Ditto. And well said!

My Mother In Law is a casing point. She’s 76+ years young but has had a mobile for several years now. She can ‘use’ it and that’s about it. The M-I-L also has a smart TV with a smart remote. The remote is in a drawer and a simpler remote is in use. And then due to the black Friday deals she bought a bigger smart TV with an even smarter remote. This too is now in a drawer. The ‘old’ smart TV is being put into their ‘snug’ so the F-I-L can finally watch darts on a TV rather than his iPad*

*neither of the in-laws have apple products, we put them on android based devices as that’s what I’m used to, but I’ve given up correcting them. Plus as the m-i-l says an iPad sounds posher!

About a week ago her 85y/o friend was selling her laptop (1.5 yrs old and only used 3, yes 3 times!) at a too cheap to be true price. It’s currently sitting next to this laptop. And it’s lucky it is as there were things on it others would have liked to have known. I’d like to think I’m an honest guy so its being wiped as I type. So why does my in-laws ‘need’ an electronic typewriter (← not my words), well because everything is now offline (← her again, Ive stopped saying online) and they’ve been told they ‘need’ to go digital. Now as she likes to write personal stories and poems it will be used as a typewriter and when I said she can copy her photos off her phone and on to her laptop, well you could’ve knocked me down with an iD Mobile SIM, she was ‘blown away’. I simply said think of it as an ‘iPad’ but with a keyboard.

I sort all of their tech stuff out, not that they’re thick, they just don’t know how.

Yes, although I know my way around things I didn’t know this place (forum) existed until I went a looking. And I would prefer actually speaking (using my voice) to a human too. I can’t type fast and there’s many a time when ‘support’ say are you still there and cut me off (not used iD support yet and probably won’t). As BT used to say, it’s good to talk!

Daz, I reckon this is a familiar story all over the country. I even detest the silly names they give to devices; ‘smart’. If my dad was still around he’d have said and will it do a summersault like billy smart’s circus.

It is, it really is.

Yesterday I had a much younger mate call in a bit of a pickle. His grandparents couldn’t use their phones. His phone is a very modern one and sorts itself out automatically. About 6 hours of calls* later he’d gone round most of a retirement complex and sorted most if not all of their neighbours phones out too. 3G had been turned off and nobody knew what to do and at that time neither did he.

*2 of the calls dropped mid conversation, others had periods of either one of us not hearing the other.

IMHO this simply highlights how vulnerable some of our elderly folk are. I’ve heard some really upsetting stories - I can’t really say much more as those families are very private and future readers may know whom they are, but I’d guess to say this is happening all over the UK.

But then again it’s not just the elderly. As many find, things work out of the box and so they don’t need to know how it works, until it goes wrong. It’s not their fault, if they don’t know they don’t know. There are other problems too. Those of us whom have been knocking about on forums for a good few years (I started in 2008) tend to forget not everyone knows how to change this, where that section is, how to find the link to Chat without being shown the way.

Don’t get me wrong, when these ‘smart things’ are set up correctly they often work well. But like anything they can and do fail. But it’s also when other factors come into play, 3G switch-off, mobile phone mast upgrades, City Fibre disturbing Openreach’s old and brittle cabling, perfectly good mobile phones being deemed too old to work on 4G or simply mother nature and all this ‘stuff’ stops. That’s when we get into bother or can potentially could come to harm.

We’ve become too attached to these devices. What ever happened to kids climbing trees, playing on a skate board or roller skates, scrumping (mainly apples but the farmer didn’t mind) so your mam could make a proper home cooked pie, building dams in a brook, things like that. And yes my kids were brought up doing the stuff I did as a kid (without the scrumping, honest!). Mine are now are in their mid twenties and often remind my wife and I just how much fun they had.

My son, Has just notified me that since jan 2024 he hasn't been able to make  outgoing mobile calls .He can receive calls but is unable to make calls . He has an iPhone 13pro max . His number was Ported over  successfully and he initially could make calls and receive them. But not since January 2024 that's nearly 12mnoths ago all outgoing calls not permitted from this number .

He has a new SIM. . no change .

 Full 5g no change .

Reste phone and network -no change

Emails and E chat online.to id  no change .

My family have  4 id Sims.  No issues. Except my son's .

We have had A host of other issue regarding the account names etc  and contacting id which is  a failure on your side .  After this year. We may cancell all accounts and move to 3. As I'm feed up with the back and forth   ID asking me the same questions over and over again.

Unless this is sorted . I've recommended so many friends. To id as it was a brilliant deal unlimited everything for less than £15  no contract. But now my son is frustrated as he need to make phone calls  with him starting uni .

Sort it please ID ... Up to now your customers service is atrocious and in need of an overall.

Hi @Isaac Olurankinse,

Welcome to the Community!

Sorry to hear about the issues that your son has experienced.

Can you please check that 4G and VoLTE is enabled on the handset?

We can carry out some further troubleshooting but due to the timescale I would advise that he contacts our Live Chat Team.

Kash

Your post was only showing this morning. Hidden posts do happen from time to time, nothing sinister, just down right annoying.

Can you try his SIM in another phone @Isaac Olurankinse? This will show if this is a SIM issue (if it still doesn’t work) or a phone issue (setting VoLTE as per Kash’s advice).

Maybe even try a known working SIM in his phone (again to rule out other possibilities)

I've reported the company practices to OFCOM as I have not received my good will vouchers as  started at the start of my contract this is totally misleading and unexceptable and finally dispite making payments I am unable to make calls

Hi there @Neil Peters

Has Ofcom replied? - I’d be keen to know what they’re going to do about this.

By goodwill vouchers, do you mean a Currys gift card? If so they don’t send them immediately and IIRC you need to claim them.

Is this issue only outgoing calls or all calls? - Are you using a phone supplied by iD mobile? - If not what phone are you using? - Has your area had 3G turned off? - If it has have you enabled VoLTE?

(sorry for all the questions, but one of your answers might sort out the calling issue)

All I no is that I've raised the issue with OFCOM the telecommunications regulatiotors and they will be contacting ID mobile soon if they have not already done so for putting out misleading information to the customers

Oh okay. Feel free to update this topic with the outcome of Ofcom’s investigation.

Just out of interest, which bit is misleading - can you post a link?

If it was anything to do with a Currys gift card then you would need to claim this IIRC
