Porting issue old SIM still active

Hiya

Have ported many times over the years from various providers with no issues…..

Moved 2 days ago from GiffGaff to ID Mobile with new phone.

Old phone (with GG sim) still says ‘Giffgaff’ as network and SIM says my number although functionality lost - cant phone out, text, etc so something has worked.

New phone (with ID Mobile SIM) absolutely fine and works and everything OK.

Why is my old SIM showing GiffGaff still?

I have phoned GG and they say I am not on their system anymore etc etc and as far as they are concerned, it has all gone through.

ID Mobile say nothing wrong their end because it clearly all works (which it does).

Why am I concerned? Should I just cut the GG sim up and assume its all gone through fine? I am concerned as to why my GG sim still shows it as a network signal?!?????

Hopefully someone can help!

(Ironically, this is also the same for my mum who has moved across as well the past 2 days from GG to ID)

Thanks

DEJB

Okay @dejb1982, if the number you wanted to keep is now linked to your iD SIM and iD account, sounds like the giffgaff SIM is no longer needed - assuming calls, SMS text messages and mobile data all work as expected, when using the phone using your iD SIM card.

Just make sure you’ve turned of auto-renew, and delete your payment card details, from your giffgaff account online.

IMO, Christmas is a dodgy time to switch your number given all the bank holidays - many service providers have a special schedule for number switching at Christmas / New Year.

Hi @andewhite

Thank you for your response. Very helpful.

TBH, that is exactly what I am thinking to do - I am sure you are thinking ‘why is he even bothered if it all works ok on ID mobile?’.

I think its because, with all my other switches over the years, my old SIM would always say ‘no service’ etc to show it was disconnected. My GG sim currently shows the GG sign and I am worried it hasnt switched off completely, even though functionality is lost - it is like being in the twilight zone.

I suppose if it was the ID sim in the same phone, I would be none the wiser would I?

Just concerned that it hasnt switched off completely!

Thanks

DEJB

When you login to your ‘old’ giffgaff account online (using a web browser), is there a mobile number shown on your giffgaff dashboard, @dejb1982?

The following giffgaff article might help - How do I cancel my giffgaff account?

Hi @andewhite

I knew you would ask that lol. No, there is no number linked to me on my GG account - I know, even stranger!

I just cant explain why I have  GG signal on my old GG sim.

(Probably trying to solve a problem when there isnt one!)

Thanks

DEJB

Hi @dejb1982,

Welcome to the Community!

It definitely sounds like everything has gone through fine.

You can dispose of the old SIM if you no longer require it.

Hi @Kash

Thanks for your email. I think so too that it's all done, I'm just concerned as to why the giffgaff sim is still showing a giffgaff signal. Makes no sense to me?

  • Can you call 43430 from the phone with your giffgaff SIM?
  • Do you get a reply if you text NUMBER to 43430 from the phone with your giffgaff SIM?

Giffgaff do seem to have suffered from a multitude of service issues in Dec’24 - maybe you just need to restart the phone with your giffgaff SIM, @dejb1982.

Thanks @andewhite . Will try that and report back!

@andewhite have text that number and NUMBER and it won't send (little red 'not sent' underneath it) and I've just called it and it won't connect and drops.

I cannot think of another way of trying to sort it, so think I will give up now and just treat it as unexplained! Everything I've done, and everything you and the forum have suggested, is all consistent with a successful port across, so goodness knows!

Thanks Ande for your help anyhow

Given you cannot call 43430 nor send an SMS text message to 43430, from the phone with your giffgaff SIM, it appears your giffgaff SIM has been disconnected from the giffgaff network, @dejb1982

Agreed @andewhite - I cannot understand why the phone with the gifggaff sim in still shows bars of signal and the GG wording on the left- all indicating that somehow it is still connected?!

Very strange

Hi @dejb1982

I would have thought that once the giffgaff SIM disconnects it wouldn’t show any network on it, that’s how I believe it’d be with us anyway.

It might be worth contacting giffgaff directly just to confirm that your account has indeed ended, the number transfer to iD Mobile should disconnect your account with them.

Hi @Tom

Thanks for your message. That would be my understanding as well. In every other port I've ever done my old sim then says no network available etc or similar- but this one from GG to ID is still getting a GG signal - even though all functionality out from the sim does not work anymore.

This is also the same for my.mum who ported to id mobile from GG at the same time - has there been a batch issue with porting from GG over the last couple of days? Seems too much of a coincidence to me!

You appear to be another one.

And if my gut is right then you must be using an iPhone?

This other new iD customer has a slightly different issue

  • their old EE SIM and an old iPhone, EE disconnected
  • their new iD SIM in their new iPhone and this new phone is showing their old dead EE SIM (even though it was never in this new phone) showing in one slot and their new iD SIM in the other slot.
  • their new iPhone shows no signal (not no service) for EE and a signal for iD

If you’re also an iPhone user then are these new iPhones too clever….

edit. IIRC their old EE SIM and old iPhone show as if the EE account is active but without a signal

Hi @Daz_S

Thanks for your message. Not iphone user no but Android Samsung.

I can't seem to figure out where the issue is - and to be honest, if it was just a new id sim in the same phone I would be none the wiser.

I just know from previous ports that the old sim should be dead, completely. And mine isn't, still connected somehow to GG network - but with no number and no functionality.

GG say it's ID's issue and vica versa.

Thanks @Daz_S but I'm on samsung.

Can't work out why I still have connection to a GG network and network bars on phone - even though sim has lost functionality!

Worried it hasn't gone across ok as every other port I've ever done in my life shows the old sim as 'no signal' etc.

I would be none the wiser if it was just a new ID sim in a current phone.

Doh, my bad! @dejb1982. Android here too.

I’ve heard that some previous providers left overs can show for up to 24 hours after the port completes successfully with your new provider (Vodafone was one that I know of). But in those cases it wasn’t related to things like Christmas etc being the reason, it just happened at any time.

But I wonder if yours is related to Christmas and if this is the case yours showing after 48+hours is odd but then again is it.

The only other thing this might be is that some old providers leave the light on for up to a month after leaving - iD do this if you cancel, your iD SIM reverts to a non functioning SIM for 30 days and during this time it gives you time to request a PAC and move your number.

As your number is showing and working with your new phone then I’d have to say everything moved fine.

And like you’ve said for the most part if we were keeping the phone then we’d be popping the old SIM out anyway so would never normally see this.

I can confirm a ‘blank’ iD SIM does indeed show a signal strength but does not show iD as a network until it is registered to the account.

Thanks @Daz_S . If I wasn't so pernickety then I don't suppose this would even be an issue!

As it was earlier, after doing some research, I also discovered that my 'mobile network state' in 'SIM status' showed as 'disconnected' even though I've always had a signal since moving to ID.

Now it shows 'connected' so goodness knows. Sometimes the layman (myself) can learn too much - ignorance is bliss.

We are all different yet the same (I too am like yourself, actually worse)

I can’t explain why it went from disconnected to connected unless the signal for O2/GG is dropping off at the masts. I came from another MVNO using O2’s gear as my signal was really bad towards my time with them.

But without knowledge where would we be - well not on here for starters!
