iPhone 15 vs Nothing Phone 2.Blog
Apple’s latest smartphone – the iPhone 15 – is already being challenged by a new kid on the block. The Nothing Phone 2 has been dubbed ‘the iPhone killer’. Sounds kind of dramatic, right? Well, there’s some truth in it. These are two super speedy, powerful phones packed with all the latest mobile tech. Making this a heavyweight phone clash for the ages! So, we’re here to see how the pair stack up against each other. We’ve picked out a few of their biggest advantages to find out what makes them tick. Hopefully our handy comparison will help you to make the right call… iPhone 15 Does Apple’s latest need much of an introduction? The iPhone is one of the most popular handsets for a reason… More battery When it comes to longer battery life, the iPhone 15 takes this one. If you’re away from a plug socket all day – or, god forbid, you left your charger at home – it’ll easily last a full day without needing a top up. So, you can stream your favourite shows, beat your high score, and listen to a load of tunes. But still have plenty of juice leftover too! Improved brightness We love the sun as much as the next guy. But it can be a right pain when you’re trying to see what’s happening on your phone. Luckily the iPhone 15 has a seriously high peak brightness of 1644 nits. Even when the sun’s beaming down on it, everything stays nice and clear. Meaning if you’re sat by the pool on your summer holiday, it won’t get in the way of your eBook or the playlist you’re trying to make. IP68 protection Just dropped your iPhone in the paddling pool? Don’t go off the deep end. Apple have given the iPhone 15 a waterproof body, with an IP68 design that means it can easily survive a quick dip and splashes from the kids. Phew. 4K video on the front camera If you fancy yourself as the next big YouTuber, then the 4K front facing camera will make your vlogs look even better. And if you’re just a regular average Joe, video calls will get the star treatment too. Software support Apple have come out and told us that they’re committed to supporting the iPhone 15 with updates for the long term. That means you’ll get all the latest security improvements and fun features for the foreseeable. And that’s great news, because you won’t feel like you have to upgrade every year just to keep up! Nothing Phone 2 What’s the Nothing Phone 2 got going for it then? Well, definitely not nothing. There’s plenty to like about it… Bigger screen For a start, its screen is a real looker. It’s 0.6 inches bigger than the iPhone 15. So, if you want to make everything you watch or play even more immersive, it’s a great shout. It’ll definitely help to take those long morning commutes to the next level! Higher refresh rate Speaking of gaming, the display is also rocking a 120 Hz refresh rate. That means your gameplay is going to be silky smooth, and your in-game actions will be way more responsive. This can be the difference between victory and defeat in those fast-paced multiplayer arenas, where your reactions need to be lightning fast to win. After all, every millisecond counts. Extra CPU cores Most of us use our phones for pretty much everything nowadays. Texting mates. Sending work emails. Doing a bit of online shopping. And if you’re anything like us, that means you’ve probably got a gazillion different apps and tabs open at once too. The Nothing 2 will make light work of all that though. With extra CPU cores, this thing is a multitasking machine. Zip back and forth between even the chunkiest, power-hungry apps – all without lag. Swap from that facetime call with your nan to the holiday you’re in the middle of booking. Then check the weather over in Spain before your trip, and pop back to finish your conversation. There’ll be no slowdown in sight! Better charging wattage Watts that? Higher wattage charging you say? Nice. The 45W charging function makes the Nothing 2 charge in a flash. So, you don’t have to wait around for ages twiddling your thumbs while your phone’s charging. Letting you spend more time doing the fun stuff. Which of the two phones do you think you’ll pick up? Let us know in the comments down below.

Boost Your Mood This Blue Monday.Blog
January often marks a time of new beginnings and goal-setting for the year ahead. However, it can also bring a sense of melancholy for many. The festive cheer and close family gatherings of the holiday season give way to a quieter, more reflective period. Despite this, there are several ways to infuse your days with positivity. We have some great tips to help brighten your mood. What is Blue Monday? 'Blue Monday' started in 2005 as part of an ad by a travel company. They said they figured out the saddest day of the year using things like weather, how long until the next holiday, and how long since people have been paid. But the expert who helped come up with this idea later said we should think about happy things instead, especially when making new goals. Now, people use Blue Monday as a reminder to take care of themselves. Here are some fun things to try: Get moving. Exercise is a great way to feel good. It doesn't have to be boring; you can ride a bike in the park, go for a run, or play a game like football with friends. This can make you feel better, get you outside, and let you hang out with others. Watch a Happy Movie or TV Show Happy movies or TV shows can lift your spirits. Watching a movie with a good ending or a funny TV show, even if you've seen it before, can make you feel better. Try watching something like “The Pursuit of Happyness”, “The Sound of Music”, "Forrest Gump," or a movie with Adam Sandler. Watch with family or friends for more fun. Go shopping for yourself January is a good time to buy something special for yourself, especially with the sales. Maybe you've been wanting a new laptop, a trip, or cool shoes. Go ahead and treat yourself! Read a Good Book Reading can take your mind off things, which is good for you. Whether you like stories or books that help you learn, there's a book for everyone. Find a quiet place, turn off your phone, and start reading. Talk to family and friends We’re talking about the people that are always rooting for you, no matter what you do or where you are, in your mind and in reality. These are the people that make you feel better just for having chatted. They may be there for Christmas and other festive moments, but they’re also there when you’re feeling blue. Pick up the phone and call them, text them or set some time for a video call. Ask for Help if You Need It Sometimes, feeling sad in January is more serious. It's important to look after your mental health just like your physical health. Talking to friends and family is good, but sometimes you need extra help. Groups like CALM and the Samaritans are there to talk to you. Asking for help is the first step to feeling better. Remember, you're not alone. Blue Monday Giveaway To help boost your mood this Blue Monday, we’re doing an exciting giveaway! This is where the Community comes together and in doing so, the reward just gets better! To enter simply tell us below what makes you happy in life. It could be anything, from family and friends to trips away at the weekend. Once you’ve entered your response, click send! What is Safer Internet Day?Blog
