Hi, looking for advice please on using my ID Samsung phone whilst in Peru, Argentina and Brazil please? I obviously will use hotel WiFi when possible but how do I avoid a big phone bill if I have to use my phone when not in hotels.

Firstly,  will my phone even work out there?

I've read about buying a local SIM card to avoid huge phone bills but would this mean buying one in every country?

Hi there @Janine Martin

Your phone should work out there.

You would be wise to set your account up prior to going, like checking you have roaming enabled on the account (not just the phone), setting any billing cap. Then checking your phone is set correctly too, like ensuring roaming is off on the phone until you get there, maybe even tweaking the setting so your phone has a manual network connection etc.

And hopefully this might allow you to decide on whether to use your iD SIM or go with a SIM from each country as (at the time of posting):

For Peru:

Roaming Pay monthly Pay-as-you-go****
Calls to UK* £6.00 £6.00
Calls to Peru* £6.00 £6.00
Calls received* £2.40 £2.40

Texts to UK** £1.20 £1.20

* Price per minute

** Please note: MMS charges vary. For further information, refer to Terms & Conditions. If you joined or upgraded on or before 20th June 2023 the MMS cost is £0.30 per message for Roaming within EU Bands 1 and 2.

**** The charges below will apply to all Pay-as-you-go customers starting from 1st October 2024. Find out more about the current charges here.

Well at least that’s the same as Argentina.

Hey there @Janine Martin, welcome to Community!

As you can see as kindly advised by @Daz_S, you can indeed use your phone in Argentina, for the costs send above, which you can find via this link:

Thank you for this.  I did pop into my local Three shop for advice and they weren't helpful at all.  Just sent me away and said "speak to ID"...

‘THAT’ tends to happen if you’re not a direct customer @Janine Martin

What about popping into Currys - they should have iD <clears throat> ‘experts’ in there and they may advise

Or read the first few posts I created regarding setting up our Samsung phones when my wife and I went to Europe:

(ignore crusie, it should have been cruise - I must have been too excited!)

Hey @Janine Martin, sorry to hear that.

Unfortunately, there’s not much Three UK can do in terms of general troubleshooting for phone issues, as although we use Three UK’s network, we’re two completely separate businesses, and they have no control over anything to do with us, other than general signal.

We’re glad we could help.

Thanks,

Tyler

Thanks everyone for your advice. I'll definitely be following your advice (but not for cruising obviously!).

Lol @Janine Martin

Those tweaks worked well for me.

Just remember manual network selection will cause the phone to drop the network in the event of turning the phone off. If you do switch it off you’ll need to manually reconnect (even in the UK). Obviously when you get back moving it back to automatic isn’t a bad idea.

Our phones worked well after the automated rate advice text came through🙄

Oh and the blip when it dropped the roaming network twice at one of the stop offs🤐

But you’ll be fine (hopefully) 😏
