How fraudsters are using AI.Blog
Fraudsters don’t just pickpocket the odd phone or forge a couple of signatures nowadays. Modern day crooks are getting crafty with artificial intelligence. And they’re using it to pull off their schemes in ways that wouldn’t have been possible a few years ago. It’s big business for them too. A 2024 study by twenty-four IT found that UK cybercrime costs the economy an estimated £27 billion per year. While 25% of UK consumers think they’ll be a victim of cybercrime in the future. And with the scammers adding AI to their toolbox of tricks, we’re all going to have to be extra careful in future. So, to help you know what to look out for, here are a few ways they’re using – or could use - AI to hoodwink people… Voice cloning Voice cloning is exactly what it sounds like. By using AI, fraudsters can feed the system recordings of you or someone you know and build an audio version of that person from scratch. Where do they get that sound from though? Well, most of us have plenty of videos up on our social accounts. And they only need about 45 seconds of sound to work with. Once it’s ready, they can recreate the voice of almost anyone – whether that’s your boss, or a family member – and get them to say just about anything. In tons of different languages too. The scammers might use your mum’s voice and call you with a fake story. They’ll pretend they’re on holiday, but there’s been an emergency, and need you to send them some money. If you get a call like that, put the phone down and text your mum instead to check. It’s better to be safe than sorry. Some have gone even further. Certain groups have started to use it to crack into bank accounts that need voice recognition prompts to login. It’s scary stuff. Deepfakes This is quite similar to voice cloning, but it uses a fake video instead. Scammers will create a clip of someone, saying and/or doing something that never actually happened. And then use it to convince you to do something for them. Imagine you work in accounts for a company and get a video from the CEO telling you to transfer money to a specific account. You might not think twice about it. You do it, and later find out you’ve just transferred huge sums of cash to a trickster. This isn’t just any old scenario either. A similar situation actually happened in Hong Kong. The New Yorker reported that “a finance worker had been tricked into paying out twenty-five million dollars after taking part in a video conference with who he thought were members of his firm’s senior staff”. That’s one expensive mistake. Phishing Phishing is a pretty old-school scam. We’ve all had loads of those emails that look legit but are actually fraudsters (posing as brands and people) trying to snatch your personal info. Well, with AI, they’re about to get a whole lot more sophisticated and trickier to spot. The scammers use AI algorithms to analyse stacks of online data about you and other potential targets. They’ll then use all that research to craft even more personalised emails or text messages that seem tailor-made just for you. Which’ll make them far more convincing. They might mimic the writing style of your best mate, one of your colleagues, or even your bank. So, when you get that message from HSBC asking for some sensitive account details, you probably won’t even pause before clicking on that link. Sneaky, right? Cracking security AI can give the bad guys an edge against pretty sophisticated security systems now too. By using a machine learning algorithm, they can study how they work (and change) over a period of time. Then, once they’ve found a chink in the armour, they’ll exploit the loophole to break in and snaffle up all of the info they can get their hands on. Whether they’re cracking passwords, bypassing firewalls, or slipping past antivirus software, the AI can help them to stay one step ahead of any developments in the security. Generative AI You’ve probably heard all about the Willy Wonka experience up in Glasgow by now. If you haven’t though, it was anything but sweet. Pictures were all over the event’s socials and website showing off Willy’s magical factory. And because it looked amazing, it helped them to shift a boatload of tickets. Only issue is, none of it was real. The organisers used generative AI to make their adverts. With software pumping out images of a place that didn’t exist. When people got there, the reality was a couple of underwhelming sets and a few balloons. The actors even had terribly written scripts to follow that had been put together with AI. All in all, the organisers thought they could make a quick buck, with AI doing the heavy lifting to get people through the door. Run into any AI-based scam tactics that we haven’t mentioned? Give us a heads up and tell us about them down below.

May the 4th be with you.
May 4th is officially Star Wars Day. But why? And when did it all begin? Let’s dive into the world of Jedi, Siths and Ewoks to find out what makes May 4th a date to remember. Whether you’re a seasoned Star Wars fan or just curious about the hype, here’s all you need to know about a galaxy far, far away’s big day. What is Star Wars Day? Star Wars Day celebrates the amazing movies, epic storylines and unforgettable characters of the Star Wars universe. The date, May 4th, plays on the pun "May the Fourth be with you." Yes, you guessed – it’s a cunning twist on the iconic Star Wars quote "May the Force be with you." This catchphrase is a cornerstone of Star Wars and embodies the good wishes Jedi give to each other, hoping that the universal power aids their journey (and to be fair, it usually does) The concept of celebrating Star Wars on May 4th reportedly started with a grassroots movement among fans, gaining traction across internet forums and eventually being embraced officially by Lucasfilm and Disney. The first organized celebration of Star Wars Day took place in 2011 at the Toronto Underground Cinema in Canada, filled with costume contests, trivia games, and mash-ups of fan-favourite clips. As the popularity of Star Wars Day grew, it became a day for all things Star Wars—movie marathons, special merchandise releases, and even themed parties. Notable events include surprise announcements from Lucasfilm or special appearances by cast members. It’s a day where fans of all ages come together to celebrate their love for the saga. Your guide to the Star Wars movies If all this Star Wars talk has got you in the mood for movie marathon, here’s a quick round-up of all the episodes in the series: 1. Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope (1977) - Where it all began. Join young Luke Skywalker as he embarks on a journey with C3PO, R2D2 and other famous helpers to rescue Princess Leia from the clutches of the evil Darth Vader. 2. Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back (1980) - Often hailed as one of the best sequels ever, this film ups the stakes with its darker tone and (spoiler alert!) the famous revelation of Luke’s parentage. 3. Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi (1983) - The epic conclusion to the original trilogy where the Rebels make their final stand against the Empire, and Luke confronts Darth Vader and Emperor Palpatine. 4. Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace (1999) - Jump back to the beginning of the saga where we meet a young Anakin Skywalker, a spirited Queen Amidala, and the wise Jedi Qui-Gon Jinn. Oh, and Jar Jar Binks. 5. Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones (2002) - Anakin, now a Jedi apprentice, falls in love with Padmé amid a growing separatist movement that threatens the galaxy. 6. Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith (2005) – Here we witness the tragic fall of Anakin Skywalker and the rise of the Galactic Empire. 7. Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens (2015) - A new threat arises as the First Order seeks to rule the galaxy. Meet new heroes Rey, Finn, and Poe as they join the Resistance. 8. Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi (2017) - The saga continues with Rey seeking the help of Luke Skywalker, who is hesitant to return to the battle. 9. Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker (2019) - The epic conclusion to the Skywalker saga, where all the characters face their final battles. Now, because of the different timelines, you’ll notice that episode IV is actually the first Star Wars from 1977, and episode I was actually released more than 20 year later. And that has a lot of people asking the question: “Which order should I watch them in?” Well, we’re going to avoid any controversy and say that both movie release date order and episode order have their advantages. For newcomers, watching the movies in release order (starting with ‘Episode IV -A New Hope’) is a great way to experience the unfolding of the saga as it did for original audiences. But if you’re after a more linear storyline progression, episode order (starting with ‘Episode I - The Phantom Menace’) is the way to go. Memorable Star Wars quotes Star Wars isn’t just known for its epic battles and cosmic settings, but also for its unforgettable lines that have echoed through space and time. How many of these do you know? “May the Force be with you.” This just had to be the first quote we mentioned! This classic farewell wish is used throughout the Star Wars series but was first heard in "A New Hope." It’s a symbol of good luck and protection. "Help me, Obi-Wan Kenobi. You’re my only hope." Princess Leia’s holographic message in "A New Hope" sets the heroic quest in motion and is one of the most iconic moments in the franchise. "I’ve got a bad feeling about this ." Uttered by multiple characters across all the Star Wars films (although surely Han Solo said it most times), this line captures the essence of imminent danger that’s become a running theme. "It’s a trap!" Admiral Ackbar’s urgent declaration in "Return of the Jedi" during the pivotal Battle of Endor has become a popular exclamation point for real-world predicaments. "No, I am your father." Perhaps one of the most famous movie quotes of all time, this bombshell from Darth Vader to Luke in "The Empire Strikes Back" is a major plot twist in the series. We hope you learned a lot! And if you need more of a Star Wars fix there are movie and TV spin-offs to enjoy, from Rogue One to the Mandalorian. Plus, a whole world of amazing PC and console games. Whatever you choose to do, the Force will be with you. Always!