Safer Internet Day is a yearly event that's held on the second day of the second week of February. Now recognised in over 170 countries, SID aims to promote the safe and positive use of the internet — especially among children and young people. In this article, we're going to explain more about this important day and share some top tips on how to stay safe when using the web. We’ve also recommended some powerful tools you can use to protect your child from harmful content. When is Safer Internet Day 2024? This year, Safer Internet Day will take place on Tuesday the 6th of February. In fact, 2024 marks the 20th anniversary of SID. What's the purpose of Safer Internet Day? Safer Internet Day brings people "together for a better internet" by encouraging individuals, companies, educators, and policymakers to engage with children and young people on topics surrounding online safety, cyberbullying, and the responsible use of social media. It's all about raising awareness and providing an opportunity for everyone to take a step back and reflect on their own digital behaviour. But more importantly, it's about making the internet a safer place for everyone and teaching people how to mitigate risks on their devices. How do I stay safe on the internet? The internet lets you do lots of cool things. You can shop online, read articles, watch videos, share content with friends on social media — it's almost endless. As we spend so much of our lives online, that’s why it's so important that we take steps to protect ourselves. Because there are people out there who exploit the internet to scam other users and infect their devices with damaging viruses. Here are some top tips to help you stay safe when using the internet: Keep software up to date: Tech like your smartphone will encourage you to update its software every once in a while. That's because these updates will usually include security patches to help protect you against the latest online threats. Use strong and unique passwords: Loads of people use the same, obvious passwords across their online accounts. That’s why you should always create complex and hard-to-guess passwords that only you will know. And you can even use tools like LastPass that’ll securely store your login details and generate secure passwords for you. Turn on two-factor authentication: This adds an extra layer of security to your online accounts by requiring a code in addition to your password. Lots of services now offer this feature, so it's best to use it whenever you can. Don't click on random links and attachments: Only click on links or download attachments from emails or websites that you trust. Posts you might see on social platforms can contain dodgy links too, so always be careful. Use a VPN: A virtual private network (VPN) encrypts your internet traffic to help protect your privacy and security online. Consider using a reputable VPN service like NordVPN or ExpressVPN when using public Wi-Fi networks or accessing sensitive information. How do I keep my child safe when using the internet? Like it or not, we live in an increasingly digital world. So, it's important for kids to have access to the internet so that they can socialise with friends and find useful info that'll help them with their homework. But unfortunately, the web is full of sites that you’ll want to stop your child from seeing. As well as the useful tips above, you can also use other specialist tools that'll help to protect them from dangerous content online: Use parental control apps Third-party parental control apps let you monitor the sites your child visits and the apps they use on their smartphone. Here are a few of the best: Norton Family Norton Family lets you can see what your kids search for and the videos they watch, as well as monitor for age-appropriate content. You can also set screen time limits to control how much they use their device and locate their mobile phone with built-in tracking. Qustodio Qustodio is an all-in-one parental control tool that filters out and blocks websites, apps, and games with inappropriate content. And like Norton Family, it also allows you to set time limits. But one of the best things about Qustodio is that it lets you see who your child is calling and texting, and even block specific numbers. Aura Aura is another option that has pretty much everything you need to protect your family from internet baddies. Aside from the parental control app that's really easy to set up, Aura also provides a password manager, antivirus software, a VPN, and much more — including Dark Web monitoring, data breach alerts, and cyberbullying notifications. Try iD Mobile's content restricton service If you’re an iD Mobile customer, you'll be pleased to know that we offer a content restriction service that helps you to protect your child from viewing inappropriate content online. Here’s how to set it up: Log in to the iD Mobile app if you’re using a phone or tablet, or log in to the my account area on a browser instead. Select the 'Services' option. Toggle adult content filtering 'On' or 'Off'. Restrict in-app purchases Lots of apps and mobile phone games will try to entice users with in-app purchases. And if your child's not careful or aware of how much these sneaky in-app purchases can cost, then it could end up setting you back a few hundred pounds. Here's how to stop any accidental spending: On iPhone Open the Settings app and tap on 'Screen Time'. If you haven't already, set up Screen Time and create a passcode. Tap on 'Content & Privacy Restrictions'. If it's not already enabled, toggle the switch to turn it on. Tap on 'iTunes & App Store Purchases'. Select 'In-App Purchases' and toggle the switch to turn it off. On Android Phones Open the Google Play Store app. Open the menu and select 'Settings'. Scroll down to 'User controls' and choose 'Parental controls'. Tap the toggle switch to turn on parental controls. Create a PIN code to use for controlling in-app purchases. Once enabled, you can adjust the settings to control what content is accessible and what can be purchased. Bar the use of Premium Rate Services Premium Rate Services (otherwise known as 'phone-paid services') are goods and services you can buy using things like a mobile phone. This can include competitions, mobile games, charity donations, and more. You can restrict access to Premium Rate Services with help from iD Mobile. Our 'Premium' services option can be accessed from your iD Mobile account or the iD Mobile app, which lets you bar all use of future premium calls, SMS and MMS services. Do you have any other great tips for protecting yourself online? Please share them in the comments section below.

The best tech from CES 2024.Blog
Cool new stuff from the world’s biggest electronics show. CES 2024 came, saw and conquered in Las Vegas earlier this month (9th to 12th January). It’s the world’s biggest Consumer Electronics Show, and we got to see amazing new tech from the biggest brands – along with fun and quirky stuff from the smaller tech companies. Here’s a rundown of the most exciting and innovative tech we saw at the show. Samsung’s transparent and glare-free TVs Samsung revealed its 2024 TV lineup, featuring the world's first transparent Micro-LED display. The jaw-dropping demo at the show showcased everything from dazzling fireworks to vibrant paint splashes on the transparent screen. We’re also going to see some Samsung TVs with glare-free technology, which is another feature that really impressed up close. The screen has a matte finish that absorbs light, rather than reflecting it - so nothing detracts from the bright and vibrant OLED display. The latest Neo QLED 8K, Neo QLED 4K, OLED were also on display at the show, and these TVs will be using advanced AI to improve motion (great for sports), depth, and the dialogue in your favourite movies. LG TVs go big on AI LG arguably stole the show at CES 2024 with the world's first wireless transparent OLED TV, a colossal 77-inch display that showed off a mesmerising 3D-like depth when in transparency mode. Hold the remote, press a button, and unveil what's behind the screen – seriously cool! Other OLED TVs in the new LG range will be using AI to sharpen objects, refine colours, and produce virtual surround sound for a more lifelike viewing experience than ever before. HP unveils new Spectre and Omen gaming laptops HP was out to impress with its spectacular new Omen and Spectre laptops. The Omen Transcend 14 sounds like an absolute game changer for gaming on the go - HP says it’s the lightest 14” gaming laptop ever made, weighing in at a mere 1.6 kg. The Spectre laptops, loaded with AI tech, bring dynamic refresh rates and automatic background blur for a gaming experience smoother than ever before. Asus redesigns its ROG Zephyrus G14 and G16 gaming laptops Asus has improved a couple of its most popular gaming laptops – the ROG Zephyrus G14 and G16. These are going to be the first laptops to feature OLED displays, and the slimmer new aluminium body really looks the part too. Samsung’s new wireless controller Samsung has announced a nifty new wireless controller in partnership with PDP. It’s called the ‘Replay Midnight Blue’ and is the first ever ‘Designed for Samsung Gaming Hub’ piece of tech. It features a home button to instantly