Win a Garmin watch with our top hiking app tips.Blog
With the sun shining, there’s no better time to head out into nature and explore the UK's breathtaking trails. But there’s no need to stuff your backpack with massive OS (Ordnance Survey) maps. The most powerful navigation tool you own is already in your pocket! Forget the old-school maps and pricey GPS devices. Today’s smartphones, with the right apps, can be your guide, safety net, and personal trainer all rolled into one. We’ve rounded up the essential apps that turn your phone into the ultimate hiking companion. Plus, to help you get kitted out for your next trek, we're giving one lucky reader the chance to win a Garmin Venu 3s! Whether you're strolling through the Yorkshire Dales or summiting in Snowdonia, your trusty mobile will help you uncover new routes, stay safe, and track every step. Your guide to navigation apps. Different apps shine in different areas. Here’s our breakdown of the best navigation tools for UK walkers: OS Maps: This one’s the gold standard. It taps into the official, highly detailed Ordnance Survey maps trusted by hikers for generations. If precision and reliability are non-negotiable for you, OS Maps is your go-to. But if you’re going for a stroll around the local common, it’s probably overkill. AllTrails: Think of it as social media meets hiking. With thousands of user-submitted trails, reviews and photos, it’s perfect for discovering walks nearby - including hidden gems you won’t find on a printed map. When it comes to finding great walking routes, you can’t beat local knowledge! Komoot: Planning something longer or more adventurous? Komoot offers turn-by-turn voice navigation, making it feel like a sat-nav for footpaths. It’s brilliant for hikes, bike rides or weekend treks into the unknown. The most important app for your safety: What3Words. If you take one safety app with you, make it What3Words . This ingenious tool divides the world into tiny 3-metre squares and gives each one a unique three-word address. If you ever get lost, injured or stuck in a remote spot, you can use the app to share your location with emergency services - down to the exact metre. Fast, simple, potentially lifesaving. The Golden Rule: Always download offline maps. You can’t rely on mobile signal in the hills, valleys and remote paths of the UK. That’s why downloading your maps before you go is absolutely essential. That way, you’ll always have some means of finding your way if your mobile signal gives up on you. Apps like OS Maps , AllTrails , and Komoot let you save your route directly to your device. Offline access not only gives you peace of mind, but it's also a smart move for your mobile plan. It saves your data and extends your battery life by avoiding the constant search for a signal. Track your trek with a smartwatch. Want to know how far you've walked, how high you've climbed or even how many calories you’ve burned? Pairing your phone with a fitness tracker can turn an everyday walk into a full-on wellness activity. Wearables like the Apple Watch, Samsung Galaxy Watch or Fitbit sync with hiking apps and give you real-time updates on distance, elevation gain, heart rate and steps. Looking for a great deal on wearables? Check out the latest smartwatches at Currys. Giveaway time! With a few key apps - like OS Maps for navigation, What3Words for safety and the golden rule of downloading offline maps - your phone becomes the only gadget you’ll need for a successful day out on the trail. So go on: download the apps, choose your route and set off on your next adventure. Happy trails! o enter our Garmin Venu 3s giveaway, let us know in the comments below: What's your favourite hike or walk? We'd love to see your adventures, so feel free to share your photos! The competition closes on Monday, 18th August 2025 at 23:59. The winner will be picked at random, so keep an eye on your inbox or DMs for a message from us. Happy trails!

Your ultimate guide to streaming sport this summer!Blog
Sports fans are in for a treat this summer. It’s jam-packed with huge tournaments, races and more – and to celebrate, we're giving you the chance to win a HISENSE 55E6NTUK 55" Smart 4K Ultra HD HDR LED TV! If you don’t want to miss a second of the non-stop action, we’re here to help. We’ll show you how to stream all the unmissable moments live on your iPhone or Android. And we’ll explain how to get your phone plan prepped, whether you’re watching at home or cheering from the sidelines abroad. Just follow this handy guide to catch every goal, match point and chequered flag without any nasty surprises on your mobile bill, and find out how to enter our incredible giveaway. Let’s get going… First things first: Get your data plan match fit. Streaming sport can use up a big chunk of your data. Meaning it’s a good idea to check your plan before kick-off to see how much data you’ve got to play with. Watching in standard definition can use up to 1GB per hour, while high definition will triple that, gobbling up a whopping 3GB or so every 60 minutes. If the football goes to extra time and pens, it’s safe to say you’ll be using a lot. So, if you’re planning on watching every single second, now’s the perfect time to think about upgrading. With a new plan, you might even be able to get more data for your money! Watching in the UK: Wimbledon & British GP. Most sport nowadays is locked behind a paywall. You don’t need an expensive subscription here though. You can catch two of the UK’s biggest sporting events for free on your phone… Wimbledon (June 30 – July 13) – Arguably the biggest grand slam in the tennis calendar, Wimbledon is always ace. And it’ll serve up some big hitting matchups, with world number one Jannik Sinner looking to bounce back from his final defeat at the French Open. But if Carlos Alcaraz – last year’s winner – has anything to say about it, we could be in for another titanic battle for the trophy. You can stream matches from each round live on BBC iPlayer. British Grand Prix (July 4 – July 6) – Hamilton’s switch to Ferrari hasn’t exactly gone to plan so far. With zero wins, and zero finishes on the podium, Lewis has a lot to do to climb the standings. Could home advantage at Silverstone help him take the top spot? Find out and watch the race live on the All 4 app. Roaming in Europe: Tour de France & Belgian GP. Jetting off to Europe? You can use your phone just like you do at home (in certain countries) with iD Mobile’s Roam Free service . You’ll have pretty much the same amount of minutes, texts and data from your regular plan (up to a 30GB fair usage limit), all available at no extra cost. Result. Tour de France (July 5 – July 27) – The world’s most gruelling cycle race pedals onto screens at the start of July. And you can see every sprint and lightning-fast descent on Eurosport and Discovery+. We’re just glad it’s not us doing those punishing hill climbs. Belgian Grand Prix (July 25 – July 27) – More motorsport. Yes please! The F1 hops over the channel with a trip to the Spa-Francorchamps circuit – the longest track on the current race calendar. To see all 44 laps, you’ll need a Sky Sports subscription (also accessible via Sky Go), or a NOW TV pass. Cheering on the Lionesses at the Euros? If you’ve been lucky enough to bag tickets to the footie over in Switzerland, we make it easy to stay connected. The land of skiing and top choc is one of our ‘ Roam Beyond ’ destinations. What’s that then? Well, depending on how long it takes for England to be crowned champions (or get knocked out in devastating fashion), you can buy a one day, five day, or ten day data add-on. Just make sure to sort this before you start using your data over there. Otherwise, you could be in for a big ol’ bill. Women’s Euros (July 2 – July 27) – Can Sarina Wiegman’s side make it back-to-back Euros titles? With a tough looking group (France and the Netherlands are no push overs) it’s not going to be an easy one. And with a serious turnover in the squad – we miss you already, Mary Earps – the team isn’t as experienced as it once was. You’ll be able to catch each match over on BBC iPlayer and ITVX. From managing your data at home to understanding roaming in France, Belgium and Switzerland, you should now be all set to stream this epic summer of sport. Before you head off though, double check your plan (can you upgrade?) and roaming options in the iD Mobile app . Giveaway time! Got a favourite team you'll be cheering on this summer? Whether you're following the football, dreaming of a Wimbledon win, or have your eyes glued to the Tour de France, we want to know who you're supporting! Tell us who you are supporting this summer in sport in the comments below for a chance to win a HISENSE 55E6NTUK 55" Smart 4K Ultra HD HDR LED TV—perfect for watching all the action in stunning detail. The winner will be picked at random, so keep an eye on your inbox or DMs for a message from us. But hurry—the competition closes on 21st July at 23:59!