Reduce your environmental impact this Earth Day.Blog
According to a study by the EcoExperts, the average Brit creates around five tons of CO2 emissions every single year. Woah. And while that’s a whopping number, there’s loads we can do to tackle it. If all of us do a little bit here and there, we can make sure our impact on the planet is as small as possible. And you don’t have to go off grid and live in a cave to play your part. So, let’s check out a few easy ways for you to make your tech footprint smaller on Earth Day and beyond… Trade-in your old device Getting a new phone is pretty exciting, right? You’ve got all those cool advanced features to try out. And a shiny, upgraded camera for your Insta selfies. But when you take a step back, it’s also the right time to guarantee that your old one doesn’t end up in the bin. If you trade-in your old phone with iD Mobile, it’ll live on as a refurbished device. When it’s in good nick, it might go on to become someone else’s mobile. But if not, any useful parts we can scrounge will be stripped out and recycled to create completely new phones. It’s clever stuff. Back in 2021, you lot traded in exactly 2876 phones. Which is a whole lot of waste that’s saved from going into landfill. And on average, those customers pocketed £150 for their troubles. So, what are you waiting for? Make the right call and send it off. Or if it’s alright, hang onto it instead But if you really love your phone, it’s still in great shape, and you can wait for that upgrade, keep it a bit longer. Extending the life of smartphones can help to lower carbon dioxide pollution by a pretty mega amount. If all of us kept our phones for an extra year instead of binning them, we’d reduce pollution by four million tons by 2030. That’s the same as planting 200,000 trees, taking over 2 million cars off the road, or creating another five Hyde Parks. Reduce your phone’s carbon footprint Did you know that on average, a mobile phone creates about 70 kg of CO2 a year when it’s used for 3.5 hours each day? And if you’re anything like us, you probably use yours for way longer than that! When you start adding it all up, that’s 1% of the average carbon footprint just in calls, texts, and data use alone. But here’s how you can get those stats down a bit: Stream your favourite show over Wi-Fi instead of 4G/5G when you can. Toggle your video settings to a lower resolution when you’re downloading or watching something on YouTube. That cat video probably doesn’t need to be in 4K. Turn off automatic downloads for your apps. This’ll save your data and your battery life too. Switch off background data and shut down any apps when you’re not using them. Recycle old appliances and gadgets Right, we’ve tackled phones – but what about all the other tech we’ve got lying about at home? Well, we’ve got your back there too. If you didn’t know already, we’re proud to be part of the Currys group. At Currys we’re the number one retail tech recycler in the whole of the UK. And with us recycling over 60,000 tons of e-waste every year, we have the numbers to back that up. If you help out and do some recycling yourself though, you’ll get something back from us. Through our Cash for Trash scheme, bring in your old unwanted electronics and you’ll get at least £5 off whatever you buy next. Result. Plus, it doesn’t even matter if you bought that knackered toaster or ancient flip phone from us either. Just pop down to your local store and we’ll take it off you and handle the rest. It’s that simple. Save energy at home There are loads of things you can do around your place to use less energy and reduce your environmental impact: If you leave a room and don’t plan on going back anytime soon – switch the lights off. Otherwise, it’s a real waste of electricity. And your partner won’t shout at you either. Buy an energy efficient appliance - you can get washing machines, dishwashers, fridges, and other kitchen appliances that all use less energy. Unplug devices (or switch off plugs) when you’re not using them – games consoles, TVs, your phone charger. Whatever it is, it’s worth doing. Plus, when you do all of this, you won’t just be doing your bit for the planet. You’ll be saving some cash on your utility bills too. So, it’s a win-win. Plant trees – yes, really. An average mature tree can absorb 20kg of CO2 a year. Which means that planting just four of them a year would offset the CO2 made by your mobile phone usage annually. So, if you want to balance things out, here’s the solution! Companies like Carbon Neutral Britain have special programs where you can pay to offset your carbon emissions. For only £6.99, they’ll plant 20 trees around the world – creating new British woodland, but also stopping deforestation in the Amazon. Instead of shelling out for that meal deal on your lunch break, you know what to do with that spare cash… Got any other great ways to reduce your impact on the environment? Then tell us about them down below.