launch the Samsung Gaming Hub, and lasts for 40 hours on a single charge. That’s a lot of gaming. MSI Claw A1M – snappy handheld gaming MSI debuts the Claw A1M console, powered by an Intel Meteor Lake processor. This is really specials, as most other handheld consoles use an AMD chip instead. The new Claw will have a 7-inch Full HD IPS display and 120Hz refresh rate for smoother and more responsive gameplay, and we can’t wait to get our hands on it! Razer’s ‘Project Esther’ gaming cushion Razer is looking after our bottom line with its new ‘Project Esther’ gaming cushion. Get ready to feel the rumble of a passing tank – this is literally edge-of-your-seat gaming. LG launches new Gram Pro laptops LG has added a couple of sleek and lightweight Gram laptops to its lineup. These Pro models come in 16-inch or 17-inch sized displays, with upgraded OLED panels that now allow touch input. Oh, and the revamped stylus now recharges magnetically when attached to these ultra-sleek laptops. Clever stuff. LG’s new washer dryer with AI smarts The new LG WashCombo™ All-in-One washer dryer has built-in sensors that use AI tech to detect fabric texture, soil level and load size. It then automatically selects the right wash and dry motions, and the best temperatures for spotless laundry every time. Cocktails at the touch of a button Forget shaking mixers and measuring out spirits, Bartesian's cocktail-mixing appliance removes the guesswork from bartending. The Premier edition holds up to four types of spirits, offers 60 recipes available at the touch of a screen. Just drop a cocktail capsule in the machine, and in seconds enjoy a premium cocktail over ice. Cheers to that! Paws for thought Doggy tech company PawPort has come up with a smart door that only opens when it detects the sensor on your faithful pet’s collar approaching. It also comes with an app that lets you track your dog’s whereabouts, and you can even set curfew times – just in case your dog’s too much of a party animal at night-time. Ballys’s back! Bally first made an appearance as a tennis-ball sized robot waaaay back in CES 2020. That’s a long time in the tech world. Now Bally’s back and bigger, with a built-in projector and lots more brains. Bally can now follow you (or your pets) around the home to make sure everything’s okay, and it’ll even greet you with a welcome message as you walk in the door. New Year, New You: 5 tips to make the most of 2024.Blog
As we step into 2024, it's time once again to reflect on the year ahead. What are your aspirations for this year? Which new skills are you excited to learn? How will you carve out time for what truly matters? These are common questions with no one-size-fits-all answers. However, if you've set ambitious resolutions, one key ingredient you'll need is motivation. This January let's shake things up. Instead of rehashing the usual top resolutions, we're offering some fresh New Year inspiration to jumpstart your journey to bigger achievements. 1. Prioritise your health. Remember the adage: health is wealth. And we're not just talking about signing up for a gym membership; it's about nurturing both your physical and mental well-being. Your goals for 2024 may vary, but the energy to pursue them often springs from a healthy state of mind and body. Dedicate daily time for activities that clear your mind and reduce stress. This could be yoga, meditation, a morning run, or a gym session. The secret to consistency? Enjoy the process. Cook and savour the healthy meals you love. Choose activities that thrill you over monotonous treadmill sessions. The hardest part is starting, but once you establish a routine, self-care becomes incredibly fulfilling and equips you to tackle any challenges on your path. 2. Manage your finances wisely. Financial health is a perennial goal. Achieving financial stability doesn't have to be daunting. There are simple steps you can take to stay on top of your expenses, grow your savings, and allocate funds for your dreams. Today's money management apps are more sophisticated than ever. Consider this: how often do our purchases total a round number? Rarely. Modern banking apps can round up each payment to the nearest dollar, funnelling the extra into a savings pot for your big plans, be it a dream vacation or reducing monthly bills. Besides apps, setting a budget is a proactive step towards financial wellness. You don't need a complete lifestyle overhaul to stretch your dollar further. For more tips, check out our 2024 Guide to Saving Money. 3. Make plans to realise your dreams. What's that long-held dream you've yet to chase? 2024 could be the year to turn it into reality. Whether it's writing a novel, mastering a new language, learning an instrument, or excelling in a sport, the possibilities are endless. Break down your big dream into smaller, manageable goals to make it achievable and satisfying. Need help tracking your progress? Apps like Strides on the App Store are excellent for setting and monitoring goals in various ways, including milestone markers to keep you motivated. 4. Make time for your loved ones. Balancing work and home life can be challenging, but it's crucial to stay connected with family and friends. These relationships enrich our lives far more than work or digital entertainment. Regularly check in with your loved ones through calls, texts, or in-person visits. Plan activities together, both offline and online. Share a meal, join a fitness class, or enjoy a theatre show. For long-distance relationships, tools like Teleparty can sync your movie-watching experiences. The key is to spend quality time doing what you love with those you cherish. 5. Unplug from Your Devices It might seem counter-intuitive coming from a phone network, but there are times when disconnecting is beneficial. Whether it's to focus on sleep, creative projects, or simply enjoying life's moments, stepping away from screens can be refreshing. Both iPhone and Android devices offer digital wellbeing features to assist you. iPhone users can set up downtime under Settings > Screen Time, while Android users can explore focus mode and bedtime mode under Settings > Digital Wellbeing. These tools help you manage screen time and improve your overall digital health. As we embrace 2024, let these ideas inspire you to make the most of the year ahead. Remember, the journey is as important as the destination. Taking breaks from screens and prioritising our mental and physical well-being can lead to increased productivity and happiness in our daily lives. By utilising the digital wellbeing features on our smartphones, we can take control of our screen time and create a healthier balance between technology and real-life experiences. Let's make 2024 a year of self-care and personal growth where we prioritise our well-being and make the most of every moment. Giveaway time - CLOSED. New Year, New You: 5 tips to make the most of 2023.Blog
It’s that time again – New Year! And like loads of people, you’re probably doing some deep thinking about the year ahead. How are you going to make this year your year? What new skills are you eager to learn? How will you set time aside to focus on the things that really matter? We all ask ourselves these questions – and there’s no right answer. The answers are as varied as we are! But if you’ve made some serious resolutions, the one thing you’ll need to achieve them is motivation. So this January, we thought we’d do something a little different. Instead of counting down the most popular resolutions (that’s so last year), we’ve put together some great New Year inspo that might be a springboard to even bigger things. 1.Focus on your health You know the saying: health is wealth. But we’re not just talking about that January gym subscription – we mean feeling good physically AND mentally. Whatever your specific goals are for 2023, the drive to achieve them often starts when you’re in a good place. Set some time aside each day to do something that clears your mind and relieves stress. We’re talking yoga, meditation, heading out for a jog or yes, lifting in the gym. The trick to sticking to it? Make your routine enjoyable. Find healthy recipes you love to cook and eat. Do activities that excite you instead of going autopilot on the treadmill. The first step is always the toughest, but once you’re in a routine, self-care can be extremely rewarding. And it means you’re better placed to overcome any challenges on the road to your goals. 