Keep your signal strong Sick of bad reception when you’re on the go? Keep your battery well-charged and avoid electronic devices – as this can affect your signal. Some protective phone cases may also impact your mobile reception if they’re made of signal-blocking materials. To check if your case is blocking your signal, just remove it and see if your connection improves. And don’t forget to try turning your phone off and on again. Yes, that old chestnut really can do the trick. Stay connected when travelling. If you’re traveling by train, you may have the option to access a Wi-Fi connection. And with Apple’s recent announcement of the Vision Pro, this tech is only going to get bigger and better. But what’s the difference between the three? And what kind of cool tech is out there at the moment to try out? We’ve got the full lowdown… Virtual reality Some people will argue that this is the most immersive of the three. VR fully replaces your view – with a headset that goes over your eyes - putting you slap bang in the middle of a computer-generated space. And you can explore and interact with this 3D environment like you’re really there. Video games, live concerts, education, and sport are just some of the sectors taking full advantage of the tech. If you’re gaming, you literally become the character. You’ll see and hear exactly what they do, making the experience way more engaging and hands-on. Sony’s PlayStation VR2 is a good place to start, with loads of different games to get stuck into. Whether it’s a high-octane racer that puts you in the driving seat, or a bone chilling horror. Those jump scares will definitely hit different in VR, that’s for sure! Sports fans get in on the action too. With the Meta Quest 2 you can watch the big match like you’re really there. VR Premier League matches give you a front row seat in Sky’s virtual stadium. Get real time analysis, switch camera angles to catch every shot and tackle, or just enjoy the game with your mates. Augmented reality AR is like something out of a sci-fi movie. Using your phone – or some stylish smart glasses – augmented reality overlays what you can see in real life with computer-generated info. It’s the real world, just with extra digital layers. Pokémon GO – which took the world by storm when it launched (and is still going strong) – is probably the most popular example out there. Different kinds of Pokémon are sat on a map of the area you’re in. Then, when you get to that spot, you use the camera on your phone to see them on your screen in the real world. And all you’ve got to do next is catch them! Easier said than done… Other companies and brands use it for more practical reasons too. Airlines like easyJet have a handy augmented reality tool in their app. Combined with your smartphone camera, you can check whether your hand luggage is small enough to fit under the seat on the plane. Which can definitely save you an awkward moment at the airport later on. Shoe giants Adidas use AR in their app as well. For their classic footwear, you can get an even better look at every detail before you buy. Just point your camera at a flat surface, and you can spin, zoom, and flip the shoe to your hearts content. Exactly like if it was really in front of you in the shop. And it goes even further. Buying trainers can be a drag. But with certain running shoes, you can virtually try them on. Aim your phone at your feet and the augmented models will appear. So, you don’t even have to leave the house! Mixed reality MR is a blend of digital and real-world elements. It takes ideas from augmented reality and virtual reality, mashing them together into one cutting-edge whole. Worn around your eyes, these head-mounted displays are equipped with cameras. And these cameras are constantly mapping the space you’re in, shooting digital assets into physical spots in front of you. Which, as you can imagine, is especially cool for gaming. Characters in the game you’re playing can stroll about the room you’re in, making your gaming sessions really come to life. They’re also used more and more now in the world of work too. Designers, artists, architects, and other creatives sometimes use mixed reality to show off their projects. Thinking about adding an extension to your house? An architect might show you around their vision of the final build with the help of an MR headset. Pretty cool. The recently announced Apple Vision Pro is the biggest step forward for mixed reality so far. You’ll navigate entertainment, apps and docs using just your voice, hands, and eyes. Project your favourite shows onto the wall in front of you. Sit at the kitchen table while you work – no laptop required. Or video call with the family, with everyone from dad to your nan appearing as life-size tiles in your room. You’ll have to wait a little while to get your hands on it though. Google Maps What it’s best for: Casual walks around cities or parks. The chances are that you’re already using this app. It often comes installed on android phones and has a variety of uses – from checking train times to looking for somewhere to eat. But it has some features that are just made