Samsung just dropped three new phones and one is a big surprise.Blog
Samsung has just dropped its latest lineup of foldable phones — their slimmest and lightest models to date. They’re packing even smarter camera tech and Galaxy AI too, helping you create cool content and tick tasks off faster. Read our recap to find out more about the brand-new Galaxy Z Fold7 and Z Flip7. Plus, a surprising budget-friendly model… Galaxy Z Fold 7: productivity powerhouse. The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 is a phone and tablet rolled into one. Folded, it works just like a regular smartphone. But when you open it up, you're greeted to a huge screen. Perfect for multitasking with different apps, watching films, and playing games on the go. Here are some of the new model’s standout features: Ultra-thin and lightweight design: The Z Fold7 is only 8.9 mm when folded and 4.2 mm unfolded. It weighs just 215 grams too, making it even lighter than the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra. That’s pretty amazing considering that the cover and main screens are wider this time around. Speaking of… 8-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X main display: The Z Fold7 boasts the biggest screen ever seen on a Galaxy phone. It’s 11% larger than the previous gen’s foldout display, so there’s extra room to run apps side by side. And combined with the new One UI 8, the bumped-up screen offers more intuitive ways to use AI with less jumping between apps. Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy processor: Samsung’s latest flagship foldable runs on their most powerful chip for Galaxy devices. It’s tuned to make AI tasks like real-time translation and Generative Edit even faster and smoother. Ultra 200MP camera: With the same camera system as the S25 Ultra, the Z Fold7 gives you incredible detail in every shot. It also uses AI to automatically boost lighting and realism, so your photos and videos look vibrant and ready to share. Galaxy Z Flip 7: small but mighty. The Galaxy Z Flip7 is a full-sized smartphone that folds to easily fit in your pocket. It’s compact and stylish without sacrificing flagship features. These are some of our fave things about their latest flip: Bigger and brighter FlexWindow: An upgraded 4.1-inch cover screen lets you do more without even opening the phone. Reply to messages, check your calendar — it’s all right there at a glance. Plus, Galaxy AI and Google Gemini have been optimised to work on the new FlexWindow. So, you can get extra AI assistance even when the phone’s closed. AI-enhanced cameras: A dual rear cam setup with 50MP Wide and 12MP Ultra-Wide lenses mean you can take crisp, vivid shots in any light. Capture sweeping landscapes or flawless selfies straight from the cover screen. And for hands-free videos, just unfold the Flip7 and prop it up to use Flex Mode. Long-lasting 4,300 mAh battery: The Flip7 packs the biggest battery ever in a Galaxy Z Flip phone, giving you up to 31 hours of video playback on a single charge. That means more time streaming, scrolling, and snapping without scrambling for your charger. Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE: the budget-friendly surprise. It's a huge deal when Samsung brings out one new phone, let alone three. Unveiled at their Galaxy Unpacked July 2025 event, it’s the Galaxy Z Flip7 FE that’s been stealing most of the headlines. That’s because it’s Samsung’s most affordable foldable yet. That doesn’t mean compromising on features though. It’s got the same sharp AMOLED screen tech of the Flip7, plus Samsung’s latest Galaxy AI features. Now Brief provides helpful updates (including weather, calendar events, and commute alerts) on the cover screen. And it’ll even give you music and video suggestions based on your interests. The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip7 FE also has the powerful 50MP FlexCam found in the Flip7. So, if you love creating content, you can easily capture hands-free selfies and videos in Flex Mode. Upgrade now! Whether you’re wowed by the screen space of the Z Fold7, the style of the Z Flip7, or the value of the Z Flip7 FE — Samsung’s new foldables have something for everyone. If you fancy upgrading to one now, check them out right here on the iD Mobile website. Which of Samsung’s latest smartphones would you choose? Let us know in the comments below!

The savvy traveller’s guide to staying connected in the UK.Blog
You don’t have to hop on a plane for a great holiday. The UK’s full of top spots for a weekend away or a full-on minibreak. But wherever you are, you probably want to stay connected. Otherwise, how are you meant to share those stunning snaps on the Gram? Well, with our handy guide, you won’t be offline for long… Connecting to train and coach Wi-Fi. Just because you’re on a train or a coach, it doesn’t mean you can’t keep up with the group chat. Most have a special Wi-Fi service onboard that’ll let you use your phone as normal. Getting online isn’t difficult either… Check for free Wi-Fi services – Open up your Wi-Fi settings and look for the network name (SSID) that’s specific to the transport you’re on – e.g. Southwest Rail Wi-Fi. Tap on it, and you’ll be asked for your email address. Enter that and you should be ready to browse, message and more. Stay safe on public Wi-Fi – Always check the network is secured. If you’re unsure, ask a member of staff before you decide to hit connect. And rule number one – never access any details that are sensitive, like your banking info, passwords, or your email account while you’re connected. It’s better to be safe than sorry. 4G on the London underground. The tube is the easiest (and fastest) way to get around the capital. But you’re underground, so surely your connection is going to be pretty spotty? Wrong. Through iD Mobile, you get full 4G functionality. Here’s how to use it safely and effectively… Make sure you’ve got a iD Mobile SIM – If you want to use 4G on the tube, make sure you’ve got a iD Mobile SIM card. Turn off auto-connect – Just like with train and coach Wi-Fi, turn off the auto-connect feature to stop your phone from joining insecure networks without your say so. Avoid sensitive info – Don’t access any important info like bank accounts or your email on public networks. It’s better to wait until you’re back home and on your own Wi-Fi for that. Use a VPN – For an extra layer of security, you can always download a VPN. It’ll encrypt your data and protect it from prying eyes. Stay alert – Keep an eye on who’s around you. The tube can get packed – especially during rush hour – and shoulder surfers might be watching your screen. Hotspotting: share your connection . Hotspotting is a handy feature that lets you share your 4G/5G connection with others. And it’s great if you need to get online with your laptop or tablet too. Follow these steps and you’ll be good to go… Enable hotspotting – On your mobile, go to your settings and switch on your personal hotspot. If you want to, you can add a password for some added protection. Connect other devices – On the device you want to connect, select your phone’s Wi-Fi network and enter the password. Save battery – Hotspotting can drain your battery quickly, so keep a power bank handy. Manage data usage – Don’t go overboard with your data – especially if you’re on a limited plan. You can usually monitor your data usage in your phone’s settings. Wi-Fi calling: stay connected in poor signal areas. Wi-Fi calling is a lifesaver when you’re in an area with spotty coverage. Setting it up and using it is simple too… Check phone compatibility – If you’ve got a modern smartphone, it should support Wi-Fi calling. But it’s always good to double check. Enable Wi-Fi calling – Head to your settings, find Wi-Fi calling and turn it on. You might have to type in your phone number for verification. Connect to Wi-Fi – Make sure you’re connected to a Wi-Fi network. This could be at a coffee shop, a hotel, or pretty much any place with a reliable connection. Make calls – Now you can make and receive calls as usual, but they’ll use the Wi-Fi network instead of your cellular signal. General device safety tips. Keeping your phone safe is just as important as staying connected… Turn off Bluetooth and Wi-Fi when you’re not using it – It doesn’t just save the battery. It’ll lower the risk of any unauthorized access too. Activate find my phone – Switch on features like Find my Phone to track down your device if it’s lost or stolen. You can set this up in your phone’s settings. Use a case and screen protector – A simple, but a good one. A solid, sturdy case and screen protector can save you a lot of trouble – and a big repair bill! Got any tips we haven’t mentioned? Tell us all about them in the comments down below!