2.Look after your finances This is one that should be on every list, every year. Getting a handle on your financial security doesn’t have to be a chore. There are plenty of easy steps you can take to make sure you’re always on top of expenses, building savings and setting money aside to do the things you’ve always wanted. You can even get help from your phone in the form of nifty money management apps. Think about it – how often do we make a purchase that totals up to a whole number? Not often at all. There are banking apps that can round up every payment you make to the nearest pound, putting that extra cash in a special pot to fund whatever big plans you have in mind – Hawaiian cruise, anyone? Or if you want something a little more functional, you can create a pot to whittle down those monthly bills with every transaction. And of course, aside from apps, setting a budget in advance is a great way to get a financial head start. You don’t need to completely overhaul your lifestyle to make your money go further. Check out our guide for more money-saving inspiration. The iD Mobile Guide to Saving Money in 2022 3.Make plans to achieve your aspirations Think about what you really want to do. A dream you’ve always had in the back of your mind but never quite got around to. What’s holding you back from making it a reality? 2023 could be the year it finally happens… Who knows - you might have an idea for a brilliant novel, the skills to fluently speak another language, the determination to learn a new instrument or the talent to become great at a new sport. The possibilities are endless, and having a plan to make them happen just makes your aspirations that much more realistic. Want to make it easier? Break that big aspiration down into smaller goals and milestones. Those little ‘job well done’ moments are what will make it sustainable and rewarding. If it’s the data you need to help you get closer to that goal, there are apps out there that can help. Check out Strides on the App Store. It’s one of the best apps for setting goals, and you can track them in four different ways. Plus, you can even plot in milestones to keep you feeling motivated. 4.Make time for family and friends Between work and home life, it can often feel like there just aren’t enough hours in the day to keep in regular touch with loved ones. But it’s the people closest to us that enrich our lives the most – not work, and not evening Netflix binges (we’re all guilty). Take the time to check in with your friends and family. Call, text, WhatsApp, FaceTime – or even go old school and pop over to say hi. Make plans to do things together, whether it’s in person or virtually. Go out to eat, join a gym together or take a trip to the theatre. If they’re long distance, download a Chrome extension like Teleparty to watch your favourite Netflix series together. Whatever you do, just take the time to do what you love with the people you love. 5.Disconnect from your phone We know – this probably isn’t the kind of resolution you’d expect to hear from us! After all, we are a phone network. However, there are times when you simply want to disconnect from the world and get the most out of whatever you’re doing; be it sleeping, writing an assignment or watching that big season finale. And we don’t just mean putting your phone down – take a break from social media if you feel like you could do with some time away. Both iPhones and Androids have great digital wellbeing features to help you power down when you need to. If you have an iPhone, set up Downtime to give you a break whenever you want to put your phone down for a little while. Just head to Settings > Screen Time > Downtime. You can set a schedule to take a break at the same time each day, or even customise what days you want to set your phone aside and for how long. With Android’s digital wellbeing settings, there are two options. You can block any distracting apps, pings and notifications in Focus Mode. Or, if you want to improve the quality of your sleep, set up Bedtime Mode to silence your phone and change the screen to black and white at set times. Simply head to Settings > Digital Wellbeing to get started. Giveaway time! - Closed This month we’re giving one lucky winner the chance to celebrate the New Year with a choice of FITBIT Charger 5 or £100 Currys gift voucher. To be in with a chance to win we want you to tell us whether you are making a new years resolution and, for those that are, what it is. Entries close at 23:59 on 19th January 2023, and we'll announce the lucky iD community winner shortly after. We’ll notify the winner by direct message here on the Community, so please keep an eye on your inbox. Good Luck!

A tech-tacular Christmas tale...Blog
Our story begins with a quaint little scene, Nick and Anita, and a glowing TV screen. With a sudden look of shock, Anita shouts “Nick! We’ve forgotten the brussels sprouts!” Nick's heart sank. "I'll sort it," he said, pulling out his phone and scratching his head. So many apps, but which one to choose? “Tescos” he thought, “and I’ll add some booze…” With a swipe and a tap, the order was placed. "Click-and-collect tomorrow morning," he announced with a smile on his face. The next day, Christmas Eve, Anita looked perplexed. "Nick! The kids' gifts from Aunt Joy haven't come yet!" "No worries," Nick replied, opening the ParcelTrack app. He found that lost package with a few little taps. "Ah, looks like it ended up at number 26!" A quick trip to the neighbours, and Nick returned with the gifts. Feeling festive, Nick put on some songs. “Something cheerful” he thought, “let’s all sing along”. Spotify on his phone, smart speakers connected, Nick loaded some tunes but was soon disrespected! “Come on dad!” The little ones cried, “It’s 2023, not 1989!” “Fine!” Nick relented, “What would you like, Claire?” “Anything’s good, just not Walking in the Air!” While Anita wrapped the last of the pressies, Nick gathered the kids in front of the telly. "Movie time!" he declared, casting Netflix from his phone. The kids quickly lost interest and left poor Nick all alone. The big day arrived, and it was time for a feast! Nick gawked at the turkey, “how do I cook this beast!?” Hearing the grumbles, Anita peeked in, "Everything okay, dear?" “Yes! I’m just… focussing!” Grabbing the phone once more, Nick opened BBC Good Food. After a few minutes scrolling, he calmed his foul mood. A recipe so simple, he couldn’t go wrong! He took up his tools and put on a song. The table was set, the turkey was roasting, but Anita didn’t quite feel like toasting. "I wish Mum could've made it," she said with a sigh. Nick nodded solemnly. “I know, love, so do I”. With a smile the likes Anita had never seen, Nick said with a flourish, “Let’s get her on screen!” He opened WhatsApp and dialled dear old nan. Grandma was thrilled, “What a clever young man!” As evening fell, Nick had one more treat for the family. He snuck outside, but things had gone badly. The lights were all out! What could he do? "Plan B," he muttered, opening Phillips Hue. With a few taps in the app, the house lit up like a dream. It wasn’t quite as planned, but it made a lovely Christmas scene. "Wow, Dad!" the children exclaimed, their eyes sparkling with joy. Their faces filled with wonder and Nick thought to himself, “Better than any new toy.” As the house quieted down, Anita gave Nick a nudge. "Did you take any photos today, my love?" With a mischievous “ho ho ho”, Nick took out his phone. He opened it up to Google Photos. Captured within, a most magical day. Four faces of joy and happiness there on display. With a cheeky smooch on the sofa, the happy couple settle down. “I think next year, we’ll just do turkey crown”. The day had been saved, multiple times it seemed! A simple smartphone, the only elf Nick needs. From rescuing dinner, to connecting loved ones, the apps on his phone had brought much more than fun. "Best Christmas ever!" his kids had declared. Nick couldn’t believe it; he’d been so unprepared! Another year gone; they all go so fast! So, from Nick and everyone at iD, Merry Christmas!

