getting changed after a day at the beach so much easier especially with children. The sand just brushes off!

Start taking antihistamines a week before going on holiday if you're prone to mosquito bites! This REALLY helps!

My favourite hidden gem on holiday…. Is actually a whole city! Lugano, Switzerland was a place we stumbled upon our trip driving from Milan to Munich on a road trip, and absolutely fell in love with it. The entire region is so beautiful, and Lake Lugano is like the Swiss sister of Lake Como, and has an air of class, luxury, and serenity to it, plus so much to see in the area.

We were in Sydney, Australia and just getting on random buses to find hidden beaches and resorts etc. One day we went to the bus station and jumped on a bus and when we got to the destination I realised it was the site they used to film Home and Away.  They weren’t filming but we took photos outside “Salt”, swam in the natural swimming pool (which is often shown in the soap) and had a drink in the cafe used for the Diner!  It was as if we had been let loose on a film set, very surreal and great fun.  I now watch the Soap just so that I can say “I was there!”

The best thing I’ve ever discovered on Holiday was signing up to stay overnight on a small uninhabited island in the Maldives. This was preceeded by a beach bbq dinner the night before and watching the sunset. The morning after was breakfast on the beach then a stroll around the entire island coast and seeing huge turtles laying eggs

A hidden beach in Thailand we stumbled across after walking past the busy tourist spots. No crowds, just clear water, soft sand, and the sound of longtail boats in the distance. It felt like we’d accidentally found a place that wasn’t meant to be shared.

Bloomfield Lodge in Far North Queensland, Australia.  A beautiful remote spot accessible only by light aircraft and boat.  No mobile phone or internet connections.  A perfect way to get away from it all.

Be present. Switching off on holiday is about more than the destination. There is so much to see and enjoy all around us and sometimes the best hidden gems are the one off moments you never expected.

Looking a for a bar in Shibuya and spent ages looking down this street only to find one behind a fake door that looked like it was a vending machine. Spent the day sipping cocktails and watching the madness of Shibuya unfold below me.

One of my favourite hidden gems was a cruise to Norway with breathtaking scenes and a stop off in Hammerfest where we saw the famous Beluga whale ( sadly he’s passed away now) and Santa in the same day in the middle of May!

One of the best hidden gems I’ve discovered on holiday was the Colosseum at El Jem in Tunisia. I was amazed by how impressive and well-preserved it was, especially as it’s not somewhere you hear talked about as much as other famous historical sites. Walking around such an incredible piece of Roman history was definitely one of the highlights of my trip.

Increasing safety of a stolen phone seems really important to me. There are many settings in your phone to help you track a lost phone (even when turned off) and make the phone obsolete if you can’t get it back. Even a setting that prevents you from turning airplane mode on without Face ID to stop the signal blockers.

We found a hidden beach in Vietnam where the only sounds were the waves and the birds. Absolute bliss! It reminded me that the best places are often the ones you stumble across by accident and not planned. There is nothing like an adventure that is so good for the soul! Makes you feel alive again in what can often feel like a very stressful world 🌎

Every bodies idea of a hidden gem is different….

explore and find places away from the busy touristy areas.
Speak to people …. I have met lifelong friends this way!

Do what your mind and body needs - it is your holiday if you want to relax by a pool, do it. If you want to explore and pack everything in - do it. It is all about what you need and what makes you happy.

Try something new, whether this be a new food or a new activity.

Spend time with your loved ones……. Maybe not a hidden gem but a gem to make memories that can’t be replaced.

The best hidden gem is Taiwan, although it can be a bit of a trek to get there (long flight to Shanghai, stopover of 5 hours and a further 2 ½ hours to Taipei) the journey is worth it. A country full or surprises, all public signage and Metro announcements are in English and Mandarin. The transportation system is fully integrated and  cheap (the same card takes you on metro, trains, busses, ferries and trams. The taxis are also very reasonably priced.  There is so much to do, from child friendly museums, science parks and zoos to open air exhibitions, museums, Taipei 101 (101 stories high with amazing views over Taipei). There are costal towns with beautiful beaches, lovely bars and great shops, take a high-speed (182mph) train to the South and there are mountainside country parks, lovely small town beaches.  In every place are bicycles for hire using your phone to pay.  The food ranges from traditional Chinese to KFC and McDonalds and in Taipei there is even an Irish bar. The hotels are reasonable and good quality.  The mixture of the old and new is amazing, especially the temples and the Hindu palaces.  With weather that is generally warm (unless there is a typhoon!). For memories you won’t forget for a long time Taiwan is the place.

There was a time I travelled to Cartagena, Colombia after receiving a map, and met an exotic bird smuggler called Jack T. Colton. We followed the map and discovered El Corazón ("The Heart").

Definitely the best hidden gem to find on a holiday.

What’s the best hidden gem you’ve ever discovered on holiday?

When holidaying in Prague during a summer heatwave, we discovered Hostivař Dam Beach after a recommendation from a Czech family friend. It was a lovely, busy place to visit that was filled with locals and provided a very welcome relief - being in/near the water during the heat!
