A tech-tacular Christmas tale...Blog
Our story begins with a quaint little scene, Nick and Anita, and a glowing TV screen. With a sudden look of shock, Anita shouts “Nick! We’ve forgotten the brussels sprouts!” Nick's heart sank. "I'll sort it," he said, pulling out his phone and scratching his head. So many apps, but which one to choose? “Tescos” he thought, “and I’ll add some booze…” With a swipe and a tap, the order was placed. "Click-and-collect tomorrow morning," he announced with a smile on his face. The next day, Christmas Eve, Anita looked perplexed. "Nick! The kids' gifts from Aunt Joy haven't come yet!" "No worries," Nick replied, opening the ParcelTrack app. He found that lost package with a few little taps. "Ah, looks like it ended up at number 26!" A quick trip to the neighbours, and Nick returned with the gifts. Feeling festive, Nick put on some songs. “Something cheerful” he thought, “let’s all sing along”. Spotify on his phone, smart speakers connected, Nick loaded some tunes but was soon disrespected! “Come on dad!” The little ones cried, “It’s 2023, not 1989!” “Fine!” Nick relented, “What would you like, Claire?” “Anything’s good, just not Walking in the Air!” While Anita wrapped the last of the pressies, Nick gathered the kids in front of the telly. "Movie time!" he declared, casting Netflix from his phone. The kids quickly lost interest and left poor Nick all alone. The big day arrived, and it was time for a feast! Nick gawked at the turkey, “how do I cook this beast!?” Hearing the grumbles, Anita peeked in, "Everything okay, dear?" “Yes! I’m just… focussing!” Grabbing the phone once more, Nick opened BBC Good Food. After a few minutes scrolling, he calmed his foul mood. A recipe so simple, he couldn’t go wrong! He took up his tools and put on a song. The table was set, the turkey was roasting, but Anita didn’t quite feel like toasting. "I wish Mum could've made it," she said with a sigh. Nick nodded solemnly. “I know, love, so do I”. With a smile the likes Anita had never seen, Nick said with a flourish, “Let’s get her on screen!” He opened WhatsApp and dialled dear old nan. Grandma was thrilled, “What a clever young man!” As evening fell, Nick had one more treat for the family. He snuck outside, but things had gone badly. The lights were all out! What could he do? "Plan B," he muttered, opening Phillips Hue. With a few taps in the app, the house lit up like a dream. It wasn’t quite as planned, but it made a lovely Christmas scene. "Wow, Dad!" the children exclaimed, their eyes sparkling with joy. Their faces filled with wonder and Nick thought to himself, “Better than any new toy.” As the house quieted down, Anita gave Nick a nudge. "Did you take any photos today, my love?" With a mischievous “ho ho ho”, Nick took out his phone. He opened it up to Google Photos. Captured within, a most magical day. Four faces of joy and happiness there on display. With a cheeky smooch on the sofa, the happy couple settle down. “I think next year, we’ll just do turkey crown”. The day had been saved, multiple times it seemed! A simple smartphone, the only elf Nick needs. From rescuing dinner, to connecting loved ones, the apps on his phone had brought much more than fun. "Best Christmas ever!" his kids had declared. Nick couldn’t believe it; he’d been so unprepared! Another year gone; they all go so fast! So, from Nick and everyone at iD, Merry Christmas!