Skip the airport queues with these amazing UK getaways.Blog
You don’t have to leave the country to enjoy a great holiday. In fact, some of the best escapes can be found right here in the UK. A staycation gives you the chance to explore somewhere new, take a break from the everyday, and relax. All without the hassle of airports or long travel times. Staycations come in all shapes and sizes. From beach breaks to woodland walks, there’s something for everyone — solo travellers, couples, families, nature-lovers, or festivalgoers. Here are a few ideas to get you started, plus some handy apps to help you plan (and enjoy) your perfect UK getaway. Coastal getaways. When the sun’s out, the UK’s coastline really comes into its own. With almost 100 Blue Flag beaches across the country, there’s no shortage of clean, safe, and beautiful spots to enjoy. Cornwall – A classic destination for sandy beaches, surf spots and charming coastal villages like St Ives and Padstow. Wales – The Pembrokeshire coast is a standout, with beaches like Barafundle Bay and Whitesands offering fantastic scenery and walking trails. Norfolk – Head to Wells-next-the-Sea or Holkham for wide open sands, dunes and peaceful walks. The Jurassic Coast – Stretching from East Devon to Dorset, this UNESCO World Heritage site has impressive cliffs, fossil hunting, and stunning beaches like Durdle Door. Top tip: Early mornings or late afternoons are great for avoiding the busiest times — and catching the best light for photos. Handy staycation apps. Once you’ve arrived and settled into your staycation spot, it’s great to have a few apps on hand to help you make the most of your downtime. Here are three free apps worth downloading before you go: GeoGuessr iOS & Android – Free with optional in-app purchases A fun, interactive game where you guess where in the world you are based on Street View images. There’s also a UK mode, so you can test your knowledge of local landmarks during quiet evenings or rainy afternoons. BBC Sounds iOS & Android – Free A great app for streaming podcasts, music mixes, audiobooks and radio shows. It’s perfect for beach days, car journeys or winding down at your accommodation. National Trust App iOS & Android – Free Useful for finding interesting places to explore nearby, from historic houses to nature reserves and coastline walks. It also includes opening times and visitor information. Festivals for all tastes. Live music, food, comedy, arts — the UK has a festival for just about every interest. You can go all in with camping, or just pop in for a day or two. Here are some of the biggest and best, now that Glastonbury’s done and dusted: All Points East (London) Dates: 22–25 August 2025 (TBC) Held in Victoria Park, this multi-day event blends big-name music acts with local community activities. Reading and Leeds Festivals Dates: 22–24 August 2025 Two iconic festivals held simultaneously over the August Bank Holiday weekend. Expect a mix of rock, indie, rap and more. Creamfields (Cheshire) Dates: 21–24 August 2025 One of the biggest dance music festivals in the world, with multiple stages and top-name DJs. Camp Bestival (Dorset & Shropshire editions) Dates: Shropshire: 17–20 July 2025, Dorset: 31 July–3 August 2025 Designed with families in mind — lots of music, funfair rides, crafts, wellness activities and entertainment for kids. Edinburgh Festival Fringe Dates: 1–25 August 2025 A city-wide celebration of theatre, comedy, dance and more. It’s the world’s largest arts festival and a great excuse to visit Edinburgh in the summer. Festival-friendly apps. AccuWeather iOS & Android – Free Knowing if rain’s on the way can make a big difference at a festival. AccuWeather offers local forecasts and alerts. Shazam iOS & Android – Free Heard a great song but missed the name? Use Shazam to identify tracks in a few seconds and save them to your playlist. Official festival apps Some major festivals have their own apps. They often include site maps, set times, artist info and real-time updates. Reading & Leeds app / Latitude app Camping and glamping. Getting close to nature doesn’t have to mean roughing it (unless you want to). Camping and glamping offer different ways to enjoy the great outdoors, depending on your style. What’s the difference? Camping – Usually involves pitching a tent and bringing your own gear. It’s basic, but budget-friendly and fun for those who enjoy a more traditional outdoor experience. Glamping – A step up in comfort. You can stay in pre-setup accommodation like treehouses, cabins, yurts or bell tents — often with proper beds, heating and even hot tubs! Popular locations The Lake District – Ideal for lakeside camping, hill walks, and picturesque views. Snowdonia – Great for more adventurous types, with mountain hikes and remote sites. South Downs – Easy to reach from London and perfect for countryside escapes. Isle of Skye – A bit of a journey but a beautiful, rugged landscape that’s well worth the trip. Helpful camping apps Pitchup iOS & Android – Free Lets you search and book camping, glamping and caravan sites across the UK with filters for facilities and location. What3Words iOS & Android – Free This app gives every location a unique three-word address. It’s great for finding a specific spot or meeting point, especially in remote areas. Park4Night iOS & Android – Free Designed for motorhome and campervan users, but useful for anyone looking for quiet places to stay overnight. Walking holidays and hiking routes. For a more relaxed (or active) escape, a walking holiday can be a great way to unwind. The UK has plenty of well-marked paths through stunning landscapes: South west coast path – 630 miles of coastal views through Somerset, Cornwall and Dorset. Hadrian’s wall path – Historic trails and countryside stretching across the north of England. Peak district – A mix of open moorland, limestone valleys and picturesque villages. There are loads of walking apps out there to help you find the right route. Three worth checking out are Komoot, AllTrails, and Footpath – an app where you can plan routes by drawing on the map. Go for it… A great holiday doesn’t always require a plane ticket, as there’s so much to see and do right here in the UK. Staycations offer you flexibility, variety, and the chance to rediscover what’s on your doorstep. Got a go-to UK holiday spot you’d recommend? Share your tips with fellow Community members in the comments below. We’d love to hear your ideas!