Tips for capturing the colours of spring.Blog
Spring is finally here. The sun's shining, flowers are blooming, and wildlife’s waking up. That means it's time to get outside, enjoy the warmer weather, and take some glorious snaps with your phone! What's great about most modern smartphones is that they're packing some really flashy cameras. Making it super easy to point and shoot great pics whenever inspiration strikes or it's time for that spontaneous selfie. But you can really up your photography game if you follow our top photo-taking and editing tips below. You'll be lighting up your friends' social feeds with colourful spring pics in no time… Make the most of that natural light Natural light is a photographer's best friend. And that soft spring sunshine will perfectly illuminate your subjects for vivid, detailed pics that’ll really stand out. Use the longer days to your advantage, and don’t forget to capture some stellar sunrise and sunset shots too. Everything looks better at “golden hour”, with larger shadows and dramatic colours in the sky making those big landscape snaps look amazing. Just make sure you’re paying attention to where all that light is coming from. Whoever or whatever you're photographing is always going to look best when lit from the front rather than from behind. Get up close and personal A big countryside shot filled with stunning wildflowers will always bag you plenty of likes of Instagram. But if you want to truly capture the intricate beauty of vibrant spring plants and colourful critters — don’t be afraid to get up close. Instead of zooming in on the texture of a flower petal or the wings of a bee, try the macro mode on your phone instead. The camera will adjust its settings to provide a narrow depth of field, so it’ll blur out the background and really bring your subject into focus for pro results. Use the rule of thirds This is a classic photography trick. Rather than having your adorable pet, other half, or that gorgeous cherry blossom tree right in the middle of your frame — place your subject in the left or right third so that they’re slightly off-centre instead. It’s a simple but effective technique that’ll make your photos look a lot more natural and balanced. It’ll draw your eyes to the subject but allow the background to provide plenty of space and context — especially if you get low to capture all those details behind. And if you want to be super precise, try turning on grid lines on your phone to help you square things up. See more colours with HDR If your smartphone has an HDR (High Dynamic Range) mode, you can use it to really bring your springtime photos to life. This neat setting will take multiple shots at different exposures and combine them to create an image with better contrast, brightness, and colour accuracy. Giving you an even truer picture of the scene you’re capturing. This HDR tech is super useful when there’s a wide range of light present, so experiment with this mode when taking snaps of landscapes with bright skies and dark shadows. Just make sure to keep a steady hand when using HDR mode, as it usually takes longer to capture a photo. You could always invest in a little phone tripod for the crispest, blur-free HDR pics. Use filters to spruce up your spring pics Have you ever taken some stunning photos, got home ready to share them online, but realised they’re looking a little… dull? Yep, it can really take the spring out of your step. But with the photo filters built into your phone, you can easily enhance your shots in just a couple of taps. Filters tweak things like colour saturation, contrast, brightness, and temperature to really make your pics pop. You can adjust just one or two things if you like, or even use a special photo editing app to get even more creative (there are loads of them out there!). And remember, social platforms like Instagram and Facebook let you play around with filters before hitting the ‘share’ button too. Rely on AI for fast and smart edits Plenty of top smartphones are now packing AI to help you edit your photos in record time. Got a photobomber ruining an otherwise perfect shot? Devices like the Google Pixel 8 and Samsung Galaxy S24 use AI to cleverly cut them out like they were never there! You can also use these AI-powered phones to unblur your pics and give them a good once over. The Samsung Galaxy S24 even recommends some handy edit suggestions — teaching you which settings can change the look of your photos so know what to look out for next time. Snapped some cracking spring-themed photos with your smartphone? Share your best pics below and we'll shout-out the one with the most likes at the end of the month! And if you’ve got some more top spring photography tips, we’d love to hear them in the comments too.

Women who changed the tech world.Blog
International Women’s Day is coming up soon. And to celebrate the occasion on the 8th of March, we’ve made a list of ten of the most influential women who have helped shape the world of technology. The ground-breaking research and work carried out by these tech trailblazers led to the creation of everything from the internet and Wi-Fi to smart security systems. Even space travel wouldn’t have been possible if not for some of the names on our list! Computer programming: Ada Lovelace If you can believe it, the very first computer programmer was born in 1815. And her name was Ada Lovelace — the daughter of renowned poet Lord Byron. Lovelace was a remarkable mathematician who worked on Charles Babbage’s Analytical Engine (considered the world’s first computer) and created what’s believed to be the first ever algorithm — ‘Note G’. To commemorate her contributions and the achievements of women in STEM (science, technology, engineering, or math) careers, Ada Lovelace Day is celebrated on every second Tuesday in October. So, make sure to jot it down in your calendar! Internet: Radia Perlman Can you now imagine our world without the internet? Well, if it wasn’t for Radia Perlman (nicknamed the “Mother of the Internet”), you probably wouldn’t be reading this article. Born in 1951, Perlman is a computer programmer who invented the Spanning Tree Algorithm and Protocol. In a nutshell, this formed the fundamentals for the operation of network bridges and established the basic rules of internet traffic. Wi-Fi: Hedy Lamarr Hedy Lamarr was a household name during Hollywood’s golden age. But did you know that she loved inventing things when she wasn’t filming for the silver screen? And she was completely self-taught, too. During the second world war, Lamarr and avant-garde composer George Antheil thought up a clever communication system which helped make Allied radio-guided torpedoes harder for the Axis powers to detect or jam. And it was their work that later inspired frequency hopping technologies we use today — like Wi-Fi, GPS, and Bluetooth. Telecommunications: Dr. Shirley Ann Jackson In 1973, Shirley Ann Jackson became first black woman ever to earn a doctorate from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). But it was her research into theoretical physics that led to some huge technological breakthroughs that we simply couldn’t function without today. Jackson’s work enabled others to invent everything from the touch-tone telephone to solar cells, fibre optic cables, and the tech behind caller ID. Space exploration: Katherine Johnson In 1962, astronaut John Glenn became the first American to orbit the Earth. But his landmark achievement wouldn’t have been possible if not for the efforts of mathematician Katherine Johnson. Her calculations of orbital mechanics at NASA were essential in the success of the USA’s early crewed spaceflights. So much so, that when awarded a Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2015, Johnson recalled Glenn saying: “If she says they’re good (Katherine's numbers), then I am ready to go.” GUI: Adele Goldberg Computers probably wouldn't be as easy to use today if not for the wonderful work of Adele Goldberg. A key member of the Xerox PARC research team, Goldberg's contributions to the Smalltalk-80 programming language led to the development of graphical user interfaces (GUI) in computers. You know those windows, menus, and icons we click on every day? Yep, it was Goldberg who brought these ideas to life. Her concepts for the Xerox Alto computer are also what inspired Apple’s very first computer. Moon landing: Margaret Hamilton Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin are always the first names that come to mind when we think about the first moon landing in 1969. But Margaret Hamilton’s critical work as a software engineer (a term she herself coined) was vital in the success of NASA’s legendary Apollo program, with the code that Hamilton and her team wrote at MIT helping Apollo 11 touchdown on the Moon’s surface. Rocket systems: Annie Easley Annie Easley was an African American computer scientist and mathematician. Over her 34-year career, she worked on everything from NASA rocket systems to developing codes that analysed alternative power technologies — including the battery tech used for early hybrid vehicles. Her contributions to NASA’s Centaur project also helped in launching future satellites and space vehicles, including the Cassini to Saturn in 1997. But Easley also spent her career advocating for equal opportunities in technology for people of all backgrounds. Her work not only had a huge impact on the field of science, but on society as a whole. Home security: Marie Van Brittan Brown Have you got a smart security system at home? Well, you can thank Marie Van Brittan Brown for that. She was a nurse who developed the first home security system in the ‘60s with her electrician husband Albert Brown, as a way of feeling safer in their crime-ridden New York neighbourhood. The couple’s first prototype was basically a peephole camera connected to some monitors, with a mic that they could shoo away intruders with. But they later innovated a remote-controlled door locking mechanism and a panic alarm. When the couple were awarded their patent in 1969, Marie’s name came first. Domain names: Elizabeth Feinler Elizabeth Feinler was heavily involved in the early development of the internet. She held an influential director role at the Network Information Centre (NIC) in California between 1972 and 1989, but is perhaps best known for helping to create the Domain Name System (DNS). This is what lets us access websites by using easy-to-remember domain names instead of complex IP addresses. So, you can thank her for dot coms, dot nets and the like! Giveaway Time! Top tips to spring clean your phone.Blog
It’s time to give everything a good spring clean, including your mobile phone! We’re not just talking about giving the screen a quick wipe – it’s a good idea to clean out the clutter that’s under the hood too. Having a proper clear out of unused files, apps, photos and other stuff can really help with your phone’s performance. We’re talking speedier performance, longer battery life and quicker loading times. Plus, when you want to find that great holiday snap, you won’t have to dig through years of memes and screenshots to find it. So, let’s begin your mobile spring clean… Cull your contacts Take a look at your contact list. Are there any unfamiliar names on there? If so, it’s time to delete some numbers. If you want to double-check the name before you remove them entirely, go into WhatsApp. Their profile picture should (hopefully) remind you. And while you’re on WhatsApp, why not clear out your old chats? That group organising your friend’s hen do from a couple of years ago hasn’t been touched since. It’s time for it to go. Organize your home screen Tidy up your home screen by grouping similar apps into folders. This cuts down the onscreen clutter and makes it easier to find what you need. Plus, fewer icons mean less strain on your phone's processor, which can give the speed a bit of a boost. Get rid of unused apps We’ve all got apps we don’t use anymore. And a lot of them continue working in the background, even when we’ve completely forgotten about them. Uninstalling them is a quick way to free up some space, and it’ll save your phone from working harder than it needs to. Top tip: once you’ve binned your unused apps, check that the remaining ones are all updated. You don’t want to miss out on the latest bug fixes or handy new features. Delete photos and videos Having tons of photos and videos in your camera roll can take up a lot of storage space. So, the best place to start is by having a good tidy. Get rid of anything not worth keeping – do you really want loads of versions of that unimpressive selfie? Then move everything else to external or cloud storage. Even if storage isn’t a massive issue, it’s still worth doing. And if you do ever lose your phone, you’ll have everything backed up. Turn off location tracking Do you really want X (formerly known as Twitter) to know your exact whereabouts? It’s not just a question of privacy - apps constantly checking your location can drain your battery. That’s why turning off location tracking can make a big difference to your battery life. Turning location tracking off – or controlling which apps can see where you are – is really easy. Just search for ‘location tracking’ in your settings and you can do everything from there. Clear your cache Websites and apps store information on you. This helps you log in, fill out forms, or remember what’s in your basket. But over time, all this saved data can slow things down. You can clear your cache through your internet browser, and it only takes a few minutes to do. The exact method varies, but if you go into settings you’ll usually find a menu called something like ‘Clear browsing data’. Reset. As a last resort If your phone is still slower than you’d like and you’ve tried everything else, it might be time for a factory reset. It’ll wipe everything from your phone, giving you a complete fresh start – as if it was fresh from the factory! Before you take the plunge though, make sure you back everything up properly. Use iCloud for iPhones and Google Drive or OneDrive for Android. Wipe clean your phone Phones can get pretty dirty, from smudged screens to dusty charging posts. So it’s a good idea to clean them regularly. Before you start cleaning, unplug any cables and switch off your phone. Then you can get to work. Google and Apple recommend using a 70% alcohol wipe for the job, but only use it on your screen and the casing at the back - you don’t want to risk getting any moisture into the headphone port or speakers. Oh, and let’s not forget your phone case. Remove it, then clean it. With plastic, silicone, and rubber cases, you can soak them in some warm water and detergent for a couple of minutes. If there are still any stains, use an old toothbrush to get rid of them. Then just make sure to dry the case off with a cloth before you put it back on your phone. Giveaway Time! Want to give your house a good spring clean too? We can help you there as well because we are giving you the chance to win a brand new EUFY RoboVac 15C! To enter, all you need to do is tell us what your top spring cleaning tip or hack is. Whether it's weird, wonderful, or just plain common sense we want to know! Simply write your response below and click reply. Entries close at 23:59 on 14th March 2024, and we'll announce the lucky iD community winner shortly after. Good luck!