The festive season is absolutely ace. With Christmas markets, family get-togethers, and even trips abroad filling up your calendar. It’s easily one of the most fun and sociable times of the year, but it can also be one of the busiest. Which makes it a bit of a hassle to travel if you’re not prepared. Don’t let those Christmas jingles turn into jitters though. If you’re going to be on the move a lot through December and into the new year, then there are some great apps that’ll turn your phone into your very own travel guide. No sleigh required! Skyscanner Skyscanner makes planning your next trip abroad a walk in the park. You can search for everything from flights to hotels while you’re on the go. And you can even compare and book offers straight from the app too, saving you some time and money. The Skyscanner app can also give you cheap flight recommendations to anywhere in the world. Perfect for some spontaneous Christmas getaway inspiration! You can even set up 'Price Alerts' and the app will let you know when the cost of a flight changes —helping you book at exactly the right time for the lowest price. But best of all? There are no hidden costs or booking fees at all. Nice. Trainline You’ve got your flights covered, so what about trains? The Trainline app’s got your back. It'll show you live times and disruption info to keep your journey on track. And it’ll also let you know about any price drops for even cheaper tickets. Meaning you’ll have more to spend on presents instead. Trainline covers plenty of ground too, with 270+ train and coach operators across 45 countries — all in one place. And for safe contactless travel, you can even use the app to book your tickets. Say bye-bye to queuing up! With plenty of other handy features too, Trainline puts lots of planning power right in your pocket. Citymapper Citymapper does a bit of everything. Covering major cities in Europe, the US, and the rest of the world — this amazing app lets you compare travel options in real-time across all types of transport. The Citymapper app gives you turn-by-turn directions for any trip whether you're walking, cycling, or taking the bus. So, there’s no way you’ll get lost like Kevin did in Home Alone 2! You can even compare cab fares, find nearby e-scooters, and see where your train is on a map. Airbnb It’s 2023, so if you haven’t heard of Airbnb — where have you been? If you're planning on visiting friends and family in the UK, overseas — or just want to ditch the cold weather for somewhere warm — you can book the perfect place to stay. From cosy cabins to beach apartments with amazing views, Airbnb makes booking a total breeze. There are over 100 filters to help find the best short or long-stay home too. Want a fireplace or a pool? No problem! Plus, Airbnb keeps all your essential trip info in one place so you won’t miss anything important. Google Maps Google Maps is one of the world's most downloaded apps for a reason. With more than 220 countries and a few hundred million businesses and places mapped — it's not bad for a free app, is it? On top of that, you get real-time GPS navigation with traffic and public transport info to keep your journeys running smooth. Late for Christmas lunch? Google Maps will find the fastest route so you can avoid the roadworks and get there on time. And if you need to stop somewhere on the way to pick up a last-minute gift, just tap on a shop to see when it’s open and if it’s got good reviews.

How to take perfect festive photos on your phone.Blog
Whether it’s get togethers of family or friends, a city break away or festive markets, the Christmas period is a great time to take pictures. And with smartphone cameras becoming more advanced, taking stunning photos has never been easier. So here are some simple yet winning tips to make sure your festive photos sparkle and shine. Snappy Christmas! 1. Find the right lighting Good lighting is the fundamental to any great photo. During the festive season, try and use natural light whenever possible, because you’ll always get the best pics. If there’s even a dusting of snow, make the most of it – since snowfall will give you even more light to work with and look awesome. But we all know that the winter is all about dark nights and bright lights. Fortunately, most phones now have a Night Mode for low-light conditions. A mixture of clever AI and greater exposure can make gatherings or Christmas markets sparkle. If your phone doesn’t have a low-light mode, try to take pictures where the light’s good and don’t overuse the flash – because that can lead to washed out pictures that don’t capture the moment. 2. Take aim and frame Before you take your pic, take a moment to frame your shot. Start with the rule of thirds – mentally divide your frame into thirds both vertically and horizontally and make sure the people or things you want to capture are along these lines or at the spot where two lines meet. If this sounds like way too much to remember, you don’t have to. Both Android and iPhones have a grid overlay you can apply so that you’ll always have a guide. So, experiment with different angles and perspectives to add depth and make your festive snaps pop. Don't be afraid to get creative! 3. Make the most of those festive details Whether it’s decorations, wrapped up gifts or ornaments on a tree, it’s the little festive details that make the season special. Close-up shots of these things give you spice and variety to your photo albums, as well as really capturing the time of year. Heading out to a Winter Wonderland, festive market or skating rink and you should get lots of perfect photo opps. 4. Capture those aww moments Some of the most heart-warming and best photos come from capturing those genuine moments. Cheesy snaps of everyone in a pose are always fun, but the most memorable pics are always the most real: snap them when they're engaged in conversation, sharing a laugh or simply enjoying the festive atmosphere. These candid shots often really capture the festive fun best. Just make sure you show them your work before sharing. Everybody wants to make sure it’s their best side! 5. Use Portrait Mode Most modern smartphones have a portrait mode feature that keeps the person in focus while blurring the background, creating a beautiful depth-of-field effect. This is great for highlighting subjects – whether it's a person, a pet or a beautifully wrapped gift. They also tend to look very flattering! 6. Use editing apps Once you have your pictures, make them even better with editing apps. And you don’t need to be a Photoshop pro either. Most modern phones will have options to adjust brightness, contrast, colours, and apply filters to give your photos that extra festive sparkle. And you can try out third party apps for more options or to even make your action pics a GIF! Play around with these tools, but remember, less is often more when it comes to editing. 7. Keep your lens clean It might seem simple, but a clean lens can make a world of difference in the quality of your photos. Our phones are often in our pockets or bags, gathering smudges and fingerprints on the camera lens. And that’s not even considering the sticky fingers from festive food. Before taking those snaps, give your phone's lens a gentle wipe with a soft cloth to ensure crystal-clear photos. They’ll never look their best otherwise. Are you a bit of phone photo pro? The best tech gifts under £100.Blog
Need some ideas for the perfect Christmas prezzie? No worries – we’ve got your back. Finding the right gift can be a bit tricky. With so much stuff to pick from, it can quickly go from being something fun, and become an absolute slog instead. Especially when you’re battling through the crowds on the high street! But we’ve made things easy. Every present here is under a hundred quid. And we’ve got some epic stocking thrillers to check out – whether they’re a big foodie, or a serious gamer. You can thank us later… For the gaming guru… In Spider-Man 2 they’ll suit up as Peter Parker and Miles Morales (yep, there are two webslingers to play as here), to protect the streets of New York. And they’re going to be up against some of the toughest super villains out there. From the deadly Venom to the monstrous – and massive - Lizard. Gulp. And there’s plenty of cool new powers to marvel at here. Pete gets access to symbiotic tentacles, which are perfect for taking out groups of bad guys. While Miles uses electricity to zap enemy henchmen into next week. They’ll be buzzing to try them out… Of course, the web slinging acrobatics are back too – letting them swing between skyscrapers and iconic landmarks around the city. Oh, and we haven’t even mentioned the Web Wings yet. They’re like taking Superman and a wing suit and mashing them together. Meaning