WiFi calling not working, but enabled

My phone’s Wi-Fi calling is enabled but it doesn’t seem to be working. I can’t make any calls while connected to Wi-Fi even though there’s a signal.

I have any eSIM that operates on an iPhone 16 Pro Max running iOS 26.4

Hi @Alexbw,

Thanks for your message.

We’re very sorry to hear that you’re experiencing issues with Wi-Fi Calling, especially while you’re also having signal problems. We understand how frustrating this can be.

To help resolve this, please try the following steps: restart your phone, toggle Wi-Fi Calling off and back on, and reset your network settings by going to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings. Once done, reconnect to Wi-Fi and check if Wi-Fi Calling starts working again.

Please keep us updated, and we’ll be happy to assist further if the issue continues.

Thanks,

Kwanele

Hi @Parneeuk

We’re sorry to hear that you are also experiencing the same issue on an Android device, especially after already trying the troubleshooting steps provided.

As you have mentioned that you are in a rural area and experiencing sporadic signal indoors, the issue may be related to limited indoor network coverage within your location. This would also explain why calls are intermittently diverting directly to voicemail when the handset temporarily loses connection to the network.

We would recommend checking the following additional settings on the Android device:

  • Ensure Wi-Fi Calling is enabled:
    • Settings
    • Connections / Mobile Networks
    • Wi-Fi Calling ON
  • Ensure VoLTE/4G Calling is enabled:
    • Settings
    • Mobile Networks
    • Enable VoLTE / 4G Calling
  • Manually set the handset to 4G/LTE only instead of 5G

Please also try:

  • Testing calls outdoors to compare coverage stability
  • Turning Automatic Network Selection OFF and manually selecting the network
  • Resetting network settings again after enabling Wi-Fi Calling

If the service continues to remain unstable specifically within your home area after trying the above, please contact us via Live Chat or direct message through our social media platforms so that the coverage and local area can be investigated further.

I am convinced this is an iD back end problem that we cannot fix by fiddling with our phone settings.

Why do I say this?

Wifi calling stopped working over the early May bank holiday on my Pixel 10 Pro X; then with no software / OS / settings changes it started working again by about the Wednesday.

Now after this late May bank holiday it has stopped working again (no settings / App / OS updates of course), although now it’s still not working.

So iD… please stop telling us it’s our phone settings / app / OS updates and actually look at what is going on with the Wifi calling backend.

As an update… I got a 4G antenna as a backup to my main internet which is provided by a UK Starlink subscription.

WiFi calling works if I switch to the 4G router WiFi (it’s using an iD SIM), but not when I switch back to Starlink. In fact the phone thinks it’s still connected via WiFi calling, as it shows the connection as “iD Wi-Fi Calling”, but it doesn’t actually get SMS or let me do voice calls.

So my guess is that the iD Wi-Fi calling backend has some geofencing which has been incorrectly configured to stop Starlink connecting to it.

Just to confirm it is a UK Starlink subscription and it works fine with BBC iPlayer (which can be very picky about geofencing).

Hi @meavydev,

Thank you for your response and for sharing the above information.

From what you've described, you've already carried out a significant amount of troubleshooting and the fact that Wi-Fi Calling works when connected to your 4G router but not when connected via Starlink does suggest that the issue may be related to how the Wi-Fi Calling service is interacting with that particular internet connection.

Unfortunately, we're unable to confirm whether there are any restrictions or routing issues affecting specific internet providers, including Starlink, and we don't have visibility of the Wi-Fi Calling backend systems from here.

As you've demonstrated that:

  • Wi-Fi Calling is enabled and provisioned correctly
  • The service works on an alternative Wi-Fi connection
  • The issue appears specific to the Starlink connection

We'd recommend contacting our Live Chat team so they can raise this for further investigation with the relevant technical teams. You can reach them here: https://www.idmobile.co.uk/live-chat

We appreciate the detailed testing you've carried out, as this information should help the team investigate the issue further.

Regards,

We have two of your sims. Wifi calling doesn't want to work on either phone, even if freshly reset. This appears to be a network problem, not a device problem. Please advise what you're doing to rectify it.

It's important here because whilst the data signal is good the voice connection is TERRIBLE, where people we call from our phones always complain and frequently can't hear us. Sadly we’ll need to change networks if you can't enable WiFi calling or fix the audio problems near our home address. Thanks! Fingers crossed.

A follow up on my last post:

Using some steps recommended by ChatGPT I was able to enable WiFi calling successfully on both phones. However, even though our VoLTE connections are awful- we can barely be understood by people we ring most of the time- our phones ALWAYS default to VoLTE instead of WiFi Calling. Aaaarg! Surely your customers don't want to have to leave their phones perpetually in airplane mode to force WiFi calling and have normal phone calls?!?!

Hi @rkjj22,

Thank you so much for getting in touch with us, please accept my apologies for any inconvenience caused to you in relation to the Wi-Fi calling issues,
The Wi-Fi calling feature will work if the mobile network signal for the calls is weaker than the Wi-Fi signal.

Thanks,
Hosai

Hello,

I have been with ID mobile for years and from the beginning I have had issues with WiFi calls. I have followed all the troubleshooting steps so many times,  the issue is not at one specific location but everywhere.

I have even changed devices since and the same problems continue.

When I follow all the steps the WiFi calls work for a couple of days at the most then stop working again...Can I please get a permanent solution? I have been dealing with this issue for so long and I keep missing important calls, having to reset all my network settings constantly which is also incredibly inconvenient and disruptive.
If I can’t get this permanently solved I am going to have to change providers unfortunately.