for walking. Want to get off the roads when walking around towns or country parks? Pick walking mode and it’ll usually take you down some quiet paths that are a little off the beaten track. For another thing, you can download maps and use them offline. That means that you can go for walks where mobile reception is a bit patchy and, because you still get GPS, you’ll know where you are in relation to your downloaded map. You can also find reviews of nice places to stop on your walk. It’s a great app for a casual walk, but if you’re going for a more serious hike, you might want to try AllTrails. Keep reading! Download the Met Office app for daily and even hourly weather updates. You can search by location and you’ll get alerts if there’s extreme weather on the way. It’s also a great tool for people who suffer from allergies – since you’ll also get pollen alerts too. If you prefer a portable weather forecaster, you can watch Met Office videos giving you UK summaries. And if you’re tackling a mountain, the Met Office provides detailed mountain weather forecasts. There are interactive rainfall maps too, so you can plan your holiday walks the day before. So, you’ll know whether to strap on your walking boots or have a longer lie in. It’s a great feature if you’re hiking cross country. If you’re stuck for inspiration, it’s also packed with suggested walks. You can search by difficulty level, length and even whether it’s dog-friendly or if there are waterfalls on the route. The base app is free, but Pro (£29.99 per year) lets you download maps, unlocks more map details and sends you alerts when you’ve taken a wrong turn. Great for when you can’t find a signpost. Available on: iOS & Android Price: Free with premium features Fitbit App What it’s best for: Monitoring your progress and health on a walk. The Fitbit app can be used to track your route, distance walked, pace and a lot more – all via GPS. You can also use it for daily steps using the motion sensor on your phone. While you don’t need a Fitbit to use the app, it will open up a whole load more features - so you can keep an eye on your heart rate, weight and calories burned. Nobody wants to lug around a folder full of printouts and travel docs - tickets, boarding passes, passport copies, itineraries. It’s just another thing at risk of being forgotten or left behind. Save yourself the hassle and do it all on your phone. Most of us don’t go anywhere without our phones, so you might as well keep everything in one digital place and go paperless. It’s better for trees and it’s easier for you. Everyone wins! Here are some top tips for how to nail your paperless getaway. Tickets and boarding passes It’s a lot harder to leave paperless tickets at home by mistake. Better yet, adding your flight tickets or boarding passes to your phone is really straightforward. It keeps them just one or two taps away, saving you plenty of hassle when checking in. Providing you’re using a participating airline, you can save your ticket to Google Pay as soon as you’ve bought the tickets. Then all you need to do is open the Google Pay app, open your wallet and show the barcode or QR code when you travel. If you’re on a Google Pixel phone, you can actually add a boarding pass just by screenshotting it. Adding tickets to your iPhone or Samsung wallets is equally straightforward. You can either add them directly from the airline’s app or from an email. Apps for lounge access Why not treat yourself when you’re travelling? Go ahead, you’ve earned it. Getting into a lounge before your flight is like starting your holidays even earlier. Leave behind the usual chaos, put your feet up in style and travel like a VIP. The tricky part is knowing how to get in. For Apple users, it’s even easier to access airport lounges. The LoungeBuddy app uses your phone’s location info to display your available lounge options. Some you can pay to enter while others are free when you own a certain credit card. Airline apps Having the app for the airline you’re flying with is another way to make sure things go smoothly – as you get all of your important flight information in one place. It beats sifting through a huge folder of travel documents to find out things like check-in and departure times and gate numbers. Apps will also keep you up-to-date about real-time delays, gate changes and more. If you’re yet to book a trip, airline apps will let you book your flights directly. Even better, they’ll let you filter your searches to find the cheapest flights and help frequent flyers access perks and bonuses too. Paying with your phone Going paperless also means leaving the wallet behind. Your bank card is another thing that you can keep stored on your phone, just like your boarding passes. That means having all your cards in one handy wallet. Just make sure the country you’re visiting supports contactless payments. Most destinations popular with tourists will offer contactless payments, but you should always take a credit card with you in case of emergencies. Also, it’s a good idea to let your bank know that you’re heading overseas – just so you can keep using your card without interruptions. Navigation Exploring is one of the best parts of going on holiday but getting lost when you don’t speak the language can be tricky. It’s always a good idea to have some help with navigation. This list of free navigation apps should come in handy for any trip you’ve got planned. There’s a new kid on the social media block. It looks like Twitter. And it works quite like Twitter too. So, what exactly is Threads and is it about to take the world by storm? Let’s have a quick look… What’s been happening with Twitter/X? I know what you’re thinking - ‘do we really need another social media app?’ Your answer probably depends on how you feel about Twitter. It’s gone through quite a few big changes recently, including an issue with ‘throttling’. This was where you could only view 600 tweets before you’d reached your limit for the day. Then you were stuck refreshing your feed with no new content to show for it. And as you can imagine, that left a lot of people a bit confused and frustrated. And it might go through an even bigger overhaul soon too. After 17 years, Twitter recently announced they’ll be changing their name to X. Yep. Literally just the letter. This rebrand is all part of the plan to turn the platform into the next super-app. What does that actually mean though? Well, not a whole lot – at least for now. No new features have been released just yet. But no doubt they’ll be coming at some point down the line. So, make sure to keep your eyes peeled. Say hello to Threads This is where Mark Zuckerberg comes in. The Facebook founder (technically it’s Meta now) went ahead and launched Threads. It’s a text-based microblog-style app just like Twitter. It has a really ‘early Twitter’ feel to it too. Which has helped it to drum up lots of hype, with huge numbers signing up on the first day alone. And of course, that means some massive new competition. How to get Threads Threads is just like any other app. Whether you’re on iPhone or Android, you just search for it on your app store. Once it’s downloaded, the sign-up process is really easy. If you’re already an Instagram user, it’s as simple as connecting your existing account. And just like that, you’re now on Threads. All your followers and the accounts you follow migrate as well. So, you don’t have to spend any time doing boring social media admin. Nice. Integrating an existing Instagram username is the only way you can sign up though. That means if you don’t have an account, you’ll need to make one to get stuck into Threads. How Threads works Seeing your feed for the first time might result in some serious déjà vu. You can like, repost (not retweet), reply to, or quote a ‘thread’. So basically, all of the things you can do to a tweet. There’s some great news if you’re not a fan of the Twitter character limit. Posts on Threads are capped at 500 characters. That’s nearly double the limit of a tweet. You can also share up to 10 images in a single post, instead of four. Making it way easier to share your albums worth of holiday snaps. The feed isn’t split like it is on Twitter. There’s no ‘following’ and ‘for you’. That means you’ll occasionally see random stuff from accounts you don’t follow. But the feed itself is easy to read. It’s slick and clean, so scrolling through it feels pretty satisfying. You can search for accounts but not specific posts or topics. That also means hashtags aren’t really a thing on Threads. Is it better than X/Twitter? It’s a hard call to make considering both apps are basically the same. A lot of it comes down to your personal experience. With more and more unwanted adverts and tweets appearing on our Twitter feeds lately, it’s refreshing to open an app and be able to clearly see and engage with content you actually want to look at. Samsung’s new foldable is here! Over the last few years, they’ve been paving the way with their unique flipping and folding phones. They combine the best parts of a phone and a tablet – mashing them together into one super handy hybrid. With the Galaxy Z Flip 5, Samsung have really gone all out. There are loads of snazzy new features including a large cover display and a completely redesigned hinge. Sounds good, right? Let’s take a closer look… Larger cover screen The first thing you’ll notice when you look at the phone is the larger cover screen. The previous versions had a small rectangular outer display. This one, called the Flex Window, fills almost the entire front of the phone when it’s shut. And it doesn’t just look the part. It also means you can do a whole lot more without having to unfold it. Now that’s smart. Obviously, there’s all of the stuff you’d expect to see on there - the usual widgets and notifications for weather, time and what not. But it can also run full apps on there. Yes, really. There’s a curated list of apps you can check out that are all optimised for this screen, including YouTube, WhatsApp, and Spotify. It’s got some fun options for customisation too. You can give it a personal touch by changing the colour scheme, adding a video wallpaper, or swapping out the look of the clock face. Plus, it lets you fill it with your favourite widgets – giving you quick and easy access to your go-to bits and bobs. Overhauled hinge The hinge has also seen some big changes. There’s a clever new water-drop design which means the phone now shuts completely flat. So, there’s no longer a gap between the two halves when it’s folded. It’s a satisfying solid block now, which not only looks better, but also makes it slimmer when folded. It fits neatly in your pocket and should stop dust and muck from getting onto the inner display. It uses less moving parts as well, so technically there are less ways it can go wrong. Samsung say this should help it to last longer, with the phone rated for 200,000 folds. That’s a whole lot of folding. So, you won’t have to worry at all about its durability long-term. Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset This is up there as one of the most powerful Android phones you can get at the moment. And that’s all thanks to its internal tune-up with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset. There’s plenty of power inside to make it a perfect daily driver, with more than enough oomph for all your everyday smartphone tasks. FlexCam This makes it easier than ever to get that perfect Insta-ready selfie, whichever camera you use. You don’t even need to open the phone either. There’s a camera shortcut for the Flex Window, so you can snap away while it’s closed. Flex cam lets you use the hinge to your advantage and find the perfect angle. Plus, it’s great for group shots - just stand it up and take hands-free pics that fit everyone in the frame. And if you have the Galaxy Watch6, you can even control the camera remotely while you strike a pose. Durable design It’s well protected against accidental drops, knocks and scrapes. An ultra-tough combination of an Aluminium Armour frame and Gorilla Glass Victus 2 provides plenty of protection. So, put on that chef’s hat and learn how to bake that cake (and enjoy eating it too). 3. Explore local events Whatever your interests, you’ll usually find local events to suit you, or why not try something completely new? From music and comedy gigs to car shows, art exhibitions, or open-air theatre, there are plenty of events to choose from, often free of charge. A great way to find out about local events is by using location services (geotagging) in social media apps like Facebook and Instagram. Geotags allow your social media and even Google to build a profile of where you go and what you like, sending you alerts about local events that might interest you. If you’re not comfortable sharing your location information, there are plenty of apps to help you find out what’s happening in your area. Some of our favorites are Eventbrite, Skiddle, Stubhub, DICE, and TodayTix. 4. Enjoy a solo movie night Let’s get this straight—there’s nothing wrong with going to the cinema alone, and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise! Many people enjoy solo cinema nights—it costs half as much and there’s no debate about which movie to watch. If you’re not keen on heading to the cinema alone, recreate the experience at home. Get some popcorn, open a bottle of wine, and close the curtains. Services like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video ensure you have plenty of movies to choose from. 5. Take a class and learn something new Interested in learning a new language, trying a life drawing class, or even giving line dancing a go? You’ll often find loads of local classes in all sorts of activities—all you have to do is look. Obby.co.uk is a great place to start for fun activities like pottery, dance, or jewelry making. There are lots of reasons why this might happen – from your kid getting carried away on in-app purchases, to accidental issues like being charged for extra data. Luckily, there are lots of things you can do to control your child’s mobile spend, especially if they’re on an iD Mobile plan. Check out our top tips below. How to restrict in-game and in-app purchases We’ve all seen those newspaper articles with titles like ‘My child spent over £1000 on Candy Crush!” Shocking stuff, but luckily, it’s easy to put a stop to unwelcome in-app purchases. We suggest it’s the very the first thing you do on your child’s phone. That way, there’s no danger of them buying things they shouldn’t. No matter how much they’re into their fave game. On Android, you can easily add password protection on the Google Play Store app: Open Google Play, go to Menu > Settings > Require authentication for purchases > For all purchases. Job done! Now your child won’t be able to buy anything without your permission. Here’s how to restrict in-game and in-app purchases on an iPhone: Go to Settings > General > Restrictions. Tap Enable Restrictions > enter a PIN, then choose In-App Purchases in the list of options under the Restrictions tab. How to put a cap on iD Mobile bills If your child has a phone with an iD Mobile SIM, you can use the handy bill capping feature to control their out-of-plan spending. This won’t prevent them making purchases from the app store (the section above does that), but it will stop them (or you, rather) racking up additional