The super-fast way to delete thousands of old photos.Blog
You’re on the beach, the sun is setting, and you’re just about to capture that perfect vista. Then BAM. You pull out your phone, but instead of the camera, you get the dreaded ‘Storage Full’ notification. Annoying, right? We’ve all been there. The biggest culprit is usually your photo gallery. If it’s anything like ours, it’s probably clogged up with thousands of screenshots, duplicate photos and out of focus images. Luckily though, there’s loads of quick ways to get back those precious gigabytes. We’ll show you exactly how to clean up your gallery, make space for new memories, and get your phone back to top speeds! Let’s dive in… Start with the tools you already have. Before you download any new apps, check out the free clean-up tools that are hidden away in your phone’s photo app. They’ll help you find and delete duplicates, blurry pics and old screenshots. And they make the whole process super straightforward. For iPhone users: The Apple Photos app has a nifty feature called the ‘Duplicates’ album. Can’t find it? It’s tucked away under ‘Utilities’. It’ll automatically find and group identical (or very similar) snaps, making it nice and easy to merge duplicates and keep only the best quality version. This is how to find it… Open the Photos app. Tap on the ‘Albums’ tab. Scroll down to the ‘Utilities’ section and press ‘Duplicates’. Look over the groups of duplicate photos. Tap on ‘Merge’ to keep the best version and delete the rest. For Android users: Google Photos also has a handy ‘Manage storage’ section that’s great for decluttering your gallery. In here, you’ll get clever ‘Clean up’ suggestions, which highlight large videos, naff photos and the like that you probably don’t need anymore. Here’s how to use it… Open the Google Photos app. Tap on the ‘More’ tab (the three horizontal lines). Select ‘Manage storage’. Press ‘Clean up’ to see the suggestions. Review and delete the photos and videos you don’t want. Make cleaning fun with ‘swipe to delete apps’. At the end of the day, it’s admin. But cleaning out your photo gallery doesn’t have to be a massive chore. With swipe to delete apps, you can turn the task into a way more interactive experience. Think of it like a dating app, but for your pics. Instead of swiping left and right on potential matches, you’re swiping to keep or delete photos. For iOS users: Slider makes managing your photos simple. Its clean interface lets you whizz through your camera roll and sort your faves from the fails. Here’s how to get started… Download Slider from the App Store. Open the app and give it access to your photos. Start swiping! If you like the pic, swipe right. Hate it? Swipe left. The app also picks out any duplicate images and rubbish photos. And you won’t have to dig through your gallery to find them yourself. For Android users: Sponge is the Android equivalent of Slider, and it’s just as satisfying. With its speedy swiping mechanic, you can tidy up your gallery in no time. Check out this quick guide… Download Sponge from the Google Play Store. Fire up the app and let it access your photos. Swipe through your gallery. Swipe right to keep a photo or left to get rid of it. Sponge will also pick out duplicates and low-quality images, helping you make quick decisions. Enjoy your newfound freedom! Once you’ve given your phone a bit of a spring clean, you should notice a big difference in its performance. You won’t just have more space for new apps, playlists and pics. Hopefully, your phone will run a lot faster and smoother too. That means apps will load in a flash, letting you multitask and swap between them without stuttering. Throw in improved battery life – a chocka photo gallery slows things right down and uses more juice – and it’s a win-win situation. Remember though… Just to be on the safe side, it’s smart to back up your photos before you delete anything. After all, you might remove one by accident. And if you do, it could be gone for good. You can use cloud storage services like iCloud, Google Photos or Dropbox to store a copy of all your pictures and videos. Give these tips a try and share your results with us in the comments down below. Got any little hacks we’ve missed? Tell us about those too!

Find Your Balance: Navigating Screen Time in a Digital World.Blog
Finding a healthy balance with our screen time is increasingly vital for our mental well-being, especially as highlighted during Mental Health Awareness Week in May. While our smartphones offer incredible connectivity, excessive use can contribute to stress and anxiety. At iD Mobile, we understand this delicate balance and importance of having an intentional relationship with technology. Our flexible plans and data management tools are designed to empower you to take control. Some of the ways you can make use of this are: Choose a plan that fits your lifestyle (and screen time goals): With iD Mobile's Pay As You Go plans , you're not stuck with a set amount of data. You can choose a different bundle every month, so if you want to cut back on your online time, you can enforce this by picking a smaller data package. See exactly where your data is going: The iD Mobile app shows you how much data you're using and which apps are using the most. This helps you understand where your online time is spent, especially on things that eat up a lot of data like videos and social media. Get alerts when you're using too much: You can set up warnings in the iD Mobile app to tell you when you're getting close to your data limit. This can be a helpful nudge to think about whether you really need to keep scrolling! Set a limit on your spending: You can put a cap on how much you spend on your iD Mobile bill. Knowing there's a financial limit can make you think twice about using a lot of data on things that increase your screen time, like going down a rabbit hole of YouTube videos! Finally, if you're struggling with your mental health, we offer 20% off your first month of online therapy with BetterHelp, through our iD Perks platform.

Your iPhone is getting a visual makeover that makes it more personal. The new "Liquid Glass" design creates a cool, translucent effect on icons and widgets, giving your display a dynamic and modern look. You’ll have more customisation options for the Lock Screen and Home Screen, allowing you to tailor your device to your unique style. The Camera app has also been made sleeker, letting you slide your finger to open up all the different camera modes - like panorama shots and portrait mode. Lost the remote again? Your smartphone can save the day!Blog
So, you’re settled on the couch after a long day, ready to binge your favourite show or dive into a gaming session. Then you discover the shocking news - the remote is missing! Or worse, your controller dies mid-match. It’s a small frustration, but so annoying. What if you could save things by using something that’s already right in your hand? Like… your smartphone. Your smartphone - yes, the same one you use to scroll social media and send texts - can double as a powerful controller. From gaming to streaming to smart home management, your phone might be the only remote you’ll ever need. Here’s how easy it is to make the most of it. Level up your gaming: use your phone as a controller. Gaming is more mobile than ever. If you’ve ever dreamed of playing your PS5 or Xbox games from different rooms in your home (or even while traveling) your phone makes it possible. There’s no need to hog the family TV or be tied to the living room anymore. For PlayStation players. Got a PS4 or PS5? The PS Remote Play app is a game-changer (no pun intended) that lets you stream your console games straight to your phone over Wi-Fi. Once the app is installed, just sign in with your PlayStation Network account and you’re in. You’ll even get virtual buttons and joysticks on your screen, so you don’t need a physical controller to play. For Xbox fans. Xbox offers a similar experience through the Xbox app. With it, you can stream games from your console to your phone and even manage game downloads, view achievements, and chat with friends. It’s perfect for quick gaming sessions when the main TV is in use or when you’re away from home. For a console-like experience. On-screen controls are fine, but if you’re after something more tactile, there are awesome mobile accessories like the Razer Kishi or GameSir controllers. These devices snap onto your phone and provide physical buttons, thumbsticks, and triggers - basically turning your phone into a Nintendo Switch-like handheld. They’re perfect for longer gaming sessions or more competitive play. The only remote you’ll ever need. Your phone’s utility doesn’t stop at gaming. It can also replace a whole drawer full of remotes. TVs, streaming devices, sound systems and lots more can often be controlled right from your smartphone. Smart TVs Most modern TVs come with their own companion apps. If you’ve got a Samsung, download SmartThings. For LG TVs, grab the LG ThinQ app. These apps let you adjust the volume, change inputs, launch apps like Netflix, and even type in search bars with your phone’s keyboard (way faster than hunting and pecking with a remote). This is especially useful when your physical remote is lost, broken, or just mysteriously missing batteries (again). Streaming devices Devices like Roku, Amazon Fire TV, and Google Chromecast all have free apps that turn your phone into a full-featured remote. Want to pause, rewind, or search by voice? No problem. In fact, these apps often offer more intuitive navigation than the original remotes! You can even use your phone to launch apps, cast videos, or mirror your screen for presentations or family photos—turning your living room into a mini theater. Beyond entertainment: smart home control. Your smartphone doesn’t just control games and shows—it can also manage your entire smart home. If you’ve ever thought about making your living space more tech-friendly, your phone is the perfect hub to start with. Lights, thermostats and more Apps like Google Home, Apple Home, and Amazon Alexa allow you to control compatible smart lights, thermostats, cameras, doorbells, and more—all from one place. For example: Dim the lights without getting up. Adjust the thermostat without leaving the couch. Check your video doorbell when someone rings. Start the coffee maker before you get out of bed. Appliances and extras Even appliances like washing machines, refrigerators, robot vacuums, and air purifiers now have companion apps. Want to start a wash cycle from work? Or get a notification when your fridge door’s left open? You can do that. As smart home tech becomes more common, your phone becomes the ultimate command centre. You’ll be able to control dozens of devices across different rooms or even when you’re away. Final thoughts - the remote that's always with you. Your smartphone is much more than just a communication device. Whether you’re deep into gaming, browsing your favourite shows, or dimming the lights for movie night, it has your back. The best part? You already own it. No need to buy an expensive universal remote or worry about replacing dead batteries in five different controllers. So why not give it a try? Head to your app store and search for your console, smart TV brand, or smart home device. Download the companion app and start exploring all the things your phone can control. It’s easier than you think - and lots of fun too. Already using your phone as a controller? Share your favourite apps or tips in the comments! We'd love to hear how you’re making tech work smarter for you.

