A £1 bet on a 100 to 1 horse won me £100.

With that booked a yugo tours holiday to split airport not knowing my final destination.

After a boat ride i arrived on a Croatia island of Hvar and had one of the best holidays of my life.

Nowadays that island is holidays to the rich and famous but I still think of it as my hidden gem!

Best hidden gem on holiday was Câmara de Lobos in Madeira, a wonderful fishing village that had such a colourful sight!

We as a family do DisneyLand Paris  alot and find that not rushing around like a loonatic trying to fill the day with ride Ques it ruins the magic. The Disney app is a godsend and just head for the lowest ride times and take regular breaks to recharge itakes it alot more fun.

While travelling in Brisbane over 20 years ago, found a beach in the city called Kodak beach at the time but now called Streets beach. Lovely little hidden oasis in a busy city. Also an alternative to the Gold Coast which is very over developed is the Sunshine Coast

The best hidden gem that i have found on holiday is in Barcelona. Just down the road from out hotel was this quaint breakfast place. The staff were so friendly and we went there every morning for the week we were there!! On one of the days we accidentally left our camera there and once we remembered we ran back and the staff had taken photos on the camera. We were so greatful they found it and looked after it. The last photo we had was a superman pose from our main waiter. Would definitely go back!!

Having been lucky to travel to Menorca on a few occasions I managed to stumble across The Ancient Cami de Cavalls which is an ancient 115 mile coastal path that circles the whole island, allowing you to hike through hidden pine forests, secret ravines, and secluded viewpoints that mass tourism hasn't touched.

A great deal of it can be done on a mountain bike/ adapted bike for disability too if you prefer that method

Best Hidden Gem: If you visit Colorado and want to avoid touristy mountain towns, Twin Lakes is stunningly beautiful and just a small isolated village. There is a horse-shoe shape of 14ers, including the highest peak in Colorado, and two glacial lakes.

Taking a long multi plug extension cable so you can stop the arguing about who's using the 1 power socket in the little apartment or room you are in...

When on holiday, go and try everything possible. I found this hidden gem of a cafe in Sweden just wandering around. Best pasta I've ever eaten and it was surprisingly affordable.

We found a proper Spanish restaurant in Benidorm.Full of Spanish people so we just knew it had to be good. Just shows that even the most commercial resorts have some hidden jems worth looking for. Unfortunately I'm not going to give the details, you'll have to make the effort get to know some locals or just be really lucky and stumble upon it like we did!

The absolute best hidden gem I ever found on holiday was a little restaurant tucked beneath a barbershop in Kingston Jamaica. I doubt I could find it now, or that it’s even there anymore. It was like walking into someone’s kitchen — family sitting around, catching up on the day as they served you with no mind for the time. I ordered a banana split for dessert and, on realising they had no more bananas, the waiter got on the back of his moped and drove off to buy a banana!! I’d have been happy with ice cream but this was a place with the sole mission of feeding its visitors what they smiled over.

I spent a few days in Harrogate many years ago and the hotel staff recommended an incredible Thai restaurant nearby that I hadn't spotted in my planning. I went that night and the food was mind-blowing. I didn't think I could manage dessert until I saw chocolate spring rolls on the menu. They were soooo good. I still think about them sometimes. I've definitely found other hidden gems on holiday since but honestly, this is still a fave!

Best hidden gem for me is the UK. If the weather's good there is no need to go abroad. Isle of White, Devon, Cornwall, Yorkshire coast, Welsh coast, all just beautiful with amazing beaches and awesome waves !

A family run restaurant in Lloret de mar that hasn’t changed its menu in over 60 years. Opening the restaurant in 1964 and only serving, a spit roast chicken, chips and salad! A beautiful, authentic l, perfect little gem! The only option is half or full chicken.

My hidden gem was a fish restaurant recommended to us in Rhodes. We managed to get a table overlooking the sea and had the best fresh fish.

The best hidden gem I've ever discovered on holiday wasn't a beach, a bar or a breathtaking viewpoint – it was a tiny family-run café that didn't even have a sign.

We only found it because I confidently announced, "I know a shortcut," before leading everyone completely the wrong way. After several wrong turns, some good-natured complaints and one very suspicious-looking goat, we stumbled across a little courtyard where an elderly couple were serving homemade food to locals.

There was no menu, no Wi-Fi and nobody spoke much English, but somehow we ended up with the best meal of the entire holiday.

We laughed our way through ordering using hand gestures, left absolutely stuffed, and promised ourselves we'd never tell too many people about it.
Ironically, getting lost turned out to be the best navigation I'd ever done.

It taught me that the best hidden gems aren't the ones in the guidebooks – they're the places you find when your plans go completely wrong.