Apps to use when travelling this Christmas.Blog
The festive season is absolutely ace. With Christmas markets, family get-togethers, and even trips abroad filling up your calendar. It’s easily one of the most fun and sociable times of the year, but it can also be one of the busiest. Which makes it a bit of a hassle to travel if you’re not prepared. Don’t let those Christmas jingles turn into jitters though. If you’re going to be on the move a lot through December and into the new year, then there are some great apps that’ll turn your phone into your very own travel guide. No sleigh required! Skyscanner Skyscanner makes planning your next trip abroad a walk in the park. You can search for everything from flights to hotels while you’re on the go. And you can even compare and book offers straight from the app too, saving you some time and money. The Skyscanner app can also give you cheap flight recommendations to anywhere in the world. Perfect for some spontaneous Christmas getaway inspiration! You can even set up 'Price Alerts' and the app will let you know when the cost of a flight changes —helping you book at exactly the right time for the lowest price. But best of all? There are no hidden costs or booking fees at all. Nice. Trainline You’ve got your flights covered, so what about trains? The Trainline app’s got your back. It'll show you live times and disruption info to keep your journey on track. And it’ll also let you know about any price drops for even cheaper tickets. Meaning you’ll have more to spend on presents instead. Trainline covers plenty of ground too, with 270+ train and coach operators across 45 countries — all in one place. And for safe contactless travel, you can even use the app to book your tickets. Say bye-bye to queuing up! With plenty of other handy features too, Trainline puts lots of planning power right in your pocket. Citymapper Citymapper does a bit of everything. Covering major cities in Europe, the US, and the rest of the world — this amazing app lets you compare travel options in real-time across all types of transport. The Citymapper app gives you turn-by-turn directions for any trip whether you're walking, cycling, or taking the bus. So, there’s no way you’ll get lost like Kevin did in Home Alone 2! You can even compare cab fares, find nearby e-scooters, and see where your train is on a map. Airbnb It’s 2023, so if you haven’t heard of Airbnb — where have you been? If you're planning on visiting friends and family in the UK, overseas — or just want to ditch the cold weather for somewhere warm — you can book the perfect place to stay. From cosy cabins to beach apartments with amazing views, Airbnb makes booking a total breeze. There are over 100 filters to help find the best short or long-stay home too. Want a fireplace or a pool? No problem! Plus, Airbnb keeps all your essential trip info in one place so you won’t miss anything important. You can even chat with your host to get recommendations for those must-see local spots to make the most of your getaway. Google Maps Google Maps is one of the world's most downloaded apps for a reason. With more than 220 countries and a few hundred million businesses and places mapped — it's not bad for a free app, is it? On top of that, you get real-time GPS navigation with traffic and public transport info to keep your journeys running smooth. Late for Christmas lunch? Google Maps will find the fastest route so you can avoid the roadworks and get there on time. And if you need to stop somewhere on the way to pick up a last-minute gift, just tap on a shop to see when it’s open and if it’s got good reviews.

How to take perfect festive photos on your phone.Blog
Whether it’s get togethers of family or friends, a city break away or festive markets, the Christmas period is a great time to take pictures. And with smartphone cameras becoming more advanced, taking stunning photos has never been easier. So here are some simple yet winning tips to make sure your festive photos sparkle and shine. Snappy Christmas! 1. Find the right lighting Good lighting is the fundamental to any great photo. During the festive season, try and use natural light whenever possible, because you’ll always get the best pics. If there’s even a dusting of snow, make the most of it – since snowfall will give you even more light to work with and look awesome. But we all know that the winter is all about dark nights and bright lights. Fortunately, most phones now have a Night Mode for low-light conditions. A mixture of clever AI and greater exposure can make gatherings or Christmas markets sparkle. If your phone doesn’t have a low-light mode, try to take pictures where the light’s good and don’t overuse the flash – because that can lead to washed out pictures that don’t capture the moment. 2. Take aim and frame Before you take your pic, take a moment to frame your shot. Start with the rule of thirds – mentally divide your frame into thirds both vertically and horizontally and make sure the people or things you want to capture are along these lines or at the spot where two lines meet. If this sounds like way too much to remember, you don’t have to. Both Android and iPhones have a grid overlay you can apply so that you’ll always have a guide. So, experiment with different angles and perspectives to add depth and make your festive snaps pop. Don't be afraid to get creative! 3. Make the most of those festive details Whether it’s decorations, wrapped up gifts or ornaments on a tree, it’s the little festive details that make the season special. Close-up shots of these things give you spice and variety to your photo albums, as well as really capturing the time of year. Heading out to a Winter Wonderland, festive market or skating rink and you should get lots of perfect photo opps. 4. Capture those aww moments Some of the most heart-warming and best photos come from capturing those genuine moments. Cheesy snaps of everyone in a pose are always fun, but the most memorable pics are always the most real: snap them when they're engaged in conversation, sharing a laugh or simply enjoying the festive atmosphere. These candid shots often really capture the festive fun best. Just make sure you show them your work before sharing. Everybody wants to make sure it’s their best side! 5. Use Portrait Mode Most modern smartphones have a portrait mode feature that keeps the person in focus while blurring the background, creating a beautiful depth-of-field effect. This is great for highlighting subjects – whether it's a person, a pet or a beautifully wrapped gift. They also tend to look very flattering! 6. Use editing apps Once you have your pictures, make them even better with editing apps. And you don’t need to be a Photoshop pro either. Most modern phones will have options to adjust brightness, contrast, colours, and apply filters to give your photos that extra festive sparkle. And you can try out third party apps for more options or to even make your action pics a GIF! Play around with these tools, but remember, less is often more when it comes to editing. 7. Keep your lens clean It might seem simple, but a clean lens can make a world of difference in the quality of your photos. Our phones are often in our pockets or bags, gathering smudges and fingerprints on the camera lens. And that’s not even considering the sticky fingers from festive food. Before taking those snaps, give your phone's lens a gentle wipe with a soft cloth to ensure crystal-clear photos. They’ll never look their best otherwise. Are you a bit of phone photo pro? Any top tips for taking top shots? Let the Community know below.