they can whizz from Brooklyn to Queens in a flash. Nice. For the fitness fanatic… If they’re always down the gym, you can’t go wrong with a good pair of earbuds. And the Skullcandy Push are the perfect workout buddy. The over-ear hangers will sit snugly on their ears, so they won’t fly off when they’re going for a personal best on the treadmill. While an IP55 water resistance helps the buds to stay in tip top shape, even when they’re getting a sweat on. They won’t even have to let go of the rowing machine to skip a song. Voice control lets them tweak the volume, take a call, or pause the track without even picking up their phone. So, nothing is going to get in the way and interrupt their session. Let’s say they accidentally left the buds behind on the bench press after too. No worries. With the handy ‘Find Your Earbuds’ function, they can use their phone to track them down. Phew! For the music lover… With the JBL Flip 6 portable Bluetooth speaker, they can take their tunes pretty much anywhere. The garden. The pool. The skate park. And wherever it is, their playlists are going to pop. That’s all down to the separate tweeter and bass drivers that pump out deep, rich sound for every song. They won’t have to hit pause on the party either. There’s up to 12 hours of battery life to play with, so they can spin those records all night long. Plus, they can channel their inner sound engineer if things still aren’t up to scratch. Using the JBL Portable app, they can amp up their audio or tweak the bass to get everything just right. Sounds good to us. For the master chef… Fancy themselves as a bit of a dab hand in the kitchen? Well air fryers are all the rage right now. So, why not get them the Tefal Easy Fry? If they’ve got a big family, then the whopping 6.2 litre capacity is more than enough room for whipping up some mega meals. And they don’t have to be Gordon Ramsay to get restaurant quality results either. With 7 presets to try out, it’s easy to nail crispy fries, juicy salmon steaks or even a whole roast chicken every single time. Every recipe is going to be nice and fast as well. It’s way quicker to serve up a tasty dish than using a normal oven. Making it especially good for those 20-minute dinners when they can’t be bothered to cook after work. For the wannabee photographer… If they’re always taking photos on their phone, why not get them an actual camera? The Instax Mini 40 is great for capturing the fun, whether that’s a big night out or a wedding reception. It’s super easy to use too. There’s no faffing about with choosing the right exposure or sorting the white balance. They just have to switch it on, line up the shot and snap away. Meaning they can focus on the fun stuff – taking the actual photos. And when they’ve got one that’s perfect, they’ll get a physical copy they can share or frame. Just wait about 90 seconds and the camera will print their pic. It’s proper old-school and adds a nice little bit of nostalgia as well! Got any cool tech gifts we should know about? How to spot and avoid mobile phone scams.Blog
A lot of us live our lives on our smartphones. We use them for more than just calls, texts, and browsing the web; as a result, they also store personal and sensitive data. Unfortunately, this makes them a target for fraudsters. Mobile phone scams are getting smarter and more prevalent. There are many types of scams out there; thankfully, often, these scams are often easy to spot if you know what to look out for. Below, we will give you a brief insight into the most common scams targeting mobile phone users and a few tips on how to spot them. Smishing (SMS Phishing) Smishing combines SMS and phishing, where scammers send text messages that appear to be from trusted sources, like banks or service providers. These messages may contain malicious links, direct you to fake websites, or request personal information. How to spot it: Look out for generic greetings or misspellings. Suspicious links that don’t match known domains. Urgent or alarming messages demanding immediate action. Requests for payment or verification using unconventional methods. What to do: Do not click on any links in the message. Never reply to the text. Report the message. You can do this by forwarding the text to 7726. If it claims to be from a bank or a similar institution, contact them directly via their official customer service channels. Phishing Calls Similar to smishing but conducted via phone calls. Fraudsters pose as representatives from banks, service providers, or government bodies, seeking sensitive information. How to spot it: Unsolicited calls asking for personal or financial details. Use of pressure tactics or threatening language. Caller IDs that appear genuine but may be spoofed. Evasive responses to questions about identity or affiliation. What to do: Hang up immediately on suspicious calls. Do not provide any personal information over the phone. Verify the caller’s identity by contacting the organization they claim to represent through official channels. Report the incident to your network provider and, if appropriate, to the police or fraud prevention agencies. Phone Upgrade Scam Unsolicited callers offer enticing phone upgrades with hidden catches, or they may seek personal details under this pretext. How to spot it: Claiming to be from a network other then the one you’re on. Offers that seem too good to be true. High-pressure sales tactics for immediate decisions. Early requests for payment or personal details. Lack of detailed knowledge about the offered products. What to do: Avoid agreeing to any deals or sharing details over the phone. Check the legitimacy of the offer by contacting your service provider directly through their official channels. Be cautious of providing credit card or personal information. Report the scam call to your network provider and relevant authorities if necessary. Text Scams: Billing & Account-related Scammers send messages claiming issues with your account or bills. Engaging can lead to financial losses or stolen details. How to spot it: Alerts about unexpected bills or account issues. Instructions to click a link for issue resolution. Messages creating a sense of panic or urgency. Sender details that mismatch official contact information. What to do: Don't reply to the text or click on any links. Check your account directly via the official app or website, app, or contact customer service. Report the message. You can do this by forwarding the text to 7726. Change your account passwords if you suspect any compromise. Impersonation Scams Scammers impersonate someone you trust, like a family member or colleague, often with urgent stories needing financial help or information. How to spot it: A family member or friend texting you from a number other than their own. Sudden requests for money or personal details. Inconsistencies with known facts about the person. Discrepancies in voice or background details. Rushing you away from verification attempts. What to do: Do not send money or share personal details based on the request. Verify the caller’s identity by contacting them through a known and trusted method. Inform the police if the scam involves impersonation of legal entities or emergency situations. Alert your friends and family, especially if the scammer impersonates someone you know. PAC (Porting Authorisation Code) Fraud There are 2 forms of PAC fraud, one being where fraudsters will obtain a PAC by accessing your account or impersonating you when speaking to customer service, the other being when they attempt to trick you into acquiring and revealing your PAC code, enabling them to transfer your number to a new SIM, intercepting calls and texts. How to spot it: Receiving a text message from your network advising you of your PAC code, when you didn’t request one. Unexpected requests for a PAC code. Sudden loss of mobile service. Unusual activities or transfer requests on your phone. Communications from unknown carriers or for uninitiated switches. What to do: Never share your PAC code unless you initiated the number porting process. If you receive unexpected requests, contact your mobile service provider immediately. Monitor your phone for any service interruptions. Report any suspicious activity to your provider and consider changing your account security settings. By familiarising yourself with the above, you can respond effectively to potential scams, minimizing the risk of falling victim to these deceptive tactics. Remember, staying alert and informed is your first line of defence. If you think you’ve been a victim of mobile phone fraud, contact your bank, Action Fraud and your mobile network immediately. Are there any scams out there that haven’t been mentioned above? Share them with the Community below.