What the new EU phone labels actually mean for your wallet.Blog
Ever wondered how long your new phone will really last? Or how easy it might be to get it fixed? From 20th June 2025, getting the answers to these questions is about to get a whole lot easier. New, standardised energy labels are being rolled out for all new smartphones and tablets sold in the EU and right here in the UK. Think of them like the stickers you see on your telly or washing machine, but packed with even more useful info. This is all part of a bigger plan to cut down on waste, make devices last longer, and help you make genuinely sustainable choices. Here at iD Mobile, we want to make sure you’re in the know. So, let’s break down what these new labels mean for you. What’s the big idea? The European Union has brought in these new regulations to help us all make more informed and sustainable choices when buying new tech. The aim is to give you a clearer picture of a device's energy efficiency, how long its battery should last, how tough it is, and how easily it can be repaired. It’s all about promoting transparency from manufacturers and helping to reduce electronic waste – a big win for both your wallet and the planet! What’s on the label? This isn't just a sticker about energy use – it's a clear, at-a-glance summary of what really counts. You'll find it on the box in-store and on the product page online. It features a series of simple ratings: Energy Efficiency Class (A-G): The familiar A-G scale tells you how much power the device uses. 'A' is the most efficient, which is great for your bills and the planet. Battery Life Per Charge: This gives you a standardised estimate of how many hours a full battery will power your device, making it easier to compare different models fairly. Battery Cycle Rating: This crucial number tells you how many full charge and discharge cycles the battery can handle before its capacity drops below 80%. The minimum is 800 cycles, but a higher number means a longer-lasting battery. Drop-Resistance Class (A-E): We've all had that heart-in-mouth moment. This score (from 'A' for most rugged to 'E' for least) gives you an idea of how well the device can handle accidental tumbles. Repairability Score (A-E): A real game-changer. This score tells you how easy it is to get the device repaired. The higher the grade, the simpler and likely cheaper it will be to fix if something goes wrong. Ingress Protection (IP) Rating: You may have seen this before. The IP rating indicates how resistant the device is to dust and water. There will also be a QR code on the label that links to the EU’s EPREL database, where you can dig into even more detail if you fancy. More than just a label. Alongside these handy labels, the EU has also introduced new ‘ecodesign’ rules for manufacturers. These are designed to make sure devices last longer and are easier to repair. These rules mean that: Manufacturers must make critical spare parts, like batteries and screens, available for at least seven years after a model is no longer sold. You’ll be guaranteed to receive software updates for at least five years, keeping your device secure and up-to-date for longer. Professional repairers will have fair access to the necessary software and firmware to carry out repairs. What does this mean for you? These new rules put the power back in your hands. You can now compare phones and tablets not just on camera specs or screen size, but on their long-term value and environmental footprint. So, when you're browsing for your next phone, take a moment to read the label. Look for high grades in battery life, repairability, and drop resistance. A good repair score often means less cost and hassle if a part breaks, while strong durability ratings mean your device can better withstand the bumps and scrapes of daily life.

Simple tricks for taking incredible concert shots on any phone.Blog
Got tickets to see your favourite band or artist? We bet you can’t wait to catch them in action and rock your friends’ social feeds with some epic shots. But gigs aren’t the easiest places to snap photos on your phone. As when the lights go down, it can make pics look blurry and blown out. So, we’ve put together this guide that’ll help you take amazing concert photos you’ll actually want to share. Plus, we’ve highlighted some of the best phones for capturing awesome live music moments — from the front row all the way to the back! Quick tips for any smartphone. No matter what phone you have, there are a few simple tricks which can make a big difference right away: Control the lights: Don’t just point and shoot. Tap your screen to focus on the artist and slide your finger down to lower the exposure. This will make sure those bright stage lights don’t turn your musical hero into a glowing blob. Avoid digital zoom: It can be tempting to zoom in when you’re nowhere near the stage. But this often makes things grainy, so it’s better to just take a wide shot that you can crop later. Got a phone with a proper optical telephoto lens? It should keep things looking sharp even when zoomed in. Use burst mode: If your phone has a burst mode, turn it on and hold down the camera button to take lots of pics in quick succession. It’s great for capturing unexpected, high-energy moments and gives you more choice to find that one perfect shot. Capture the atmosphere: It’s cool getting close-ups of the artist you’re seeing. But try to take photos that capture the energy of the concert too. Have the crowd in the foreground and get some of the stage setup in there. Keep your phone stable: To stop stage lights from looking streaky and ruining your good work, you’ll want to minimise camera shake as much as possible. That’s why you should use both hands when taking your shots, even if they’re portrait pics. Clean your phone’s lens: This is an obvious one. But pocket lint and greasy fingerprints (gigs get pretty sweaty, after all) can add a murky filter you definitely don’t want. Just give the lens a quick wipe on your t-shirt or hoodie before you start shooting. Upgrade your view: the best phones for concerts. Many of today’s smartphones have pro-grade cameras. They’re literally like having a DSLR that fits in your pocket. So, if you’re a serious gig-goer with an old, sub-par phone — you should think about upgrading to something that’ll make your shots shine. Here are a few of our faves: iPhone 16 Pro: Apple’s latest and greatest phone has a 5x optical zoom telephoto lens, which lets you get closer to the action without losing detail. And with its Camera Control button, you can slide your finger to quickly toggle through lenses and make other on-the-fly adjustments. You’ll never miss a big moment! Google Pixel 9: The Pixel uses the power of Ai to not only keep images looking sharp, but to help you edit too. Someone’s hand in the way of an otherwise perfect shot? There’s a tool that can make it disappear like magic. Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra: If you usually go for seats at the back, this mighty mobile’s 100x space zoom ensures crystal-clear pics from super far away. It’s packing plenty of Ai smarts too, which boost low-light performance and reduce noise so your snaps look vibrant and crisp. The big debate: capture the moment or live in it? A sea of smartphones is a common sight at most gigs. And it can be pretty annoying when someone in front blocks your view with their device’s screen. But with the cost of gig tickets these days, it’s also understandable why you’d want to capture and relive a show you’ve paid so much to see. Here’s a look from each side: Living in the moment: It’s not often that we get a break from screens. So, for some people, gigs are an opportunity to get away from their tech and feel fully present without any distractions. Capturing the memory: On the other hand, memories fade with time. And today’s smartphones make it so easy to record a quick video of your favourite song or snap a pic you can share on Insta. Find a balance: Or, you could just take a few stunning photos (using our tips) during the first couple of songs. Then, put your phone away and enjoy the rest of the show. Rock on! We hope our guide helps you capture some really cool pics at your next gig. Who have you got tickets to see this summer? Let us know in the comments below! And if you’ve got some extra photography tips we missed, we’d love to hear about them too…

