No problem using my monthly plan in France. But I need to call Switzerland from France and cannot see what that might cost, as Switz not within bands 1 or 2 for some reason

I'm happy to be corrected (as I’ve had a good look around the roaming help pages and I can’t find a definitive answer) but I’d have to say you’d be making an international call, and these are not free.

From this -

Our free Roaming destinations are split up into 2 categories, Band 1 and Band 2. Here’s what Roaming includes:

  • Band 1 or 2 destinations: Calling or texting the UK (standard landline and mobile numbers) with remaining inclusive minutes and texts.
  • Band 1 destinations: Calling or texting any Band 1 destination with remaining inclusive minutes and texts.
  • Band 2 destinations: Calling or texting the same destination with remaining inclusive minutes and texts.
  • Using your remaining inclusive data, up to 30GB.
  • Using Add-ons.
  • Receiving incoming calls and texts from any country.

Subject to your allowance and our Fair usage and open data policies.

Please note: The following numbers are blocked while Roaming: Premium numbers starting with 118, 09, 070, non-premium non-geographic numbers (084, 087) and free numbers (080). Calls and texts to Band 2 destinations when not in the same destination are charged at our international rates.

And the following is based on UK to Switzerland whereby the costs (and no I have no idea why PAYG is cheaper):

https://www.idmobile.co.uk/help-and-advice/international-and-roaming-charges

Charges when contacting Switzerland from the UK.

International Pay Monthly Pay-as-you-go
Calls to mobiles* £0.20 £0.10
Calls to landlines* £0.07 £0.05
Texts** £0.30 £0.30
Picture message (MMS)** £0.30 £0.50

* Price per minute

** Price per message/text

Prices are shown including VAT where applicable.

Others may clarify if I’m right or wrong.

Yeah thanks I came to pretty much the same conclusion. I just didn't want to get stuffed with say a 10 min call at £10 a minute, or whatever. Very strange that Switzerland is excluded from include roaming tho.

I know exactly what you mean.

Is was overseas last week and got talking to a guy. He paid £16 for a 9 second call!

Regarding Switzerland, it’s because is not an EU or EEA member.

You could, depending on who you’re going to call, try WhatsApp or Skype instead as they come off your data, not your minutes. There’s probably others that work too, just be mindful of the amount of data some of them can munch through.

Hey there @Alex Grenfell, welcome to Community!

As kindly advised by @Daz_S, calling does cost as Switzerland isn’t included in our inclusive roaming.

We hope the above helped from @Daz_S, but if you have any further questions, please let us know.

Thanks,

Tyler

Helpful but I still don't know what it might cost per minute which would be really helpful!

I totally understood that Switzerland is outside the plan so I turned the phone off when in Geneva.

Based on someone marking this as solved, and I can’t do that unless I’m the author, I’d still have to say calling from France to Switzerland is as per the rates I posted above

Now if you were wanting to dial out from Switzerland, that’s a whole new kettle of fish. That DOES get pricey 🤐and it sounds like you did the right thing:

The table below displays how much you’ll be charged for any minutes, texts or data that you use.

Roaming Pay monthly Pay-as-you-go****
Calls to UK* £2.40 £2.40
Calls to Switzerland* £2.40 £2.40
Calls received* £2.40 £2.40
Texts to Switzerland** £0.60 £0.60
Texts to UK** £0.60 £0.60
Picture message (MMS) sent** £0.60 £0.60
Internet and Data (per MB)*** £1.50 £1.50

* Price per minute

** Please note: MMS charges vary. For further information, refer to Terms & Conditions. If you joined or upgraded on or before 20th June 2023 the MMS cost is £0.30 per message for Roaming within EU Bands 1 and 2.

*** Data is charged or deducted in one kilobyte (KB) increments and any part KB used will be rounded up to the nearest KB

**** The charges below will apply to all Pay-as-you-go customers starting from 1st October 2024. Find out more about the current charges here.

Prices shown include VAT where applicable.

Anyway, I understand why you want hear it from the organ grinder and not the monkey!