charges if they run out of monthly data and keep using their phone on-the-go. To set a cap, go to Cap My Extra Usage Charges on the dashboard of the iD Mobile app. Tap ‘Set a cap now’, and dial the slider up or down to choose a credit limit between £0 and £25. How to install parental filters You don’t want your kids seeing any content that’s unsuitable for them. That’s why we’ve put a content restriction service on the iD Mobile app. Head to Services, toggle on the Adult Content Filtering switch, and the phone will block adult content. Easy. We’re half-way through the year, and we’ve had some amazing phones released so far! Here’s a round-up of some of the best phones released this year. Samsung Galaxy S23 series Samsung launched its new flagship S23 family earlier this year, with three models available - the Galaxy S23, Galaxy S23 Plus and high-end Galaxy S23 Ultra. The entry-level Galaxy S23 packs a lot of power into a compact body, perfect for smaller hands and pockets. The 6.1-inch FHD+ display has an adaptive refresh rate that goes up to 120Hz, so motion is really smooth. It’s super bright too, so you won’t have to squint to read it in bright sunlight. There are three cameras on the back. A 50MP main shooter for pin-sharp portraits, a 12MP ultra-wide camera for sweeping scenery, and a 10MP telephoto zoom lens for picking out distant objects. There’s also a 12MP front facing camera for great looking selfies. The Galaxy S23 Plus takes all the standout features from its little brother above and puts them in a bigger package. The 50MP triple camera system features a high-resolution main lens, ultra-wide lens and a dedicated macro lens for extreme close-ups. Elsewhere on the phone you’ll find a side-mounted fingerprint sensor, 3.5mm headphone jack (a nice feature for anyone still rocking headphones that plug in), and the large 5,000mAh battery is capable of 21 hours of video playback. That’s a serious binging session. The Note 12 Pro 5G is the second phone in the series, with the same display as the Note 12. The main difference is the camera, with the Note 12 Pro 5G using a 50MP Sony IMX766 main sensor. This means you’ll be able to capture more detail, and with optical image stabilisation, your shots will be crisp and blur-free. And finally, there’s the Note 12 Pro Plus 5G. The camera is a major upgrade, with a huge 200MP Samsung ISOCELL HPX main sensor, which has a wider f/1.65 aperture that captures more light – so it’s a great camera for night-time shots. Guess what? It seems that all those foldable phone rumours are finally coming true! Samsung’s head of mobile confirmed this week that it is “time to deliver” foldable smartphones. This news has got us thinking - and here are things we’re hoping to see from a foldable phone in the future. A screen the size of a tablet Rumours of a foldable Samsung phone have been around for years, following patents of a foldable device reported to be named the Galaxy X. The Galaxy X (if it’s actually going to be called that) is expected to feature a tablet-like 7-inch OLED screen that folds in half. The thinking here, is that your phone can double up as a tablet when needed. And that’s great for all sorts of things. You could watch a movie on the train, on a device that folds right back up once you’ve reached your destination. You’ll also be able to play the latest games on a larger screen that really does them justice. Thinner and more portable Samsung first introduced its flexible OLED display way back at CES 2013.The screen was as thin as a piece of card, made from plastic, and bended both ways. Phones are already super-thin, but if we’re to get foldable phones they’ll need to be even thinner. And that means they’ll be more portable, and able to fit into smaller pockets. Perhaps that little pocket on your jeans will finally come in handy. More than one screen to enjoy It’s almost a given that foldable phone screens will be larger than those on your average smartphone, and that’s great. What’s even more exciting is that a foldable Samsung phone could have as many as three screens. In theory you could have one screen on the front for notifications and texts. Then you could have two screens inside that combine to form one large display when you open the device out like a tablet. So you could use that first screen as your primary display (just like a regular phone), and the use the other two if you need more working space, or want to watch movies on a bigger screen. Full-sized multitasking Today’s smartphones are great at multitasking. The only problem is they offer so little screen space for it. A flexible phone, on the other hand, could transform a single screen into two displays - so it’ll feel just like you’ve got an extra phone screen to work on. For example, you could have YouTube on one screen, and Microsoft Word on the other. Whatever helps you get things done. No more cracked screens Any type of flexible or foldable display is likely to be thinner than the one you have on your phone right now. It may not even be made from glass, which means it won’t break even if it’s dropped. We can hear the sighs of relief from here.