So grab a slice of cake (virtual or real, completely up to you), and let’s take a fun trip down memory lane The early days (2015–2017). What a month May 2015 was. iD Mobile was launched by Carphone Warehouse, with a big idea: to shake things up with a mobile service that put value, flexibility, and transparency first. We knew there was a better way to do mobile, and we were determined to prove it! Fast forward to June 2017, and we were already making waves with inclusive roaming in 50 destinations , more than any other UK network at the time, meaning no more nasty surprises when you checked your bill after a holiday. And in July that same year , we went for the treble. We combined our Data Rollover , Bill Capping , and Roaming features into one great value plan. So… your unused data didn’t go to waste, you could avoid overspending, and you could use your plan abroad. That’s the kind of smart thinking we’re all about. Growing smarter (2018–2019). As we grew, we got even savvier. In February 2018, we introduced Wi-Fi Calling , a total game-changer for anyone living in a signal black spot. Suddenly, staying connected from your kitchen, basement, or anywhere with Wi-Fi was no problem at all. The very next month, we launched the iD Community , our friendly online hub where customers can get help, share advice, and connect with each other 24/7. And where you can read articles just like this one! Then came a biggie: in June 2019, we reached 1 million subscribers! That’s a lot of smart mobile users. And every single one of you helped us get there. Speed, stars & smart features (2021–2023). Things really picked up pace over the past few years. In April 2021, we rolled out the UK’s fastest 5G , powered by our partner network, Three. That meant super-smooth streaming, lightning-fast gaming, and stress-free video calls — no more buffering, no more lag. And our customers were loving it! By February 2023, we were feeling the love with four-star ratings on both Google Reviews and Trustpilot. Your feedback has been a massive part of our success, and we’re so grateful for all the support you’ve shown. A big year for innovation (2024). This past year has been one of our biggest yet. In March 2024, we gave our app a glow-up. The new iD Mobile app got a fresh new look — now quicker and easier to use than ever. With the updated app, you can track how much data you’ve got left, manage multiple plans under one account (a brand-new feature!), and stay in control of your bills by capping extra charges and checking your usage at a glance. It’s everything you need to manage your plan, right at your fingertips. If you haven’t explored it yet, you can learn more or download it here . Then in April 2024, we launched our eSIM . That means less plastic, faster setup, and more flexibility for everyone. It’s one small change with a big impact — and it’s only the beginning. And the cherry on top? In October 2024, we officially hit 2 million subscribers . That’s right — double the love, double the community, double the iD power. We’re growing faster than ever, and we’re not slowing down! How we’re celebrating! Of course, an anniversary like this calls for some very special celebrations, and we’ve got plenty lined up for you. To start, we’re thrilled to introduce iD Perks — our brand-new rewards platform packed with epic discounts, offers, and savings from some of the biggest names around. It’s our way of saying thanks for sticking with us, and the best part? It’s available to all iD customers at no extra cost. You can explore iD Perks right in the iD Mobile app , making it easy to discover new deals wherever you are. So go on, perk up today! But that’s not all. To make sure you’re getting even more value when you buy an additional plan or upgrade, we’re offering up to 10x the data on selected phone plans and up to 2x the data on SIM-only plans. Yep, you read that right — we’re supercharging your data allowances on new deals and upgrades, so you can get even more out of your mobile experience. Here’s to the next 10 years… From the very beginning, iD Mobile has been built on value, simplicity, and innovation — but the heart of it all has always been you. Our loyal customers, curious newcomers, and Community champions have shaped the past ten years into something truly special. As we look ahead, we’re more excited than ever about what’s to come. Expect even smarter solutions, better experiences, and more ways to stay connected with confidence. Thanks for being part of the journey, here’s to the next ten years of great value! And don’t forget to can check out all our anniversary offers and start enjoying your iD Perks today.

How to boost your mood and win big this World Laughter Day!Blog
Laughter is honestly the best medicine. After all, it’s a simple way to boost your mood and is proven to be a powerful stress reliever. Don’t just take our word for it either. An article by the British Heart Foundation explains how laughing helps release endorphins – otherwise known as feel-good hormones. Just a few minutes of mirth can increase the oxygen you take in, lower your heart rate and blood pressure, and help your muscles relax. You can’t argue with that. And now there’s even more reason to smile… To celebrate World Laughter Day (on May 4, 2025), we’re giving away a pair of Sony WH-1000XM5 Wireless Bluetooth Noise-Cancelling Headphones! Whether you’re giggling at your favourite podcast, chuckling over a video call, or just enjoying the peace and quiet between laughs, these headphones are perfect for turning up the joy. So, if it’s a quick grin or a full-on belly laugh you’re after, here are a few ideas that are bound to give you a giggle – and don’t forget to enter the giveaway while you’re at it! Video calling friends & family. This one’s probably the simplest on our list. But it’s arguably the best too. Catching up on a video call with friends and family can always lead to unexpected, spontaneous laughs. Especially when you’re sharing stories and humorous situations from the last few weeks that they might have missed. Grandad’s always fancied himself as a bit of a comedian. And those corny jokes of his always get a groan or two… You can always try using fun filters as well. Give yourself a funny hat. Make yourself look absolutely ancient. Change the background so you’re on the moon. The options are almost endless now. Most phones (and apps) have at least a few kooky effects you can play about with while you chat. And they’ll definitely make your convo a lot livelier and more enjoyable. So, download FaceTime or Zoom and see what they’ve got to offer. TikTok & Instagram reels. Platforms like Insta and TikTok are absolutely stuffed with funny content. From viral challenges to creative skits, there’s always something there that’ll have you howling. If you fancy it (and don’t mind embarrassing yourself a bit), you could always get involved with a few trending challenges yourself. And if your sitcom skills are on point, you can also make your own sketches and share them with the community or the group chat. Who knows, maybe you’ll go viral yourself. Need some more ideas? Dance challenges are all the rage, especially on TikTok. Pop on your favourite playlist and get your groove on. It doesn’t matter if you move like your uncle after a few drinks at a wedding either. At the end of the day, it’s all about having fun and putting a smile on your – and everyone else’s – face. Make sure to tag your mates and get them involved as well. The more people that take part, the more laughter there’ll be. YouTube & podcasts. Podcasts and YouTube videos are full of moments that’ll have you in stitches. There are countless comedy channels and stand-up routines out there that can brighten your day. And they’re not just from established comedians that you’ve seen loads on the telly. Dig a little deeper and you’ll find shows and clips from brilliant up and comers that’ll be selling out the O2 before you know it. Found a few favourites? You could create a playlist of the best funny vids you’ve found so far. Then when you need a quick pick me up, you’ve got them all in one place, ready to go. Or you could always subscribe to a few comedy pods on your go-to streaming platform. There’s absolutely loads to choose from. Queue one up for your morning commute, and it’ll make that grey Monday morning a lot less gloomy. If you’re anything like us, you’ll probably be sat there struggling to keep a straight face. Laughter’s contagious though – so it might not be the worst thing to cheer up the rest of the carriage! Remember, a laugh a day keeps the stress away. And it doesn’t cost a thing either. So, whether it’s a video call with the folks, a silly TikTok challenge, or a hilarious podcast, there’s loads of ways to bring more laughter into your life. And remember, that goes for every day of the week too. Not just World Laughter Day! Giveaway time! Got a favourite joke, podcast or video that always makes you grin? Tell us about it in the comments down below for a chance to win a pair of Sony WH-1000XM5 Wireless Bluetooth Noise-Cancelling Headphones! The winner will be picked at random, so keep an eye on your inbox or DMs for a message from us. But hurry – the competition closes on 16th May at 23:59!

