wrong number shown on recipients phone when sending text messages

So I discovered that when I send an RCS message in Google messenger the wrong phone number is displayed on the recipients phone. I have check the RCS chat settings in messenger and indeed the wrong phone number is shown (it's the original phone number associated with my SIM before porting my number).

I have had the phone for around 5 months and it has been fine until the last week with no problems sending/receiving calls or texts.

I have tried the troubleshooting steps suggested by ID mobile in the FAQ section which have not fixed the issue.

Any suggestions on next steps?

You may have already tried this, but it’s worth checking. Do the below steps work in updating the number in the chat settings?

1) Open Messages, go to Settings (top right, Message Settings), open "Chat Features" or "RCS Chats", verify if this is the correct number or not.

2) If it shows the incorrect one, then head to: https://messages.google.com/disable-chat and you should be able to unregister the number. Once done, turn off the Chat Features/RCS and the phone. Wait a few minutes and turn the device back on and re-enable Chat Features/RCS it should let you re-register/update to the correct number. Alternatively, you can turn Chat Features/RCS off and test SMS after this

If this doesn’t work, it will be worth trying a replacement SIM. This would be a blank SIM card later activated with your number, so it won’t have an association with a temporary number. You would be able to collect one at a local Currys store or order through the app.

Thanks for the reply.

1) checking RCS chats in message settings shows the wrong number

2) I have tried the link and input my phone number but I'm not receiving the verification code. I have checked my phone number is registered with Google in my account and it is.

I have toggled RCS chats off on my phone and tested SMS and then the correct number is displayed in the recipients phone.

I will try the replacement SIM option, what a pain though and don't understand why this would just start happening out of the blue

Hey there @Pixelchris, we’re sorry to hear that.

Our general advice initially would be to follow the instructions sent by @MZone, and then if that doesn’t work, to try a new SIM card.

Therefore, please let us know how you get on with this via the new SIM card @Pixelchris and we can pick it up with you further if you’re still having issues.

Thanks,

Tyler