How to spring clean your phone.Blog
Now that there’s a tiny hint of sun, it’s time for a good spring clean. And that includes your phone. It’s all well and good giving your screen a quick wipe with some anti-bac – but what about decluttering the stuff that’s on it too? Having a proper clear out can help with your phone’s performance. From longer battery life to quicker loading times. Plus, when you want to find that great holiday snap, you won’t have to dig through years of memes and screenshots to find it. Delete photos and videos This is a pretty obvious one. Having tons of photos and videos in your camera roll can take up a lot of storage space. So, the best place to start is by having a good tidy. Get rid of anything not worth keeping – after all, you don’t need 45 versions of that one selfie. Then move everything else to external or cloud storage. Even if storage isn’t a massive issue, this is still worth doing. If you do ever lose your phone, you’ll have everything backed up. Remove some apps We’ve all got apps we don’t use anymore. Or the ones we keep around for those just-in-case situations. But do you really need them? We don’t think so. A lot of apps work in the background, even when you’re not using them. So, having a root around and getting rid is a quick way to free up some space – and save your phone from working harder than it needs to. Tip: once you’ve binned your unused apps, check that the remaining ones are all up to date. You don’t want to miss out on up-to-date security or handy new features. Clear out your contacts You’re scrolling down your contact list. Who’s Mark? Your guess is as good as ours. If you’ve got one too many unfamiliar names in there, it’s definitely time to delete some numbers. But, if you want to double check before you remove them entirely, fire up WhatsApp. Their profile picture should remind you. And while you’re on WhatsApp, why not clear out your old chats? That group organising your friend’s hen do from a couple of years ago hasn’t been touched since. It’s time for it to go. Turn off location tracking You don’t need Twitter to know where you are every second of the day. And when it comes to improving battery life, turning off location tracking can make a big difference. Especially if your phone is just sitting in your bag. Apps constantly checking to see where you are drains your battery. And let’s be honest, it’s a little bit creepy too. Turning location tracking off – or at least controlling which apps can see where you are – is really easy. Just search for ‘location tracking’ in your settings and you can tweak everything from there. Clear your cache Websites and apps store info on you to help you log in, fill out forms, or remember what’s in your basket. But over time, this saved data can slow things down. You can clear your cache through your internet browser (whether that’s Chrome, Safari etc) and it only takes a few minutes to do. Reset If all else fails and your phone is still painfully slow, it might be time for a good old factory reset. It’ll wipe everything from your phone as if it was brand new - giving you a complete fresh start. Before you take the plunge though, make sure you back everything up properly. Use iCloud for iPhones and Google Drive or OneDrive for Android. Otherwise, all your stuff will be gone for good. Physically clean your phone You’ve cleaned up the digital side of things. Now for the physical bit. Phones can get pretty grimy. After all, most of us use them every single day. And that can cause a right mess over time – from gunk in the charging port, to a sticky screen. Before you start cleaning, unplug any cables, and switch off your phone. Then you can get to work. Google and Apple recommend using a 70% alcohol wipe for the job. But only use it on your screen and the casing at the back. Because you don’t want to risk damaging it by getting moisture in the headphone port or speakers. Don’t forget your phone case either. Just take it off the phone before you clean it. With plastic, silicone, and rubber cases, you can soak them in some warm water and dish soap for a couple of minutes. If there are any stains left over, use an old toothbrush to get rid of them. And make sure to dry the case off with a cloth before you put it back on your phone. Giveaway Time! Want to give your house a good spring clean too? We can help you there as well because we are giving you the chance to win a brand new EUFY RoboVac 15C! iPhone 15 vs Nothing Phone 2.Blog
Apple’s latest smartphone – the iPhone 15 – is already being challenged by a new kid on the block. The Nothing Phone 2 has been dubbed ‘the iPhone killer’. Sounds kind of dramatic, right? Well, there’s some truth in it. These are two super speedy, powerful phones packed with all the latest mobile tech. Making this a heavyweight phone clash for the ages! So, we’re here to see how the pair stack up against each other. We’ve picked out a few of their biggest advantages to find out what makes them tick. Hopefully our handy comparison will help you to make the right call… iPhone 15 Does Apple’s latest need much of an introduction? The iPhone is one of the most popular handsets for a reason… More battery When it comes to longer battery life, the iPhone 15 takes this one. If you’re away from a plug socket all day – or, god forbid, you left your charger at home – it’ll easily last a full day without needing a top up. So, you can stream your favourite shows, beat your high score, and listen to a load of tunes. But still have plenty of juice leftover too! Improved brightness We love the sun as much as the next guy. But it can be a right pain when you’re trying to see what’s happening on your phone. Luckily the iPhone 15 has a seriously high peak brightness of 1644 nits. Even when the sun’s beaming down on it, everything stays nice and clear. Meaning if you’re sat by the pool on your summer holiday, it won’t get in the way of your eBook or the playlist you’re trying to make. IP68 protection Just dropped your iPhone in the paddling pool? Don’t go off the deep end. Apple have given the iPhone 15 a waterproof body, with an IP68 design that means it can easily survive a quick dip and splashes from the kids. Phew. 4K video on the front camera If you fancy yourself as the next big YouTuber, then the 4K front facing camera will make your vlogs look even better. And if you’re just a regular average Joe, video calls will get the star treatment too. Software support Apple have come out and told us that they’re committed to supporting the iPhone 15 with updates for the long term. That means you’ll get all the latest security improvements and fun features for the foreseeable. And that’s great news, because you won’t feel like you have to upgrade every year just to keep up! Nothing Phone 2 What’s the Nothing Phone 2 got going for it then? Well, definitely not nothing. There’s plenty to like about it… Bigger screen For a start, its screen is a real looker. It’s 0.6 inches bigger than the iPhone 15. So, if you want to make everything you watch or play even more immersive, it’s a great shout. It’ll definitely help to take those long morning commutes to the next level! Higher refresh rate Speaking of gaming, the display is also rocking a 120 Hz refresh rate. That means your gameplay is going to be silky smooth, and your in-game actions will be way more responsive. This can be the difference between victory and defeat in those fast-paced multiplayer arenas, where your reactions need to be lightning fast to win. After all, every millisecond counts. Extra CPU cores Most of us use our phones for pretty much everything nowadays. Texting mates. Sending work emails. Doing a bit of online shopping. And if you’re anything like us, that means you’ve probably got a gazillion different apps and tabs open at once too. The Nothing 2 will make light work of all that though. With extra CPU cores, this thing is a multitasking machine. Zip back and forth between even the chunkiest, power-hungry apps – all without lag. Swap from that facetime call with your nan to the holiday you’re in the middle of booking. Then check the weather over in Spain before your trip, and pop back to finish your conversation. There’ll be no slowdown in sight! Better charging wattage Watts that? Higher wattage charging you say? Nice. The 45W charging function makes the Nothing 2 charge in a flash. So, you don’t have to wait around for ages twiddling your thumbs while your phone’s charging. Letting you spend more time doing the fun stuff. Which of the two phones do you think you’ll pick up? Let us know in the comments down below.