How to nail the blurred background aesthetic with your phone.Blog
Want to take more wow-worthy photos? Whether you’re jetting off on holiday soon or you just love capturing nature at home, blurring the background of your pics adds a professional touch. It’s a simple effect that helps viewers focus on the subject. And you don’t need a fancy DSLR to achieve it either. That’s because many of today’s smartphones now have cutting-edge cameras which can easily create that “bokeh” look. There are even some clever editing apps which use the power of Ai to do it! Follow our steps below, and you’ll be well on your way to capturing stunning photos that none of your social followers will scroll past. Turn on ‘portrait’ mode. Most phones these days have some kind of ‘portrait’ camera setting. It simulates the shallow depth of field you can achieve on pro cameras, which blurs the background and brings out your subject more. Whether it’s your cute pet or a pretty flower in bloom. Here’s how to find and make the most of your phone’s portrait mode: iPhone: Open the camera app, swipe across to ‘Portrait’, and frame your subject. Your iPhone will tell you to move further away if you’re too close, and it even has different lighting filters you can play around with. Once you’re happy, just tap the big round button on your screen to take your photo. Android: It’s a similar deal if you’ve got a Samsung, Google, or any other Android phone. Head to the camera app and switch to ‘Portrait’ mode to get that cool blurred background look when you shoot. Some Android phones also offer pointers and let you adjust the intensity of the blur. Tip: No matter what kind of smartphone you’re snapping photos on, always make sure your subject is well lit and not too close to the background. Use editing tools to adjust the blur after. Background too blurry? No problem. After you’ve taken a photo using portrait mode, you can easily tweak the strength of the blur effect with your iPhone or Android’s built-in editing tools: iPhone: Open your portrait mode pic in the Photos app and tap the edit icon at the bottom to adjust the depth. Slide left to sharpen the background, or right to increase the blur. Android: Go to Google Photos (or the Gallery app on Samsung devices) and select the snap you want to adjust. Tap ‘Edit’ and look for an option called ‘Portrait Blur’, ‘Depth’, or ‘Background Effects’. Then use the slider control to change the background focus. Download a background blur app. If you want to blur the background of an existing photo that wasn’t taken using portrait mode, there are some great editing apps that can give it the blurred background treatment: Focos (iOS/Android): This app allows you to manually apply or enhance blur. It features an AI engine that calculates the depth of field for a more natural look. Picsart (iOS/Android): A popular do-it-all photo editor that includes a handy blur tool. Just select the background of your photo to defocus it and get that bokeh effect. AfterFocus (iOS): Download this app to create a DSLR-style blurred background photo by simply choosing a focus area. Tips for the best bokeh shots. We’ve taught you how to use your phone’s portrait mode and edit pics after with tools and apps. But if you really want your snaps to shine, try some of these photography tips: Step back and zoom in: Take a step back and zoom in a bit to boost the bokeh effect. It helps to compress the background, so the blur is more pronounced. Use natural light: Make the most of natural light, especially during “golden hour” (the time just after sunrise and before sunset). It’ll make your subject really pop. A simple background’s (usually) better: Shoot against a clean, uncluttered background free of busy or distracting objects if you want your subject to stand out more. But experiment, as night pics with lights behind can look incredible! Adjust exposure: If you can manually adjust your phone camera’s exposure, try underexposing a little to enhance the background (if you want the bokeh more visible). Get creative with angles: Take pics from a low angle to make your subject look extra prominent, or from a high angle to capture a unique perspective. Use the rule of thirds: This is classic composition technique. Imagine your frame’s divided by three-by-three grid lines, then place your subject at one of the intersection points and take your photo. It’s another way of making your work look more professional. Don’t over-edit: Editing tools enhance your photos nicely. But don’t get carried away, as over-editing can cause them to look fake and unnatural. It’s always best to do subtle tweaks. There you have it. You can create eye-catching blurred background photos without needing a big and expensive camera. Just use your smartphone’s portrait mode, editing tools, and a few free apps whenever inspiration strikes. Don’t forget about those extra tips too… Share your results! If our guide’s got you practicing bokeh-style photos, we’d love to see your work in the comments down below.

Simple beach hacks to keep your phone safe and sound.Blog
Heading to the beach sometime soon? If it’s a sunny day we can’t blame you! A beach day should be about fun, not fretting over your phone. But between sand, water, heat, and crowds, it’s one of the riskiest places for your phone - whether it’s an accidental drop or a sneaky theft. Luckily, we’ve got you covered. This guide share some top tips to keep your phone safe, so you can relax, take selfies, and make memories without mishaps. Use a waterproof case to keep it dry and safe. Water and electronics? They’re basically frenemies. The quickest way to ruin your beach vibes is with a soaked or sand-crusted phone. Here’s the good news. You can easily guard your device with a waterproof case or sealed pouch. Brands like Spigen and Gear4 are famous for a reason — they offer full protection from water, dust, and drops. And as a bonus, a lot of cases still let you use your touchscreen - so you can snap your beach pics without opening the pouch. Even if your phone’s got a water-resistance rating, that doesn’t mean it’s swim-proof. So try not to use your it too close to the water. Better still, take a break from your screen and simply enjoy the waves – which leads us nicely onto our next point… Secure your phone when you’re not using it. Leaving your phone on your towel or sun lounger might seem harmless… until it disappears. Thieves love an easy target, and an unattended phone is just that. At the very least, you should stash it in a zipped pocket deep inside your beach bag. Or wrap it in a t-shirt and bury it under your things. Out of sight, out of mind! Oh, and we know someone who swears by wrapping their phone in a nappy (unused, thankfully). Their theory is that a thief is unlikely to open it up and investigate what’s inside! If you’re hitting the waves or taking a long beach walk, ask a friend to keep an eye on your stuff or use a small, portable lockbox. Some beaches even offer lockers for hire, which is worth checking out. Use a PIN and enable phone tracking. Even with all the precautions in the world, stuff happens. That’s why digital security is just as important as physical protection. Always lock your phone with a PIN, fingerprint, or Face ID. It’s your first line of defence if your device ends up in the wrong hands. And don’t forget to activate Find My iPhone (for iOS) or Find My Device (for Android). These tools let you track, lock, or remotely wipe your phone if it goes missing — giving you a fighting chance to recover it, or at least protect your personal data. Pro tip: Back up your phone before heading to the beach. If the worst happens, you won’t lose your contacts, photos, or app data. Use a phone lanyard or secure strap. Keep your phone close, preferably within arm’s reach, so you can keep an eye on it without stressing. A phone lanyard or wrist strap can be a game-changer for beach days. By attaching your phone to your body, you lower the chances of dropping it in the sand or having it snatched when you're not looking. Plus, it’s super handy when you're taking beach selfies or listening to music while strolling by the waves. Look for lanyards with waterproof pouches or those that clip securely to your swimsuit, bag, or belt loop. A little extra dangle now might save you from a big disaster later! Avoid leaving your phone exposed. Sure, your phone loves attention, but it doesn’t love baking in direct sunlight or being a sand magnet. Exposing your device to heat can mess with its battery and performance, not to mention make it too hot to handle (literally). Instead of leaving it face-up on your towel, tuck it into a shaded part of your bag or wrap it in a cloth. You can even use a clean sunglasses case as a mini protective pod. Consider a cheap beach phone. If you're really worried about losing your device, consider taking an older phone or a budget backup instead. Load it with essentials like maps, music, and messaging apps, and leave your shiny flagship model at home. That way, even if disaster strikes, it's not too disastrous. Final words before you head off… A little beach prep goes a long way, and that includes looking out for your phone. From waterproof pouches to secure straps, plus smart digital defences, you can protect your tech while you soak up the sun. So go on, pack the sunscreen, grab your sunnies, and hit the sand with confidence. Your phone will stay safe, your memories will stay saved, and your beach day will stay blissfully stress-free! Over to you. Have you got any phone safety tips of your own? Is our nappy idea a winner? Feel free to share your comments below.

