Samsung A40 call issue

Hi.

Just changed phone to a Samsung A40.

My original ID mobile sim wouldnt work for calls (in or out) so after going through setting with chat operator I was sent a new sim.

Still have same problem with new sim

I tried the following:

Lebara sim in the A40 and it works fine.

New ID mobile sim in a S21 Ultra and it works fine.

Another ID Mobil sim that currently works in an S24 Ultra, this works fine in the A40.

So why is the new ID mobile sim not working in the A40?

Please help before I pull any more hair out.

Hi @vpyorkie,

Welcome to the Community!

Is 4G enabled and VoLTE enabled on your handset?

As we don’t offer 3G calls you’ll need to make calls over 4G.

Please try this and let us know how you get on.

Kash

Was this phone purchased direct from iD Mobile?

You must have done as the replacement SIM works in another phone, but did you register the replacement SIM via your account before using it?

Does your correct number for the replacement SIM show as correct on all other phones?

Lebara sim in the A40 and it works fine.

Well that points to it not being the phone

New ID mobile sim in a S21 Ultra and it works fine.

And that points to it not being the SIM either (as long as this phone shows the replacement SIMs correct number and this SIM is registered but for the latter it must be)

Another ID Mobil sim that currently works in an S24 Ultra, this works fine in the A40.

And this points to it not being the phone again.

So why is the new ID mobile sim not working in the A40?

Assuming the S24 works perfectly, with signal, calls and texts showing the correct number and data working fine too then you’ve got me baffled. Unless you recently joined iD and the port hasn’t yet completed but again this new SIM wouldn’t have worked in other phones either

Please help before I pull any more hair out.

I’ve got some hair clippers if you want to borrow them instead. Have you tried a network reset on the A40 with the replacement SIM? - a network reset deletes all saved WiFi networks, network data and IIRC any saved Bluetooth devices. It does not delete your data.

Phone not from ID. But it is new, not 2nd hand/reconditioned.

Have been with ID for years, just got a new phone as screen smashed on old one.

Yes Sim has been registered on acc and in the S21 the number is showing. It doesn't in the A40!

The S24's sim works perfectly in the S24, and I can make and receive calls with it in the S40.

I'll try the network reset again as maybe the port wasn't complete when I tried it before.

More fun and games for tomorrow.

Many thanks for the assist, I'll update once I've tried the reset.

The following isn’t going to find a solution, but may rule out other reasons. If the phone isn’t from iD then we can’t pull their hair out then <also puts my clippers down too>

Have been with ID for years, just got a new phone as screen smashed on old one.

Although doubtful when their SIMs are in our phones certain things (handshakes) have to happen. And one part of this is the system knows the IMEI of the phone (amongst many other snippets of info). I was going to suggest maybe their system is false flagging your account. But being as you’ve said your SIM works in other phones it can’t be that either

I would have also suggested it might have been a possibility it isn’t a UK model (there has been reports of Samsung’s being sold on various selling sites and it transpires those phones were not UK spec models) but as another iD SIM works then yours must be a UK one.

I would then have suggested you go to settings → About phone → Software Information → Service provider software version and given me the last group of letters ie XEU,XEU,/XEU.XEU as this has been stopping Samsung’s working on iD too after the 3G switch off but again it must be fine if another iD SIM works in it.

Yes Sim has been registered on acc and in the S21 the number is showing. It doesn't in the A40!

This is a good problem and I’m clutching at straws. Does it show as unknown?

The S24's sim works perfectly in the S24, and I can make and receive calls with it in the S40.

That’s the bit that’s got me. That SIM in the A40 and its fine

I'll try the network reset again as maybe the port wasn't complete when I tried it before.

More fun and games for tomorrow.

It would be worth trying even just to advise iD if this issue can be raised to their tech team. Even if the port wasn’t completed it doesn’t explain how that SIM works in other phones and the other SIMs work in that phone.

Ok, has reset Network again and it's still the same.

Nothing with XEU in versions 🤷‍♀️

This is current software in case it has any bearing.