The best tech gifts under £100.Blog
Need some ideas for the perfect Christmas prezzie? No worries – we’ve got your back. Finding the right gift can be a bit tricky. With so much stuff to pick from, it can quickly go from being something fun, and become an absolute slog instead. Especially when you’re battling through the crowds on the high street! But we’ve made things easy. Every present here is under a hundred quid. And we’ve got some epic stocking thrillers to check out – whether they’re a big foodie, or a serious gamer. You can thank us later… For the gaming guru… In Spider-Man 2 they’ll suit up as Peter Parker and Miles Morales (yep, there are two webslingers to play as here), to protect the streets of New York. And they’re going to be up against some of the toughest super villains out there. From the deadly Venom to the monstrous – and massive - Lizard. Gulp. And there’s plenty of cool new powers to marvel at here. Pete gets access to symbiotic tentacles, which are perfect for taking out groups of bad guys. While Miles uses electricity to zap enemy henchmen into next week. They’ll be buzzing to try them out… Of course, the web slinging acrobatics are back too – letting them swing between skyscrapers and iconic landmarks around the city. Oh, and we haven’t even mentioned the Web Wings yet. They’re like taking Superman and a wing suit and mashing them together. Meaning they can whizz from Brooklyn to Queens in a flash. Nice. For the fitness fanatic… If they’re always down the gym, you can’t go wrong with a good pair of earbuds. And the Skullcandy Push are the perfect workout buddy. The over-ear hangers will sit snugly on their ears, so they won’t fly off when they’re going for a personal best on the treadmill. While an IP55 water resistance helps the buds to stay in tip top shape, even when they’re getting a sweat on. They won’t even have to let go of the rowing machine to skip a song. Voice control lets them tweak the volume, take a call, or pause the track without even picking up their phone. So, nothing is going to get in the way and interrupt their session. Let’s say they accidentally left the buds behind on the bench press after too. No worries. With the handy ‘Find Your Earbuds’ function, they can use their phone to track them down. Phew! For the music lover… With the JBL Flip 6 portable Bluetooth speaker, they can take their tunes pretty much anywhere. The garden. The pool. The skate park. And wherever it is, their playlists are going to pop. That’s all down to the separate tweeter and bass drivers that pump out deep, rich sound for every song. They won’t have to hit pause on the party either. There’s up to 12 hours of battery life to play with, so they can spin those records all night long. Plus, they can channel their inner sound engineer if things still aren’t up to scratch. Using the JBL Portable app, they can amp up their audio or tweak the bass to get everything just right. Sounds good to us. For the master chef… Fancy themselves as a bit of a dab hand in the kitchen? Well air fryers are all the rage right now. So, why not get them the Tefal Easy Fry? If they’ve got a big family, then the whopping 6.2 litre capacity is more than enough room for whipping up some mega meals. And they don’t have to be Gordon Ramsay to get restaurant quality results either. With 7 presets to try out, it’s easy to nail crispy fries, juicy salmon steaks or even a whole roast chicken every single time. Every recipe is going to be nice and fast as well. It’s way quicker to serve up a tasty dish than using a normal oven. Making it especially good for those 20-minute dinners when they can’t be bothered to cook after work. For the wannabee photographer… If they’re always taking photos on their phone, why not get them an actual camera? The Instax Mini 40 is great for capturing the fun, whether that’s a big night out or a wedding reception. It’s super easy to use too. There’s no faffing about with choosing the right exposure or sorting the white balance. They just have to switch it on, line up the shot and snap away. Meaning they can focus on the fun stuff – taking the actual photos. And when they’ve got one that’s perfect, they’ll get a physical copy they can share or frame. Just wait about 90 seconds and the camera will print their pic. It’s proper old-school and adds a nice little bit of nostalgia as well! Got any cool tech gifts we should know about? Tell us all about them in the comments down below!

