pixel 7 locked to ID. Unlock with esim capabilities after contract ends?

My Pixel 7 is locked to ID which has been a problem trying to find a data solution abroad. 

 

My contract is up in 2 months. 

 

Can I unlock and remove the locked down esim functionality when the contract expires? 

 

Or can I do this in advance?

    Thank you for getting in touch. 

     

    We do not lock our phones so you should be able to use another SIM in the handset. 

    Was the phone purchased directly with us? 

     

    Have you tried another SIM?

    Yes. Via a comparison site. 

     

    Esim functionality is definitely locked down by ID.

    Looking into settings it looks like I may be able to add an esim now which was not the case previously. Did this change with the last 18 months?

    The Pixel 7 has always been eSIM compatible so I am unsure as to why this has not been the case previously.
