Question

Wifi calling is not working

I’ve checked this thread and tried all the suggestions but wifi calling is still not working for me.

I have another id mobile iphone and that is working fine. I switch on airplane mode and switch on wifi to force the phone to use wifi calling and it works just fine.

However, on the first if mobile iphone I cannot get wifi calling to work. This is a relatively new id mobile account / sim and I don’t think it has ever worked. One difference I can think of is that it is using a esim so I don’t know if that has something to do with the problem.

It seems that the phone *thinks* is has wifi calling set up. You dial a number and it calls as normal but does not ring. After about 20s saying calling it says ‘call failed’.

What is the Network Provider and iOS version on the iPhone where WiFi Calling is problematic, @haroldjwright?

Settings > General > About (scroll down to Network Provider).

Does the iPhone, which works with iD WiFi Calling have the same settings, @haroldjwright

Hmmm, can’t check right now because it’s my wife’s phone and she’s out. She should be back shortly and I’ll check then.

Are you both using the same iPhone model, @haroldjwright

Maybe check if WiFi Calling works with your iD SIM in your spouse’s iPhone?

Also, to make matters worse, even though the phone has 2 bars of cellular signal it can’t make a phone call. It has full wifi so I think the phone is being “smart” and doing wifi calling instead. Even though wifi calling doesn’t work.

I guess I can solve this particular problem by switching off wifi calling. But at home my cellular signal fluctuates between 1 bar and zero bars. So I really need wifi calling to work.

Yeah, I rely on WiFi Calling at home, in my mobile not-spot, @haroldjwright

Although inconvenient, I’ve found the most reliable way to use WiFi Calling with an iPhone is as follows:

  1. Turn on Flight Mode
  2. Turn on Wi-Fi

The downside is having to remember to turn off Flight Mode when leaving home.

Perhaps try forgetting your home Wi-Fi network, on the problem iPhone, then create a new profile for your home Wi-Fi.

My wife’s phone, which is also id mobile, which was working with wifi calling, also has:

Network Provider = iD 64.2

iOS version = 18.5

However, when I went to Settings > General > About it prompted me to update my network settings. Which I (stupidly?) did. Now wifi calling doesn’t seem to work on her phone either. so did it update to 64.2 and that broke it??

So now I have 2 phones where even if I:

  1. Turn on Flight Mode
  2. Turn on Wi-Fi

wifi calling does not work.

With flight mode on and wifi off both phones now seem to be making the call but you never hear ringing. After about 20s the call fails.

OK, bit more info. It’s not 100% not working. It’s flakey. It’s so flakey that it may as well not be working at all.

On both phones (airplane mode on, wifi on) I tried making 10 calls to a 3rd phone. Mostly it just looks like its trying to make the call, but you never hear ringing on the outgoing phone and then it disconnects with failed call. Sometime on the receiving phone it rings once, or doesn’t ring but says it got a call, or even a few seconds after the phone making the outgoing call says call fails the receiving call says it got a call.

Generally a bit futzed. I’ve checked the wifi network - 9ms ping, 44Mbps down, 19.5Mbps up which should be fine.

Over to id mobile I think (to fix things with apple maybe)?

Can you please re-check the network provider on both iPhone devices - thank you.

My guess is your spouse’s iPhone was iD 64.0 before accepting the carrier settings update.

An earlier update, from iD 64.0 to iD 64.1 broke WiFi Calling; update iD 64.2 was supposed to fix issues with iD WiFi Calling, but your experience could suggest some issues may remain.

What model iPhone devices are you each using?

Settings - General - About - Network Provider = 64.2 on both phones

My iPhone = iPhone 13

Wifes iPhone = iPhone 14

I’d say there are definitely major problems with 64.2 still.

I tried to share this earlier but the post was sent to moderator.

This seems to be not quite 100% broken - although it does not function enough to do anything useful.

I tried, with airplane mode on & WiFi on, 10 calls to on each phone, to a 3rd receiving phone. The calling phones just said calling for about 20s and then said call failed. They never made any ringing sound. The receiving phone did actually receive the calls sometimes- kind of. It would ring once and you had no time to answer but the call did seem to get through. It even rang a few seconds after the calling phone said call failed a couple of times.

I’ve now tried a 3rd id mobile phone, my daughters. With airplane mode on & WiFi on, it behaves the same. WiFi calling does not work.

On this phone when I go to Settings - General - About it prompts me to update network settings. I’ve declined on this phone. Network Provider says 64.2 on this device already though.

I’ve also tried the same test on my work iPhone, which is on Vodafone. WiFi calling is working great with that phone.

My conclusion - WiFi calling is broken on id mobile right now. At least on the 3 iPhones that I have tried.

Would somebody from id mobile please respond here?

FYI @andewhite , and thanks for all your help

Wi-Fi calling is working perfectly for us on our iPhone 16 Pro, iPhone 16, and iPhone 14. I assume you tested all three iPhones on the same Wi-Fi network?

Yes, tried 3 id mobile phones (not working) and 1 vodafone phone on the same WiFi network (working perfectly) @WelshPaul

The issue could be with your ISP or router. Try connecting via a different Wi-Fi network if at all possible.

This WiFi network works with vodafone WiFi calling? I can try with different WiFi network on Sunday though.

No two services are the same. Different protocols, ports etc.

@haroldjwright - Hi, I have exactly the same issue and unfortunately there appears to be no resolve for this (at the moment). I have been speaking with ID Mobile and not had any further success. Although some are finding limited success with airplane mode / its not a fix for all…yours seems to be doin gthe same as mine.

I think the lack of response is because ID don’t have an answer yet. It was an update issue from Apple and/or the Network carrier thats seems to have caused it and without a bug fix its not going to improve.

If its any consolation, if you can call through WhatsApp, it appears to work ok for me.

If i have any other success with getting it to work i will post back on here for others.

Today I tested my wife’s phone and my daughter’s phone on a different WiFi network. WiFi calling was working fine on these 2 devices.

So either something changed or it was some issue with the original WiFi network.

I still don’t know whether the problem is resolved on the id mobile where I first had problems. Will need to try that later.