How to spot and avoid mobile phone scams.Blog
A lot of us live our lives on our smartphones. We use them for more than just calls, texts, and browsing the web; as a result, they also store personal and sensitive data. Unfortunately, this makes them a target for fraudsters. Mobile phone scams are getting smarter and more prevalent. There are many types of scams out there; thankfully, often, these scams are often easy to spot if you know what to look out for. Below, we will give you a brief insight into the most common scams targeting mobile phone users and a few tips on how to spot them. Smishing (SMS Phishing) Smishing combines SMS and phishing, where scammers send text messages that appear to be from trusted sources, like banks or service providers. These messages may contain malicious links, direct you to fake websites, or request personal information. How to spot it: Look out for generic greetings or misspellings. Suspicious links that don’t match known domains. Urgent or alarming messages demanding immediate action. Requests for payment or verification using unconventional methods. What to do: Do not click on any links in the message. Never reply to the text. Report the message. You can do this by forwarding the text to 7726. If it claims to be from a bank or a similar institution, contact them directly via their official customer service channels. Phishing Calls Similar to smishing but conducted via phone calls. Fraudsters pose as representatives from banks, service providers, or government bodies, seeking sensitive information. How to spot it: Unsolicited calls asking for personal or financial details. Use of pressure tactics or threatening language. Caller IDs that appear genuine but may be spoofed. Evasive responses to questions about identity or affiliation. What to do: Hang up immediately on suspicious calls. Do not provide any personal information over the phone. Verify the caller’s identity by contacting the organization they claim to represent through official channels. Report the incident to your network provider and, if appropriate, to the police or fraud prevention agencies. Phone Upgrade Scam Unsolicited callers offer enticing phone upgrades with hidden catches, or they may seek personal details under this pretext. How to spot it: Claiming to be from a network other then the one you’re on. Offers that seem too good to be true. High-pressure sales tactics for immediate decisions. Early requests for payment or personal details. Lack of detailed knowledge about the offered products. What to do: Avoid agreeing to any deals or sharing details over the phone. Check the legitimacy of the offer by contacting your service provider directly through their official channels. Be cautious of providing credit card or personal information. Report the scam call to your network provider and relevant authorities if necessary. Text Scams: Billing & Account-related Scammers send messages claiming issues with your account or bills. Engaging can lead to financial losses or stolen details. How to spot it: Alerts about unexpected bills or account issues. Instructions to click a link for issue resolution. Messages creating a sense of panic or urgency. Sender details that mismatch official contact information. What to do: Don't reply to the text or click on any links. Check your account directly via the official app or website, app, or contact customer service. Report the message. You can do this by forwarding the text to 7726. Change your account passwords if you suspect any compromise. Impersonation Scams Scammers impersonate someone you trust, like a family member or colleague, often with urgent stories needing financial help or information. How to spot it: A family member or friend texting you from a number other than their own. Sudden requests for money or personal details. Inconsistencies with known facts about the person. Discrepancies in voice or background details. Rushing you away from verification attempts. What to do: Do not send money or share personal details based on the request. Verify the caller’s identity by contacting them through a known and trusted method. Inform the police if the scam involves impersonation of legal entities or emergency situations. Alert your friends and family, especially if the scammer impersonates someone you know. PAC (Porting Authorisation Code) Fraud There are 2 forms of PAC fraud, one being where fraudsters will obtain a PAC by accessing your account or impersonating you when speaking to customer service, the other being when they attempt to trick you into acquiring and revealing your PAC code, enabling them to transfer your number to a new SIM, intercepting calls and texts. How to spot it: Receiving a text message from your network advising you of your PAC code, when you didn’t request one. Unexpected requests for a PAC code. Sudden loss of mobile service. Unusual activities or transfer requests on your phone. Communications from unknown carriers or for uninitiated switches. What to do: Never share your PAC code unless you initiated the number porting process. If you receive unexpected requests, contact your mobile service provider immediately. Monitor your phone for any service interruptions. Report any suspicious activity to your provider and consider changing your account security settings. By familiarising yourself with the above, you can respond effectively to potential scams, minimizing the risk of falling victim to these deceptive tactics. Remember, staying alert and informed is your first line of defence. If you think you’ve been a victim of mobile phone fraud, contact your bank, Action Fraud and your mobile network immediately. Are there any scams out there that haven’t been mentioned above? Share them with the Community below.

