Interesting!

So, it may be that I’m using GrapheneOS on my phone rather than the official Pixel OS.

I just noticed on my Pixel 5 / Android 14 / ID Mobile monthly SiM Only that the option to set the Calling Preference in the WiFi calling section has appeared. I’m fairly sure that this has happened over the past month or so as I don’t remember seeing it when I last set up the phone in early April.

I’ve been relying on WiFi calling at home for some time so had used the ADB setup to keep WiFi on in Airplane mode and then used Macrodroid to toggle airplane mode when within range of my home WiFi .

IIRC, Android 14 also asks if you want to keep WiFi in airplane mode when you first enable WiFi when in Airplane mode, so the ADB setup may not be needed on A14 & above.

From previous experience with Google & Lebara, it is not only the carrier / MVNO & phone manufacturer but also the phone model that make a difference on the WiFi calling options. For example, Lebara only enabled WiFi calling on the P5 & above but not on the P4, no amount of chasing Lebara & Google made any difference.

No change to my phone settings either 😞

You can do what I was doing; set WiFi to be on when in airplane mode & use Macrodroid to set airplane mode when in range of your home WiFi. I used 2 macros, one to turn airplane mode on, when in range of home WiFi  and another to do the opposite.

Above is a screenshot of my Pixel 5. I’m going to set up a P4A in a while and will see what happens with that on GrapheneOS vs Google.

I’ve set up my Pixel 4A with GrapheneOS and the WiFi calling preferred option is there but was not there before when I had the stock OS  installed.

Presumably you’ve ‘rooted’ your Pixel 4a to install a non-stock Android, @Cancunia

Do all Play Store apps work on a ‘rooted’ handset?

No need to root your Pixel to install graphene. The only app I've found that won't work is the Halifax banking app. Have a read on the graphene website if you're interested.

Hi @Tyler

I'm having the issue mentioned above, whereby there is no preference toggle in settings to select VoWiFi as the preferred call method. Only a toggle to enable VoWiFi.

As with others, I have to enable airplane mode to force VoWiFi on if there is a vague mobile signal. A preference toggle would solve this in poor reception areas.

Any solution forthcoming on this from either iD mobile or Three ?

Hi @boothy99

Unfortunately there is no known plan to enable this toggle, sorry.

@Tom

That's unfortunate then 😕

Any reason why not? Is it possibly Three protecting their "bandwidth" for VoWiFi with iD piggybacking their system? If not, then it would be of great benefit if it was to be considered and provisioned.

Thanks.

Hi @boothy99, I don’t believe there’s any particular reason for this, we haven’t received any communications through to state that this is coming up in the future. However, we’re always happy to take on customer suggestions and feed this back.

Hi @Lauren 👋

If there's no reason to not have this enabled and the team are willing to take on a suggestion to provide a preference toggle in settings to select VoWiFi as the preferred call method, then would you kindly forward this on? It'd be very much appreciated by us if this could be enabled. A great added value for those of us in areas of poor to fair reception 👍 It'd also negate the need for us to mess about with airplane mode to force VoWiFi or use other apps to disable/enable it when on home WiFi.

Much appreciated,

Dave & many others.

Hi @boothy99

We’ve fed this back, however don’t have anything to announce on the subject at this time.

Ok thanks for passing the request on @Tom 👍 Appreciated. Fingers crossed it's hopefully provisioned.

Good morning all

I am the original poster. You may find this VERY useful…

Using my Android routine workaround to automatically turn flight mode on when on a trusted WiFi connection to force WiFi calling worked until my last firmware update a few weeks ago. I can still call out okay, but people calling me get voicemail; experimenting, I found that when flight mode is first activated, I can receive calls fine, but after a few minutes it does not work. Making an outgoing call fixes it again for a few minutes, but then I am unobtainable again.

If I disable the flight mode, I can receive calls over WiFi calling reliably, but obviously, I am back to WiFi calling dropping as soon as there is a sniff of cellular signal.

I started searching for any new posts on the issue, and, amazingly, I found one that mentioned that the Google assistant can get to the prefer WiFi/cellular sub-menu. I found that hard to believe, so I changed the default assistant on my phone from Alexa to Google and [using speech recognition] said "change WiFi calling options"; to my astonishment, the screen below appeared, and I was able to select the 'call over WiFi' preference. It is working perfectly, and I rebooted the phone to make sure that did not reset the preference. Even if I move outside my house and get 3 bars of cellular signal, so long as my WiFi is connected, the WiFi calling symbol at the top right of the phone is on... fantastic!

Using my Android settings menu for the phone, there is still no preference sub-menu under WiFi calling, but somehow Google assistant can access it. I would be interested to know if this works for you too.

Cheers, GB

😪😭

No such luck here. I used Google Assistant which opened the WiFi Calling setting, but it's no different than before on my (fully updated) Google Pixel 6 / android 14.

No additional options to "Prefer" WiFi Calling.

Hi @boothy99

What a shame. On my Samsung A34 5G, if I put an EE SIM in I can see the sub-menu on the Android settings menu, so my phone definitely has the ability to toggle the preferences, and it is just that IDMobile (Three) hide it; does your Pixel 6 show the sub-menu if you were to use an EE SIM?

Hi @gauge_boson ... nope, I don't have an EE SIM to try, but I'm aware that it is an option if you use EE on a Google Pixel 6.

I've used another network SIM in the past, and that DID have a preference for VoWiFi toggle.... it just wasn't a particularly good deal otherwise. So the Google Pixel 6 CAN have the preference ... it's just that iD don't have it enabled ... yet 😕😠

Hi @boothy99

Understood. It just seems bizarre that on my Samsung phone, Google Assistant can open a sub-menu that is unaccessible from my built-in phone menu.

Perhaps there are some subtle differences between the Google and Samsung versions of Android on the respective handsets, @gauge_boson

I’m guessing the OEMs are able to adjust/customise/tweak many areas in the Android OS for their h/w platform/s.

Is Google Gemini able to help in a similar manner?

Hi @andewhite

I have not tried the Google Gemini AI, but I guess that with there being such a tie-up between Samsung, Android and Google, there seems to be a loophole where the carrier can hide/unhide certain phone settings (Samsung told me that Three, EE, O2 etc can all do this), but Google Assistant seems to have its own separate, direct access in which can see the hidden menu... it is a loophole I hope Three do not close 😁