6 signs that it’s time to upgrade your phone.Blog
Is your smartphone struggling with basic tasks? Do you dread going out without a charger? Sounds like it’s time for an upgrade. Unlike cosmetic issues that can sometimes be fixed, processor slow-down and battery issues are inevitable as your phone ages. There are loads of warning signs to watch out for, so we’ve focused on some of the major ones. If any ring true, it’s time to consider how long you’ve had your phone and if it’s still up to the task. 1.Failing battery and random shutdowns Does your phone's battery drain faster than a Formula 1 car? Smartphone batteries are made with lithium-ion and can go through 300-500 full charge cycles before they start to deteriorate. After that, they tend to only hold between 70-80% of their original capacity, eventually losing the ability to recharge altogether. So, if you can barely make it through the day without desperately searching for a charger, it's a clear signal. And if you’re out and about and need your phone for directions or to pay for stuff, having a battery on red or your phone randomly shutting down can be legitimately stressful. Newer smartphones will give you a brand-new battery with much better battery performance, so it could be time for a replacement. 2.You can’t update apps or your operating system If you’ve had your phone a long time, the manufacturer may eventually stop supporting your device. You won’t be able to upgrade to the latest operating system or install security patches, which may expose your sensitive data to hackers. With every OS update, your smartphone experience should become smoother and more intuitive. Using a phone that’s too old means you’ll miss out on tons of new features. Even worse, it might not be compatible with faster 5G networks, so you’ll be stuck with slower data speeds. Being stuck in a time warp on an older OS will mean you miss out on the latest versions of your favourite apps too. Upgrade before you’re left in the dust. 3.Your phone is slooooow There’s nothing worse than lag. Maybe those apps ate taking an Ice Age to open. Or maybe your touchscreen is getting less and less responsive. If the lag is software, you can at least clean up and reboot your phone and see if that helps. But if it’s the touchscreen, there’s not that much you can do about it. In either case, you it might be time to upgrade to a phone that does what you want, when you want. The difference will be a huge relief! 4.Your screen or chassis is heavily damaged Let’s face it – we’ve all dropped our phones at some point. There’s no feeling quite like tentatively retrieving your phone from the floor and hoping that the screen is intact. But there comes a point when your device has had one mishap too many. A cracked screen’s not a good look, and all those knocks might eventually loosen hardware parts and affect the smooth running of your device. Imagine the delight of a pristine screen with no cracks or scratches. Treat yourself! 5.Your phone takes poor quality photos and videos If you're tired of blurry photos, underwhelming selfies, and missing out on those stunning Instagram-worthy shots, a camera upgrade might be your calling. Newer phones boast fantastic camera technology, making you the envy of all your mates on social media. Modern smartphone cameras are incredible. Many feature main lenses with over 48 megapixels, backed by wide-angle and macro lenses. They can shoot seamless, shake-free 4K or even 8K footage and take fantastic selfies with HD front-facing cameras. Being able to capture crisp memories is one of the most compelling reasons to upgrade. 6.You’ve run out of storage space and memory Had your phone for years? All those precious photos, videos and apps means that it’s probably getting full. Unfortunately, if your device doesn’t support expandable storage, there’s not much you can do without having to pay extra for Cloud based storage. And while you can transfer pics and videos of your phone manually, are you ever going to get round to doing it? If larger apps keep crashing on your device whilst they work fine for those around you, you probably need more RAM (Random Access Memory). The more RAM your device has, the quicker it performs tasks and the better it is at multitasking. Many new phones feature upwards of 6GB RAM for incredible responsiveness and the ability to run the latest apps. Make sure you purchase a device with enough RAM for your long-term needs. Decided that an upgrade is right for you? Check if you can upgrade now. Wait! Don’t just chuck your old phone away. There are plenty of ways to get use out of your old phone whilst doing your bit to reduce landfill. Why not trade-in your old device? If you purchased your phone within the last 5 years, you may be able trade it in and put the money towards an impressive new device. The value of your device will depend on its market value and physical condition. Our trade-in service is powered by Currys. See how much your device is worth.

Great discount & cashback apps.Blog
Love a deal? Let’s be honest, who doesn’t. Bagging a bargain is great. Sometimes you’ll stumble on a great one, but you might have to do some digging to find the best. Nowadays though, there’s loads of services out there that’ll make your money go a little bit further. Or help you get some back when you’ve done a big shop. So, we’ve rounded up a few of our favourites and put them into two categories. Cashback – spend money, get a bit back – and discounts (get money off before you actually spend anything). Let’s get into it… Best apps for Cashback Cashback can be pretty appealing. You might just get a few pennies back on your shop. But you can also get a whole load off a big purchase. We’ve all seen cashback offers here and there, but with these special apps, it’s even easier to track down a top deal. Quidco Quidco is very similar, offering thousands of UK brands and almost identical claims on how much their members get in cashback a year (around £300). All you have to do is download the app or visit the site, find a deal you like, then select ‘Get cashback’ and make your purchase. Once again, Quidco also has different ways of getting your money – bank transfer, PayPal or gift cards. Kidstart Kidstart is pretty different to most of the cashback apps out there. And, like the name suggests, it’s perfect if you’ve got a kid. Any cashback you earn goes straight into your son or daughter’s savings account. Meaning you’ll be able to put a bit towards their future every time you do some shopping. We all know how hard it is to save, especially at the moment. But this’ll help you make sure they’ve got some savings set aside for when they’re older. They’ve partnered with over 2300 retailers – from Boots to Waitrose, Argos to eBay. So, whether you’re doing the weekly food shop (or picking up that perfect Christmas prezzie) you’ll earn free top ups for your child. Nice! Shopmium Shopmium will help you get cashback and discounts on all your regular household essentials. Browse through a list of all the available offers, then pick the ones you like the look of. You’ll be able to find a Shopmium deal for almost all of the major supermarkets – so wherever you grab your dinner from, you’ll be covered. You’ll then have to buy the items you chose and submit a photo of your receipt in the app. Once you’ve done that, you’ll be sent the cashback. It’s that easy. Plus, with their refer a friend scheme, you can get even more extra goodies. Just ask them to sign up with your referral code and you’ll both be sent a free reward. TopCashback TopCashback offers cashback from thousands of UK brands. Membership is free (but you can upgrade to a paid option), and you can choose how you get your cashback – straight to your account, via PayPal, or with gift cards to your favourite shops. To get cashback, you