6 signs that it’s time to upgrade your phone.Blog
Is your smartphone struggling with basic tasks? Do you dread going out without a charger? Sounds like it’s time for an upgrade. Unlike cosmetic issues that can sometimes be fixed, processor slow-down and battery issues are inevitable as your phone ages. There are loads of warning signs to watch out for, so we’ve focused on some of the major ones. If any ring true, it’s time to consider how long you’ve had your phone and if it’s still up to the task. 1.Failing battery and random shutdowns Does your phone's battery drain faster than a Formula 1 car? Smartphone batteries are made with lithium-ion and can go through 300-500 full charge cycles before they start to deteriorate. After that, they tend to only hold between 70-80% of their original capacity, eventually losing the ability to recharge altogether. So, if you can barely make it through the day without desperately searching for a charger, it's a clear signal. And if you’re out and about and need your phone for directions or to pay for stuff, having a battery on red or your phone randomly shutting down can be legitimately stressful. Newer smartphones will give you a brand-new battery with much better battery performance, so it could be time for a replacement. 2.You can’t update apps or your operating system If you’ve had your phone a long time, the manufacturer may eventually stop supporting your device. You won’t be able to upgrade to the latest operating system or install security patches, which may expose your sensitive data to hackers. With every OS update, your smartphone experience should become smoother and more intuitive. Using a phone that’s too old means you’ll miss out on tons of new features. Even worse, it might not be compatible with faster 5G networks, so you’ll be stuck with slower data speeds. Being stuck in a time warp on an older OS will mean you miss out on the latest versions of your favourite apps too. Upgrade before you’re left in the dust. 3.Your phone is slooooow There’s nothing worse than lag. Maybe those apps ate taking an Ice Age to open. Or maybe your touchscreen is getting less and less responsive. If the lag is software, you can at least clean up and reboot your phone and see if that helps. But if it’s the touchscreen, there’s not that much you can do about it. In either case, you it might be time to upgrade to a phone that does what you want, when you want. The difference will be a huge relief! 4.Your screen or chassis is heavily damaged Let’s face it – we’ve all dropped our phones at some point. There’s no feeling quite like tentatively retrieving your phone from the floor and hoping that the screen is intact. But there comes a point when your device has had one mishap too many. A cracked screen’s not a good look, and all those knocks might eventually loosen hardware parts and affect the smooth running of your device. Imagine the delight of a pristine screen with no cracks or scratches. Treat yourself! 5.Your phone takes poor quality photos and videos If you're tired of blurry photos, underwhelming selfies, and missing out on those stunning Instagram-worthy shots, a camera upgrade might be your calling. Newer phones boast fantastic camera technology, making you the envy of all your mates on social media. Modern smartphone cameras are incredible. Many feature main lenses with over 48 megapixels, backed by wide-angle and macro lenses. They can shoot seamless, shake-free 4K or even 8K footage and take fantastic selfies with HD front-facing cameras. Being able to capture crisp memories is one of the most compelling reasons to upgrade. 6.You’ve run out of storage space and memory Had your phone for years? All those precious photos, videos and apps means that it’s probably getting full. Unfortunately, if your device doesn’t support expandable storage, there’s not much you can do without having to pay extra for Cloud based storage. And while you can transfer pics and videos of your phone manually, are you ever going to get round to doing it? If larger apps keep crashing on your device whilst they work fine for those around you, you probably need more RAM (Random Access Memory). The more RAM your device has, the quicker it performs tasks and the better it is at multitasking. Many new phones feature upwards of 6GB RAM for incredible responsiveness and the ability to run the latest apps. Make sure you purchase a device with enough RAM for your long-term needs. Decided that an upgrade is right for you? Check if you can upgrade now. Wait! Don’t just chuck your old phone away. There are plenty of ways to get use out of your old phone whilst doing your bit to reduce landfill. Why not trade-in your old device? If you purchased your phone within the last 5 years, you may be able trade it in and put the money towards an impressive new device. The value of your device will depend on its market value and physical condition. Our trade-in service is powered by Currys. See how much your device is worth.