Our favourite free video calling apps for staying in touch with friends and family.Blog
Whether you’re at home or on the go, it’s now easier than ever to stay in touch with mates, mum and dad or your work colleagues. It’s not just regular calls or texts now either. Video calling’s given every single natter a far more personal touch. It sort of feels like they’re sat right there with you. What are the best apps for video calls though? Well, we’ve put together some of our favourites that are worth a download on your phone, tablet or laptop. Let’s dive in… WhatsApp. You’ve almost definitely heard of WhatsApp. But if not, here’s a quick intro. It’s one of the most popular messaging apps in the whole world. And with over 2 billion users, there’s a very good chance your family and friends are already using it. One of its biggest plus points is its end-to-end encrypted texts and calls. What does that mean though? Well, it keeps all of your chats private and secure. So, no prying eyes can see or hear what you’re talking about. And because of its simple, easy to navigate interface, almost anyone can use it. Yep, even your nan! The app also supports group video calls, making it perfect for a chinwag with multiple mates or family members. Just grab a brew, settle in on the sofa and catch up on all the latest goss. Download WhatsApp here Discord. If you’re a big gamer, you might have come across this one already. You can talk in real time with other gamers and create a party chat with your mates. It’s ideal for when you want to link up for a spot of quick questing in that epic RPG. Discord supports screen sharing too. And that’s super handy, especially when you’re struggling on a section of a game and need a bit of help from one of your squad. They’ll be able to give you a few pointers. And you’ll finally be able to get past that tricky boss battle. Download Discord here Facebook Messenger. While Facebook might not be as popular with the young’uns as it once was, Messenger is still going steady. It’s built right into Facebook, so if you’ve already got an account, you’ll be good to go from the start. No admin required here. Oh, and because all of your mates and family are already on your friends list, it’s quick and easy to connect. Like most of the others on our list, it caters to one-on-one and group video calls. But it also comes with some pretty fun features like filters and effects. So, if you’re after a good laugh, why not give yourself a funny hat, or make yourself look absolutely ancient. It’s almost guaranteed to lighten the mood. Download Messenger here Zoom. Zoom saw a massive surge in popularity during the Covid pandemic. And with Skype soon shutting down for good, it’s now the top dog when it comes to video calls – especially in a work setting. It offers high-quality video and audio, and it can easily handle huge group calls. So, it’s just as good for big business meetings or a family reunion. When you’re working from home, or have family spread out all over the globe, it’s a great shout. The app also comes with screen sharing (which is good for remote collabs), virtual backgrounds (for a bit of extra fun) and the ability to record calls. And that’s seriously useful for saving memories or remembering some vital job info. Plus, you won’t have to take loads of notes either. Result! Download Zoom here Google Meet. Now one for the Android users. Google Meet was designed to be as simple as possible. And if you’re a big user of Google’s other apps, it’s integrated with most of them too, making everything you do nice and easy. Good video and audio quality is pretty much a given with most of our apps here. And Meet is no different. Where it is different though, is in its nifty Knock Knock feature. When someone rings you, you’ll be able to see a video preview of them, letting you spot quickly who’s calling. Don’t fancy chatting right now? You don’t have to answer. But you might just see their sad face! FaceTime. FaceTime is Apple’s own video calling app. And sorry Android fans, this one’s exclusive to Apple devices. You won’t have to spend ages scrabbling around in the App Store trying to find it though. When you get an iPhone, iPad or a MacBook etc, it’ll be downloaded for you already. Just look for the white camera logo on a green background to fire it up. It’s really that straightforward. Got a favourite video calling app we haven’t mentioned? Tell us all about it in the comments down below!

The festival phone guide you didn’t know you needed.Blog
It’s nearly festival season. And while they’re loads of fun, they can also be super chaotic, especially if you’re not prepared. So, we’ve put together some top phone tips and tools to help you get the best from the fest. Must-have phone accessories for festivals. Portable power bank. Festivals aren’t short. You’ll probably be there from Thursday to Sunday at least. And your phone’s battery will really be put to the test. So, packing a high-capacity portable power bank (one that’s at least 10,000mAh) is key. Then, you’ll be able to keep your phone charged all weekend, letting you capture every moment and stay in touch with your mates. After all, it’s easy to lose them in a big crowd! Look for one that’s lightweight and durable. Then you can carry it around without adding too much bulk to your festival bag. Waterproof phone pouch. Muddy fields, spilled drinks and rain are all part of the festival experience. Remember, we do live in the UK. So, you’re almost definitely going to encounter all three. A waterproof phone pouch is a great way to protect your phone from the elements. These nifty little pouches are designed to keep your phone dry (and most importantly, working), even when it’s absolutely chucking it down. They’re transparent too, making it easy to send a text without taking it out and risking a soaking. Make sure to get one that fits your phone snugly and has a secure seal to stop any water from seeping in. Phone lanyard or crossbody holder. Grab a crossbody holder or a phone lanyard to keep your phone safe. Sling it across your chest or around your neck, and it’ll make it way harder for any would-be thieves to try and nick it. And if you fancy a boogie – and plan to dance the night away – there’s less chance it’ll end up in a muddy puddle. Battery life hacks. Enable Low Power Mode or Battery Saver. Turn on Low Power Mode (iPhone) or Battery Saver (Android) as soon as possible. Both will help your phone to use less power, extending the battery life. It makes a big difference when you’re staying onsite for multiple days. Turn off background app refresh, Bluetooth and push notifications. The above are all convenient features, but they’ll drain your battery quickly. Switch them off to save some juice. You can always turn them back on later when you’re leaving the festival. Download maps, tickets and setlists offline. Do this one ahead of time. It’ll save data and battery power. Plus, having your maps and tickets available offline means you can access them without needing a constant internet connection - which is spotty at best at festivals. Keep screen brightness low and use Airplane Mode. Your screen brightness is another serious battery drainer. When you’re not using your phone, slide that brightness all the way down and use Airplane Mode, especially if you don’t need to check any messages. Then you’re guaranteed to have some power left to take a few videos of your favourite artist. Bring a spare cable. Even with a portable power bank, you’ll need a cable to charge your phone. And bring a spare one too, as they’re small and easy to lose. It’ll come in handy if one of your friends ends up in a similar situation as well. Emergency contact prep. Set up emergency contacts. There’s a good chance you might lose your phone. So, set up some emergency contacts on your lock screen, with a short message to go along with them. Anyone who finds your phone can then easily text or call your contact(s) and return your phone to you. Panic over. Save group numbers as favourites. It’s worth saving your group’s numbers as favourites for quick calling or texting. Use them when you get split up, and you’ll be reunited in no time. Agree on a central meeting point. Ahead of the big headline set, agree on a specific meeting point for your group and write it down somewhere – just in case you and your pals get separated. This might be a specific stage, a burger van, or a landmark that’s easy to spot from most parts of the festival. Then, if you do lose each other in the mosh pit, it’ll be easy to link up after. What3Words (W3W). Festival sites can be pretty huge, especially if you’re at one like Glastonbury or Reading. So, before you head off, make sure you download the What3Words app. It divides the entire world into 3x3m squares, each with a unique three-word code. This makes it simple to share your precise location with mates when you’re lost among a sprawling sea of tents. And speaking of tents… Once you’ve pitched your tent, take a quick screenshot of its W3W address. That way, you can always find your way back, even if your phone’s battery dies. Share the screenshot in the group chat too - it’ll make organising meetups an absolute breeze. Got any festival tips or tricks we haven’t mentioned? Tell us about them in the comments down below.