Boost Your Mood This Blue Monday.Blog
January often marks a time of new beginnings and goal-setting for the year ahead. However, it can also bring a sense of melancholy for many. The festive cheer and close family gatherings of the holiday season give way to a quieter, more reflective period. Despite this, there are several ways to infuse your days with positivity. We have some great tips to help brighten your mood. What is Blue Monday? 'Blue Monday' started in 2005 as part of an ad by a travel company. They said they figured out the saddest day of the year using things like weather, how long until the next holiday, and how long since people have been paid. But the expert who helped come up with this idea later said we should think about happy things instead, especially when making new goals. Now, people use Blue Monday as a reminder to take care of themselves. Here are some fun things to try: Get moving. Exercise is a great way to feel good. It doesn't have to be boring; you can ride a bike in the park, go for a run, or play a game like football with friends. This can make you feel better, get you outside, and let you hang out with others. Watch a Happy Movie or TV Show Happy movies or TV shows can lift your spirits. Watching a movie with a good ending or a funny TV show, even if you've seen it before, can make you feel better. Try watching something like “The Pursuit of Happyness”, “The Sound of Music”, "Forrest Gump," or a movie with Adam Sandler. Watch with family or friends for more fun. Go shopping for yourself January is a good time to buy something special for yourself, especially with the sales. Maybe you've been wanting a new laptop, a trip, or cool shoes. Go ahead and treat yourself! Read a Good Book Reading can take your mind off things, which is good for you. Whether you like stories or books that help you learn, there's a book for everyone. Find a quiet place, turn off your phone, and start reading. Talk to family and friends We’re talking about the people that are always rooting for you, no matter what you do or where you are, in your mind and in reality. These are the people that make you feel better just for having chatted. They may be there for Christmas and other festive moments, but they’re also there when you’re feeling blue. Pick up the phone and call them, text them or set some time for a video call. Ask for Help if You Need It Sometimes, feeling sad in January is more serious. It's important to look after your mental health just like your physical health. Talking to friends and family is good, but sometimes you need extra help. Groups like CALM and the Samaritans are there to talk to you. Asking for help is the first step to feeling better. Remember, you're not alone. Blue Monday Giveaway To help boost your mood this Blue Monday, we’re doing an exciting giveaway! This is where the Community comes together and in doing so, the reward just gets better! What is Safer Internet Day?Blog
Safer Internet Day is a yearly event that's held on the second day of the second week of February. Now recognised in over 170 countries, SID aims to promote the safe and positive use of the internet — especially among children and young people. In this article, we're going to explain more about this important day and share some top tips on how to stay safe when using the web. We’ve also recommended some powerful tools you can use to protect your child from harmful content. When is Safer Internet Day 2024? This year, Safer Internet Day will take place on Tuesday the 6th of February. In fact, 2024 marks the 20th anniversary of SID. What's the purpose of Safer Internet Day? Safer Internet Day brings people "together for a better internet" by encouraging individuals, companies, educators, and policymakers to engage with children and young people on topics surrounding online safety, cyberbullying, and the responsible use of social media. It's all about raising awareness and providing an opportunity for everyone to take a step back and reflect on their own digital behaviour. But more importantly, it's about making the internet a safer place for everyone and teaching people how to mitigate risks on their devices. How do I stay safe on the internet? The internet lets you do lots of cool things. You can shop online, read articles, watch videos, share content with friends on social media — it's almost endless. As we spend so much of our lives online, that’s why it's so important that we take steps to protect ourselves. Because there are people out there who exploit the internet to scam other users and infect their devices with damaging viruses. Here are some top tips to help you stay safe when using the internet: Keep software up to date: Tech like your smartphone will encourage you to update its software every once in a while. That's because these updates will usually include security patches to help protect you against the latest online threats. Use strong and unique passwords: Loads of people use the same, obvious passwords across their online accounts. That’s why you should always create complex and hard-to-guess passwords that only you will know. And you can even use tools like LastPass that’ll securely store your login details and generate secure passwords for you. Turn on two-factor authentication: This adds an extra layer of security to your online accounts by requiring a code in addition to your password. Lots of services now offer this feature, so it's best to use it whenever you can. Don't click on random links and attachments: Only click on links or download attachments from emails or websites that you trust. Posts you might see on social platforms can contain dodgy links too, so always be careful. Use a VPN: A virtual private network (VPN) encrypts your internet traffic to help protect your privacy and security online. Consider using a reputable VPN service like NordVPN or ExpressVPN when using public Wi-Fi networks or accessing sensitive information. How do I keep my child safe when using the internet? Like it or not, we live in an increasingly digital world. So, it's important for kids to have access to the internet so that they can socialise with friends and find useful info that'll help them with their homework. But unfortunately, the web is full of sites that you’ll want to stop your child from seeing. As well as the useful tips above, you can also use other specialist tools that'll help to protect them from dangerous content online: Use parental control apps Third-party parental control apps let you monitor the sites your child visits and the apps they use on their smartphone. Here are a few of the best: Norton Family Norton Family lets you can see what your kids search for and the videos they watch, as well as monitor for age-appropriate content. You can also set screen time limits to control how much they use their device and locate their mobile phone with built-in tracking. Qustodio Qustodio is an all-in-one parental control tool that filters out and blocks websites, apps, and games with inappropriate content. And like Norton Family, it also allows you to set time limits. But one of the best things about Qustodio is that it lets you see who your child is calling and texting, and even block specific numbers. Aura Aura is another option that has pretty much everything you need to protect your family from internet baddies. Aside from the parental control app that's really easy to set up, Aura also provides a password manager, antivirus software, a VPN, and much more — including Dark Web monitoring, data breach alerts, and cyberbullying notifications. Try iD Mobile's content restricton service If you’re an iD Mobile customer, you'll be pleased to know that we offer a content restriction service that helps you to protect your child from viewing inappropriate content online. Here’s how to set it up: Log in to the iD Mobile app if you’re using a phone or tablet, or log in to the my account area on a browser instead. Select the 'Services' option. Toggle adult content filtering 'On' or 'Off'. Restrict in-app purchases Lots of apps and mobile phone games will try to entice users with in-app purchases. And if your child's not careful or aware of how much these sneaky in-app purchases can cost, then it could end up setting you back a few hundred pounds. Here's how to stop any accidental spending: On iPhone Open the Settings app and tap on 'Screen Time'. If you haven't already, set up Screen Time and create a passcode. Tap on 'Content & Privacy Restrictions'. If it's not already enabled, toggle the switch to turn it on. Tap on 'iTunes & App Store Purchases'. Select 'In-App Purchases' and toggle the switch to turn it off. On Android Phones Open the Google Play Store app. Open the menu and select 'Settings'. Scroll down to 'User controls' and choose 'Parental controls'. Tap the toggle switch to turn on parental controls. Create a PIN code to use for controlling in-app purchases. Once enabled, you can adjust the settings to control what content is accessible and what can be purchased. Bar the use of Premium Rate Services Premium Rate Services (otherwise known as 'phone-paid services') are goods and services you can buy using things like a mobile phone. This can include competitions, mobile games, charity donations, and more. You can restrict access to Premium Rate Services with help from iD Mobile. Our 'Premium' services option can be accessed from your iD Mobile account or the iD Mobile app, which lets you bar all use of future premium calls, SMS and MMS services. Do you have any other great tips for protecting yourself online? Please share them in the comments section below.