Quidco Quidco is very similar, offering thousands of UK brands and almost identical claims on how much their members get in cashback a year (around £300). All you have to do is download the app or visit the site, find a deal you like, then select ‘Get cashback’ and make your purchase. Once again, Quidco also has different ways of getting your money – bank transfer, PayPal or gift cards. Kidstart Kidstart is pretty different to most of the cashback apps out there. And, like the name suggests, it’s perfect if you’ve got a kid. Any cashback you earn goes straight into your son or daughter’s savings account. Meaning you’ll be able to put a bit towards their future every time you do some shopping. We all know how hard it is to save, especially at the moment. But this’ll help you make sure they’ve got some savings set aside for when they’re older. They’ve partnered with over 2300 retailers – from Boots to Waitrose, Argos to eBay. So, whether you’re doing the weekly food shop (or picking up that perfect Christmas prezzie) you’ll earn free top ups for your child. Nice! Shopmium Shopmium will help you get cashback and discounts on all your regular household essentials. Browse through a list of all the available offers, then pick the ones you like the look of. You’ll be able to find a Shopmium deal for almost all of the major supermarkets – so wherever you grab your dinner from, you’ll be covered. You’ll then have to buy the items you chose and submit a photo of your receipt in the app. Once you’ve done that, you’ll be sent the cashback. It’s that easy. Plus, with their refer a friend scheme, you can get even more extra goodies. Just ask them to sign up with your referral code and you’ll both be sent a free reward. TopCashback TopCashback offers cashback from thousands of UK brands. Membership is free (but you can upgrade to a paid option), and you can choose how you get your cashback – straight to your account, via PayPal, or with gift cards to your favourite shops. To get cashback, you have to click through from the app or site, so they can get the commission and pass it on to you. Best apps for vouchers and discounts Prefer to get a discount straight from the off? Here’s a few of the best websites and apps for vouchers that’ll help to save you some cash whenever you go shopping. Honey Honey is perfect if you’re a savvy shopper. Once you’ve installed the app, it’ll automatically work with your web browser – scanning the internet for coupon codes and discounts when you shop online. Let’s say you’re after a new pair of shoes. When you get to the checkout, Honey steps in with the best discount codes and adds them to your order. So, you’ll save some cash, and some time too. As you won’t have to trawl the web looking for codes manually. Very handy. On average, people who use Honey are saving £102 every year. And with over 30,000 brands and stores signed up, all your favourite names are going to be even cheaper. Whether you’re ordering a tasty takeaway or getting your hands on the latest blockbuster video games. HotUKDeals HotUKDeals claims to be the UK’s number 1 deals community, and it’s easy to see why. They have a huge range of constantly evolving deals – some submitted by big brands, but mostly found by the community. HotUKDeals is known for being the place to find out about sudden drops in prices, as well as errors that let people get an unexpectedly good deal. Each deal has instructions on how to redeem – sometimes it’s specific to a store, sometimes it’s an easy link to buy. And because there’s clear information on how ‘hot’ the deal is, as well as minute by minute updates, you’re sure to find the latest and greatest offers. Groupon Love going out for dinner? Then Groupon should be your go-to app. With great deals on dining, you’ll be able to tuck into discounts at loads of top restaurants and cafes. Or, if you’re after something a bit more adventurous, you’ll be able to get money off activities and travel too. So, you could gear up for an adrenaline fuelled track day. Hop in a plane for a flying lesson. Or book a weekend away in a country manor. And do it all for even less! These deals aren’t around forever though. Everything on the platform is time sensitive. So, if you want to bag a bargain, you’ll have to be quick! Because all the offers are location based, you won’t just be saving yourself some cash. You’ll be supporting local businesses too. You never know, you might just find a proper hidden gem right round the corner from you. Got anymore great ideas for saving money online? Tell us about them in the comments below.