This is what's displayed in sim card manager with Sim in the S40

This is what's displayed with sim in the S21, I've cover phone number but if needed I can supply.

Once again, thanks for your help.

Strangely, the sim in old phone an A20e displays the same as the A40 (no number) yet calls work.

Another thought, when on with chat agent I was told using the new sim would generate the configuration messages but I haven't received any. Could this be the source of the problem.

At this point I'm considering just ordering a Lebara sim since at least I know it'll work.

Sorry to have to say this @vpyorkie

But that phone ain’t gonna work

EVR means its locked to the EE network. You can look a reflashing the phone or if it was sold as unlocked then send it back

I have no explanation as to how another iD SIM works in it though, this is a first for me

Also never give out your mobile number or any other personal info, even if someone asks for it. More so on these forums as they’re public and anyone can see this.

Hi @vpyorkie

@Daz_S is correct in that the phone won’t work as it currently stands!
What many people do not realise is that even though a handset is sold as ‘unlocked’ it only refers to using different provider SIMS.
When a handset is sold by a mobile phone provider they have their own software installed on it and unless you are connected to their network the software updates will never work.
Looking at your settings, unless you move to EE (the ‘EVR’ code in the software) you will never get the updates required to be able to connect VoLTE which is required to make/receive calls.
You need to see LTE in the Network Mode (this is a screenshot from my SG J4+)….

I had a SG J4+ with the same problem (software locked to Vodaphone ) and managed to find an answer that unlocked the phone so that it would never be hindered by a network again.

I detailed on how to ‘unlock’ a SG phone to unbranded software (where updates are sent direct from Samsung rather than a phone network) in this post…

Please, take some time to look at ALL the information and watch the video! It may look overwhelming but it really isn’t! Read and look, step back and review again!
If you have any questions with regards to this then I am happy to help!
Good luck x

Well that's a bummer 🤬

Phone was bought unlocked so I just assumed it would work with any sim 🤦‍♀️

I'm not sure my tech skills are up to your suggestion @Decemberangel72 I'd also need to borrow a laptop.

Looks like I'll need to fine someone to help unlock it or find another provider if I want to use the A40. 😢

Thanks for the assistance guys, I'm you found the reason before I went bald. 👩‍🦲

Quick last question if you guys don't mind, please.

Does it have to be a EE sim or would one that piggyback on EE work, like 1pmobile?

Happy to have helped even if wasn’t the outcome we hoped for

If it wasn’t for this 3G switch off you’d have been fine. Thinking about it this explains why it may have worked initially, as if the phone was latching onto a 3G connection is probably would work until it auto latched on to 4G. There were other customers and their old faithful phones worked fine until the 3G was knocked off in there area then they had no calls. It took some head scratching to suss out what had happened.

Yep, some sellers claiming they’re selling unlocked to all networks probably don’t realise these phones are service provider software locked, whereas others will know and sell them anyway.

I used to flash phones years ago and it was by harder back then to source good firmware. I’ve not done any in a good few years now but there are many decent how to’s and good firmware downloads available now too, but get your concerns. Some phone repair shops may offer this service too - IDK

Does it have to be a EE sim or would one that piggyback on EE work, like 1pmobile?

Yes any network piggybacking on EE should work. But maybe ask a friend who is already on 1p to see if they wouldn’t mind trying their SIM in your phone first, if you can make a call you should be good to go.

Or being as you have 14 days to change your mind just order one. Theirs start from £6pm - https://www.1pmobile.com/order-your-SIM?simtype=SB2

Thanks Again,

I'll do a bit of research on flashing (and try not to get arrested).

Could be worse, you could be looking at jail breaking

now that might get a few feds twitching.

@vpyorkie another thing to try, if you wish to stay with iD and don’t want to go down the Flashing route, is to insert an active EE SIM (or one from a provider that uses the EE network) and manually update the software on your phone.
I am assuming that once the software is updated i.e. VoLTE/LTe settings appear, then you can reinsert your iD Mobile SIM and you should be good to go.

Good Luck and I am here if you do have any questions if you wish to go down the Flashing route x
