Question

My phone periodically is unable to make and receive calls

Without any notification my mobile randomly stops being able to make and receive calls (and text messages), and there is no indication that there is any issue. WhatsApp is fine and other wifi/data apps are ok it just seems that making and receiving calls can stop working. This is even with Wifi calling switched on. When I find out about the problem (i.e. someone contacts me via another method saying they tried to call me) I have to switch on airplane mode and then switch it back off, which seems to reconnect standard calls and messaging.

There is no way to know that this is a problem so I could be missing calls etc and not know.

Seemingly random issues with network services can sometimes be due to issues with the SIM or SIM card reader, @Simon Vaughan.

Perhaps your iD SIM is somehow now damaged or defective.

A replacement SIM might resolve your issues.

Hello @Simon Vaughan

Thank you for getting in touch.

We are sorry to hear of the issues you have been facing with the service.

Is this only happening when you are in one location or all over?

Hi @Natalie W

I’ve only noticed in the last week when I’ve been working from home, the phone indicates that I’ve a signal and when I had wifi switched off I was able to use mobile data to access websites and apps.

Simon.

Hey there @Simon Vaughan, thank you for confirming. Just to check, have you:

  1. Restarted your phone?
  2. Reset network settings? (I can explain how to do so if needed)
  3. Checked your phone number is showing correctly in your settings?

Also to double check, is the issue with calls and texts only?

Thanks,

Tyler

Restarted phone, and have reset network settings. Phone is currently showing my number.

The problem seems to be intermittent and affects both phone calls and texts, data usage is unaffected when there is the problem.

Hi @Simon Vaughan, our apologies for this.

Are you connected to 4G/LTE or 5G here please?

Also, is VoLTE and Wi-Fi calling enabled?

Thanks,

Tyler

In the house it's generally 4G but very weak, so I've got WiFi calling enabled. Outside 5G is not always available in the area.

Hey there @Simon Vaughan, no problem. Since being with us, have you ever tried a free replacement SIM card please?

Thanks,

Tyler

Hey there @Simon Vaughan, as advised by @andewhite, the link above shows how to get one. I’d recommend trying this and seeing if this helps, and if not, reporting back to us here.

Thanks,

Tyler