iOS 17 is here. It’s the newest version of iOS, Apple’s mobile operating system that runs on iPhone – and it comes with some exciting new changes to voicemail, emojis, Messages, Safari and lots more. Here’s all you need to know about it. The best new iOS 17 features There are lots of new features in the iOS 17 update. Here are some of our favourites: Standby This handy feature lets you turn your iPhone into a bedside alarm clock every night. You can even use an old iPhone that’s gathering dust in the drawer! When your iPhone is charging and placed on its side, it now goes into standby mode and becomes a smart display. This shows the time in a range of clock styles, and you can also choose to display other things like your favourite photos and widgets. NameDrop Here’s a quick and easy new way of sharing your number and contact details with someone else. Simply NameDrop your info to them in the same way you pay for stuff on your phone. Turn on NFC, hover your iPhone over theirs, and they’ll automatically receive your contact info. Live voicemail If someone calls you and leaves a voicemail message, you can see what’s being said as it happens, with a transcription appearing in real time on your lock screen Then of course, you can make the decision to take the call or ignore it. Contact posters You can now personalise how you appear in the contact lists of your friends (and when you call them). You can choose any image you want, and also change the fonts and colours. The choice is all yours. Check-in Check-in is a great new feature that lets your friends and family know that you’ve arrived at a destination safely. If you aren’t making progress, Messages will ask you to respond. If you don’t, it shares information with your selected contacts, including your location, battery level, and mobile network status. Other iOS 17 updates to look out for And there’s more! iOS 17 has lots going on behind the scenes to make your mobile life better: New emojis and stickers. You can now turn emojis into stickers and resize them. You can also turn subjects from photos into stickers, and turn live animated photos into live stickers. Accurate autocorrect.. Apple says autocorrect is now more accurate than ever, with machine learning adapting to your writing style and suggesting predictions that you actually need. Faster Messages. Search in Messages has been improved with filters that let you add terms to narrow down the results. You can now also jump straight to the first unread message in a group chat, and swipe to reply on any message. New ringtones. There are 24 new ringtones to choose from, and lots of new text tones too. You’ll find them in settings, under ‘Sounds & Haptics’. Better browsing. Search in Safari will be more responsive, with suggestions that are more relevant than they were in the past. You can separate your work browsing from your personal browsing, and even choose a new default search engine. Which iPhones Support iOS 17? iOS 17 is compatible with iPhone XR/iPhone XS and later. That means if you’ve got one of the following iPhones, you can update to iOS 17. iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max. iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro, iPhone 14 Pro Max. iPhone 13, iPhone 13 mini, iPhone 13 Pro, iPhone 13 Pro Max. iPhone 12, iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12 Pro, iPhone 12 Pro Max. iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, iPhone 11 Pro Max. iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max. iPhone XR. iPhone SE (2nd gen or later). iOS 17 isn’t available for older phones including iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X. So, if you’ve got one of the iPhones mentioned above, you can update right now. We always recommend that you fully backup your iPhone before updating operation system. Design and display Both phones are super stylish, with that classic Google design and smooth curves. The Pixel 8 has a satin finish that feels natural to hold, while the Pixel 8 Pro has a soft, silky matte glass finish and highly polished camera bar. Google announced that its using 100% recycled aluminium on these new phones, and all the packaging is now completely free of plastic. The Actua display is a Google first, and it looks spectacular. Even in direct sunlight, images look incredibly true to life. If you’re simply browsing a few webpages, the refresh rate will drop right down. Upgraded cameras The Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro have had a serious camera upgrade, with videos being a real highlight - huge improvements have been made to auto-focus, low-light performance, dynamic range, shadows and skin tone accuracy. So, no more dodgy blinking! Magic Editor gives you the power to select different objects in your photo and drag them to where you want. For example, if there’s too much space in the middle of your shot, you can bring everything closer together. Audio Magic Eraser makes videos sound even better. It uses Google AI to reduce annoying background sounds, leaving just the things you actually want to hear. If there’s a dog barking in the background of a happy birthday singalong, you