The best tech from CES 2024.Blog
Cool new stuff from the world’s biggest electronics show. CES 2024 came, saw and conquered in Las Vegas earlier this month (9th to 12th January). It’s the world’s biggest Consumer Electronics Show, and we got to see amazing new tech from the biggest brands – along with fun and quirky stuff from the smaller tech companies. Here’s a rundown of the most exciting and innovative tech we saw at the show. Samsung’s transparent and glare-free TVs Samsung revealed its 2024 TV lineup, featuring the world's first transparent Micro-LED display. The jaw-dropping demo at the show showcased everything from dazzling fireworks to vibrant paint splashes on the transparent screen. We’re also going to see some Samsung TVs with glare-free technology, which is another feature that really impressed up close. The screen has a matte finish that absorbs light, rather than reflecting it - so nothing detracts from the bright and vibrant OLED display. The latest Neo QLED 8K, Neo QLED 4K, OLED were also on display at the show, and these TVs will be using advanced AI to improve motion (great for sports), depth, and the dialogue in your favourite movies. LG TVs go big on AI LG arguably stole the show at CES 2024 with the world's first wireless transparent OLED TV, a colossal 77-inch display that showed off a mesmerising 3D-like depth when in transparency mode. Hold the remote, press a button, and unveil what's behind the screen – seriously cool! Other OLED TVs in the new LG range will be using AI to sharpen objects, refine colours, and produce virtual surround sound for a more lifelike viewing experience than ever before. HP unveils new Spectre and Omen gaming laptops HP was out to impress with its spectacular new Omen and Spectre laptops. The Omen Transcend 14 sounds like an absolute game changer for gaming on the go - HP says it’s the lightest 14” gaming laptop ever made, weighing in at a mere 1.6 kg. The Spectre laptops, loaded with AI tech, bring dynamic refresh rates and automatic background blur for a gaming experience smoother than ever before. Asus redesigns its ROG Zephyrus G14 and G16 gaming laptops Asus has improved a couple of its most popular gaming laptops – the ROG Zephyrus G14 and G16. These are going to be the first laptops to feature OLED displays, and the slimmer new aluminium body really looks the part too. Samsung’s new wireless controller Samsung has announced a nifty new wireless controller in partnership with PDP. It’s called the ‘Replay Midnight Blue’ and is the first ever ‘Designed for Samsung Gaming Hub’ piece of tech. It features a home button to instantly launch the Samsung Gaming Hub, and lasts for 40 hours on a single charge. That’s a lot of gaming. MSI Claw A1M – snappy handheld gaming MSI debuts the Claw A1M console, powered by an Intel Meteor Lake processor. This is really specials, as most other handheld consoles use an AMD chip instead. The new Claw will have a 7-inch Full HD IPS display and 120Hz refresh rate for smoother and more responsive gameplay, and we can’t wait to get our hands on it! Razer’s ‘Project Esther’ gaming cushion Razer is looking after our bottom line with its new ‘Project Esther’ gaming cushion. It attaches to your office or gaming chair and uses 16 haptic pads to create physical feedback that matches your in-game audio. Get ready to feel the rumble of a passing tank – this is literally edge-of-your-seat gaming. LG launches new Gram Pro laptops LG has added a couple of sleek and lightweight Gram laptops to its lineup. These Pro models come in 16-inch or 17-inch sized displays, with upgraded OLED panels that now allow touch input. Oh, and the revamped stylus now recharges magnetically when attached to these ultra-sleek laptops. Clever stuff. LG’s new washer dryer with AI smarts The new LG WashCombo™ All-in-One washer dryer has built-in sensors that use AI tech to detect fabric texture, soil level and load size. It then automatically selects the right wash and dry motions, and the best temperatures for spotless laundry every time. Cocktails at the touch of a button Forget shaking mixers and measuring out spirits, Bartesian's cocktail-mixing appliance removes the guesswork from bartending. The Premier edition holds up to four types of spirits, offers 60 recipes available at the touch of a screen. Just drop a cocktail capsule in the machine, and in seconds enjoy a premium cocktail over ice. Cheers to that! Paws for thought Doggy tech company PawPort has come up with a smart door that only opens when it detects the sensor on your faithful pet’s collar approaching. It also comes with an app that lets you track your dog’s whereabouts, and you can even set curfew times – just in case your dog’s too much of a party animal at night-time. Ballys’s back! Bally first made an appearance as a tennis-ball sized robot waaaay back in CES 2020. That’s a long time in the tech world. Now Bally’s back and bigger, with a built-in projector and lots more brains. Bally can now follow you (or your pets) around the home to make sure everything’s okay, and it’ll even greet you with a welcome message as you walk in the door. Did you read about any more cool stuff at CES 2024? What are you most excited about seeing in real life? Could your home do with a Bally to look after it? New Year, New You: 5 tips to make the most of 2024.Blog
As we step into 2024, it's time once again to reflect on the year ahead. What are your aspirations for this year? Which new skills are you excited to learn? How will you carve out time for what truly matters? These are common questions with no one-size-fits-all answers. However, if you've set ambitious resolutions, one key ingredient you'll need is motivation. This January let's shake things up. Instead of rehashing the usual top resolutions, we're offering some fresh New Year inspiration to jumpstart your journey to bigger achievements. 1. Prioritise your health. Remember the adage: health is wealth. And we're not just talking about signing up for a gym membership; it's about nurturing both your physical and mental well-being. Your goals for 2024 may vary, but the energy to pursue them often springs from a healthy state of mind and body. Dedicate daily time for activities that clear your mind and reduce stress. This could be yoga, meditation, a morning run, or a gym session. The secret to consistency? Enjoy the process. Cook and savour the healthy meals you love. Choose activities that thrill you over monotonous treadmill sessions. The hardest part is starting, but once you establish a routine, self-care becomes incredibly fulfilling and equips you to tackle any challenges on your path. 2. Manage your finances wisely. Financial health is a perennial goal. Achieving financial stability doesn't have to be daunting. There are simple steps you can take to stay on top of your expenses, grow your savings, and allocate funds for your dreams. Today's money management apps are more sophisticated than ever. Consider this: how often do our purchases total a round number? Rarely. Modern banking apps can round up each payment to the nearest dollar, funnelling the extra into a savings pot for your big plans, be it a dream vacation or reducing monthly bills. Besides apps, setting a budget is a proactive step towards financial wellness. You don't need a complete lifestyle overhaul to stretch your dollar further. For more tips, check out our 2024 Guide to Saving Money. 3. Make plans to realise your dreams. What's that long-held dream you've yet to chase? 2024 could be the year to turn it into reality. Whether it's writing a novel, mastering a new language, learning an instrument, or excelling in a sport, the possibilities are endless. Break down your big dream into smaller, manageable goals to make it achievable and satisfying. Need help tracking your progress? Apps like Strides on the App Store are excellent for setting and monitoring goals in various ways, including milestone markers to keep you motivated. 