have to click through from the app or site, so they can get the commission and pass it on to you. Best apps for vouchers and discounts Prefer to get a discount straight from the off? Here’s a few of the best websites and apps for vouchers that’ll help to save you some cash whenever you go shopping. Honey Honey is perfect if you’re a savvy shopper. Once you’ve installed the app, it’ll automatically work with your web browser – scanning the internet for coupon codes and discounts when you shop online. Let’s say you’re after a new pair of shoes. When you get to the checkout, Honey steps in with the best discount codes and adds them to your order. So, you’ll save some cash, and some time too. As you won’t have to trawl the web looking for codes manually. Very handy. On average, people who use Honey are saving £102 every year. And with over 30,000 brands and stores signed up, all your favourite names are going to be even cheaper. Whether you’re ordering a tasty takeaway or getting your hands on the latest blockbuster video games. HotUKDeals HotUKDeals claims to be the UK’s number 1 deals community, and it’s easy to see why. They have a huge range of constantly evolving deals – some submitted by big brands, but mostly found by the community. HotUKDeals is known for being the place to find out about sudden drops in prices, as well as errors that let people get an unexpectedly good deal. Each deal has instructions on how to redeem – sometimes it’s specific to a store, sometimes it’s an easy link to buy. And because there’s clear information on how ‘hot’ the deal is, as well as minute by minute updates, you’re sure to find the latest and greatest offers. Groupon Love going out for dinner? Then Groupon should be your go-to app. With great deals on dining, you’ll be able to tuck into discounts at loads of top restaurants and cafes. Or, if you’re after something a bit more adventurous, you’ll be able to get money off activities and travel too. So, you could gear up for an adrenaline fuelled track day. Hop in a plane for a flying lesson. Or book a weekend away in a country manor. And do it all for even less! These deals aren’t around forever though. Everything on the platform is time sensitive. So, if you want to bag a bargain, you’ll have to be quick! Because all the offers are location based, you won’t just be saving yourself some cash. You’ll be supporting local businesses too. You never know, you might just find a proper hidden gem right round the corner from you. Got anymore great ideas for saving money online? Tell us about them in the comments below.

Contact posters You can now personalise how you appear in the contact lists of your friends (and when you call them). You can choose any image you want, and also change the fonts and colours. The choice is all yours. Check-in Check-in is a great new feature that lets your friends and family know that you’ve arrived at a destination safely. Meet the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro.Blog
Google has unveiled its two new flagship Pixel phones. The Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro are here, packed with amazing tech and lots of cool new camera features. Let’s take a closer look. Design and display Both phones are super stylish, with that classic Google design and smooth curves. The Pixel 8 has a satin finish that feels natural to hold, while the Pixel 8 Pro has a soft, silky matte glass finish and highly polished camera bar. Google announced that its using 100% recycled aluminium on these new phones, and all the packaging is now completely free of plastic. The Actua display is a Google first, and it looks spectacular. The Pixel 8 has a 6.2-inch Actua display that’s sharp, colourful and a whopping 42% brighter than on Pixel 7. Videos, games, photos and everything else you do will really pop. The Pixel 8 Pro takes things to the next level with its 6.7-inch Super Actual display. It’s even more immersive, and Google’s brightest display yet with 2,400 nits peak brightness. Even in direct sunlight, images look incredibly true to life. Plus, it has a variable refresh rate (from 1 to 120hz) that adjusts to your activity – if you’re gaming, the refresh rate will climb to keep up with the fast-moving onscreen action. If you’re simply browsing a few webpages, the refresh rate will drop right down. Upgraded cameras The Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro have had a serious camera upgrade, with videos being a real highlight - huge improvements have been made to auto-focus, low-light performance, dynamic range, shadows and skin tone accuracy. The Pixel 8 has a new 50MP wide camera and 12MP ultrawide camera, capable of producing 2x optical quality images and much better low light performance. Pixel 8 Pro has a new 50MP main camera that lets in 21% more light, a new 48 MP ultrawide lens with better macro focus, and an upgraded 48MP telephoto lens that can take photos with 10x optical quality. Magic Eraser has had a serious upgrade on Pixel 8 Pro. You can get rid of even bigger unwanted background images, and AI will fill in the gap perfecty naturally. Here are some standout new camera features that are on both the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro: Best Take improves group photos, by taking multiple shots and letting you choose the faces you want. So, no more dodgy blinking! Magic Editor gives you the power to select different objects in your photo and drag them to where you want. For example, if there’s too much space in the middle of your shot, you can bring everything closer together. Audio Magic Eraser makes videos sound even better. It uses Google AI to reduce annoying background sounds, leaving just the things you actually want to hear. If there’s a dog barking in the background of a happy birthday singalong, you can shush it right down. Serious power The Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro will both be powered by the new Tensor G3. It’s the most powerful chip that’s ever been in a Pixel, and has been custom designed with Google AI to make your life easier. For example, your Pixel instantly knows which language you’re speaking and can even switch between different languages. There’s also an option to have webpages read out loud – a great option if you’re taking the dog for a walk and don’t have your hands free to scroll. Battery, charging & storage Battery life just keeps getting better. Both Pixels have an ‘Adaptive Battery’ that can last over 24 hours, and ‘Extreme Battery Saver’ mode can give you up to 72 hours of power. Recharging is superfast too, so you can get back up and running in no time at all. You’ve got a choice of 128GB or 256GB storage on both phones. That’s plenty of room for loads of your favourite apps, games, videos, photos and music. Other cool new features To reduce dodgy spam calls, these new Pixels come with an AI-powered Call Screen featuret. This clever tech answers calls from suspicious numbers, and declines messages it identifies as spam. These phones are also the first phones to ship with Android 14. It’s Google’s brand new mobile operating system, with new features like AI-generated wallpaper and customisable lock-screens. On the back of the Pixel 8 Pro there’s a new temperature sensor on the camera bar. It’s a convenient way of checking things like the temperature of a pan or the milk in your baby’s bottle. In the future, Google says you’ll be able to take your own temperature and save it to the Fitbit app. Where can I order a Pixel 8 or Pixel 8 Pro? You can now order the Pixel 8 or Pixel 8 Pro (in bay, obsidian or porcelain) on a pay monthly iD Mobile plan that gives you all the flexibility and control you need. You can roll over unused data, cap your out-of-plan charges, enjoy ultra-fast 5G, and use the iD Mobile app to keep an eye on your monthly allowances.