4. Make time for your loved ones. Balancing work and home life can be challenging, but it's crucial to stay connected with family and friends. These relationships enrich our lives far more than work or digital entertainment. Regularly check in with your loved ones through calls, texts, or in-person visits. Plan activities together, both offline and online. Share a meal, join a fitness class, or enjoy a theatre show. For long-distance relationships, tools like Teleparty can sync your movie-watching experiences. The key is to spend quality time doing what you love with those you cherish. 5. Unplug from Your Devices It might seem counter-intuitive coming from a phone network, but there are times when disconnecting is beneficial. Whether it's to focus on sleep, creative projects, or simply enjoying life's moments, stepping away from screens can be refreshing. Both iPhone and Android devices offer digital wellbeing features to assist you. iPhone users can set up downtime under Settings > Screen Time, while Android users can explore focus mode and bedtime mode under Settings > Digital Wellbeing. These tools help you manage screen time and improve your overall digital health. As we embrace 2024, let these ideas inspire you to make the most of the year ahead. Remember, the journey is as important as the destination. Taking breaks from screens and prioritising our mental and physical well-being can lead to increased productivity and happiness in our daily lives. By utilising the digital wellbeing features on our smartphones, we can take control of our screen time and create a healthier balance between technology and real-life experiences. Let's make 2024 a year of self-care and personal growth where we prioritise our well-being and make the most of every moment. Giveaway time - CLOSED. New Year, New You: 5 tips to make the most of 2023.Blog
It’s that time again – New Year! And like loads of people, you’re probably doing some deep thinking about the year ahead. How are you going to make this year your year? What new skills are you eager to learn? How will you set time aside to focus on the things that really matter? We all ask ourselves these questions – and there’s no right answer. The answers are as varied as we are! But if you’ve made some serious resolutions, the one thing you’ll need to achieve them is motivation. So this January, we thought we’d do something a little different. Instead of counting down the most popular resolutions (that’s so last year), we’ve put together some great New Year inspo that might be a springboard to even bigger things. 1.Focus on your health You know the saying: health is wealth. But we’re not just talking about that January gym subscription – we mean feeling good physically AND mentally. Whatever your specific goals are for 2023, the drive to achieve them often starts when you’re in a good place. Set some time aside each day to do something that clears your mind and relieves stress. We’re talking yoga, meditation, heading out for a jog or yes, lifting in the gym. The trick to sticking to it? Make your routine enjoyable. Find healthy recipes you love to cook and eat. Do activities that excite you instead of going autopilot on the treadmill. The first step is always the toughest, but once you’re in a routine, self-care can be extremely rewarding. And it means you’re better placed to overcome any challenges on the road to your goals. 2.Look after your finances This is one that should be on every list, every year. Getting a handle on your financial security doesn’t have to be a chore. There are plenty of easy steps you can take to make sure you’re always on top of expenses, building savings and setting money aside to do the things you’ve always wanted. You can even get help from your phone in the form of nifty money management apps. Think about it – how often do we make a purchase that totals up to a whole number? Not often at all. There are banking apps that can round up every payment you make to the nearest pound, putting that extra cash in a special pot to fund whatever big plans you have in mind – Hawaiian cruise, anyone? Or if you want something a little more functional, you can create a pot to whittle down those monthly bills with every transaction. And of course, aside from apps, setting a budget in advance is a great way to get a financial head start. You don’t need to completely overhaul your lifestyle to make your money go further. Check out our guide for more money-saving inspiration. The iD Mobile Guide to Saving Money in 2022 3.Make plans to achieve your aspirations Think about what you really want to do. A dream you’ve always had in the back of your mind but never quite got around to. What’s holding you back from making it a reality? 2023 could be the year it finally happens… Who knows - you might have an idea for a brilliant novel, the skills to fluently speak another language, the determination to learn a new instrument or the talent to become great at a new sport. The possibilities are endless, and having a plan to make them happen just makes your aspirations that much more realistic. Want to make it easier? Break that big aspiration down into smaller goals and milestones. Those little ‘job well done’ moments are what will make it sustainable and rewarding. If it’s the data you need to help you get closer to that goal, there are apps out there that can help. Check out Strides on the App Store. It’s one of the best apps for setting goals, and you can track them in four different ways. Plus, you can even plot in milestones to keep you feeling motivated. 4.Make time for family and friends Between work and home life, it can often feel like there just aren’t enough hours in the day to keep in regular touch with loved ones. But it’s the people closest to us that enrich our lives the most – not work, and not evening Netflix binges (we’re all guilty). Take the time to check in with your friends and family. Call, text, WhatsApp, FaceTime – or even go old school and pop over to say hi. Make plans to do things together, whether it’s in person or virtually. Go out to eat, join a gym together or take a trip to the theatre. If they’re long distance, download a Chrome extension like Teleparty to watch your favourite Netflix series together. Whatever you do, just take the time to do what you love with the people you love. 5.Disconnect from your phone We know – this probably isn’t the kind of resolution you’d expect to hear from us! After all, we are a phone network. However, there are times when you simply want to disconnect from the world and get the most out of whatever you’re doing; be it sleeping, writing an assignment or watching that big season finale. And we don’t just mean putting your phone down – take a break from social media if you feel like you could do with some time away. Both iPhones and Androids have great digital wellbeing features to help you power down when you need to. If you have an iPhone, set up Downtime to give you a break whenever you want to put your phone down for a little while. Just head to Settings > Screen Time > Downtime. You can set a schedule to take a break at the same time each day, or even customise what days you want to set your phone aside and for how long. With Android’s digital wellbeing settings, there are two options. You can block any distracting apps, pings and notifications in Focus Mode. Or, if you want to improve the quality of your sleep, set up Bedtime Mode to silence your phone and change the screen to black and white at set times. Simply head to Settings > Digital Wellbeing to get started. Giveaway time! - Closed This month we’re giving one lucky winner the chance to celebrate the New Year with a choice of FITBIT Charger 5 or £100 Currys gift voucher. To be in with a chance to win we want you to tell us whether you are making a new years resolution and, for those that are, what it is. Entries close at 23:59 on 19th January 2023, and we'll announce the lucky iD community winner shortly after. We’ll notify the winner by direct message here on the Community, so please keep an eye on your inbox. Good Luck!