can shush it right down. Serious power The Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro will both be powered by the new Tensor G3. It’s the most powerful chip that’s ever been in a Pixel, and has been custom designed with Google AI to make your life easier. For example, your Pixel instantly knows which language you’re speaking and can even switch between different languages. There’s also an option to have webpages read out loud – a great option if you’re taking the dog for a walk and don’t have your hands free to scroll. Battery, charging & storage Battery life just keeps getting better. Both Pixels have an ‘Adaptive Battery’ that can last over 24 hours, and ‘Extreme Battery Saver’ mode can give you up to 72 hours of power. That’s plenty of room for loads of your favourite apps, games, videos, photos and music. Other cool new features To reduce dodgy spam calls, these new Pixels come with an AI-powered Call Screen featuret. The epic evolution of gaming!Blog
From Pong to PUBG: the epic evolution of gaming Get ready to power up, because September 12th is National Video Games Day—the ultimate celebration for all things gaming. Once upon a time, gaming was just for a small clique of computer programmers. Now the gaming industry makes more money than the music and movie industries combined. Wow! So, grab your snacks and buckle up as we dive into the incredible journey of how video games and gaming tech have evolved over the years. And (since we’re all about phones) let's not forget the mind-blowing rise of mobile gaming from the days of Snake to the next-level phenomenon we see today. Level 1: Pixel pioneers Way back in the day, when dinosaurs roame d the Earth (or so it feels), video games were all about pixels and beeps. We're talking about classics like Pong and Space Invaders. For the time, these games were like magic in a box - where two rectangles bouncing a ball back and forth could keep us entertained for hours. Level 2: Console craze Fast forward a bit, and boom, we hit the era of the home console. Remember the original Nintendo Entertainment System (NES)? Mario and Luigi became household names, and we were all battling over who got to be player one. Consoles brought the gaming arcade experience to our front rooms. And then the console wars kicked off in playgrounds across the country – which was better: Nintendo or Sega? These days it’s PlayStation vs Xbox, but the rivalry is just as passionate. Every generation brought better graphics, bigger games and more immersive storytelling. Level 3: Games go 3D 2D platforming brought us plenty of classics, but the leap to 3D was a real gamechanger. Super Mario 64 made our jaws drop with its 3D world, and suddenly we were exploring entire worlds instead of just jumping over pits. Grand Theft Auto went from top-down 2D action to navigating city streets. And who could forget the thrills of adventures like PlayStation's Metal Gear Solid and Final Fantasy VII? Level 4: Mobile marvels Gamers of a certain generation will remember Nokia’s classic game Snake. Controlling a snake sliding around eating pixels may not sound like much, but it was a worldwide phenomenon. And then there were giants like Tetris that made the jump from home PC to handheld. Level 5: Smartphones enter the game With the launch of the iPhone in 2007, more and more people had powerful computers in their pockets. And that meant the ability to run bigger and better games. Suddenly, our phones weren't just for calls and texts—they were our gaming consoles too. Angry Birds stormed in and became the face of mobile gaming's new era. Tapping and swiping our screens to slingshot birds? Yep, we were officially living in the future. Mobile games have made gaming easier to start than ever – with millions of free-to-download games available at the touch of a screen. Whether iOS or Android, 3 billion gamers use mobile devices, making it the world’s most popular way to play. Level 6: Online play Although playing online has been around for a while, faster internet speeds and more online devices have turned it into an online juggernaut. Now battle royale games like Fortnite and PUBG have millions of players and can be played on everything from console to mobile. So, more people than ever are parachuting onto islands, scavenging for gear and duking it out to be the last one standing. Level 7: Virtual Reality Today, we're living in the future we used to dream about. VR has been around for a while, but it’s never felt more real. Games like No Man’s Sky VR and Among Us have us exploring fantastical worlds and unravelling mysteries with friends from all over the globe. Augmented Reality (AR) has made our towns and cities a playgrounf to catch Pokemon! AR and VR are blurring the lines between the digital and physical worlds – and headsets from the likes of Meta and PlayStation are bringing VR adventures home. It’s amazing how far gaming has come. And with such a huge evolution in such a small time, from the humble beginnings of Pong to the immersive worlds of AR and VR. It’s mind-blowing to imagine what could be next! And with the rise of more powerful smart phones, it seems certain that we’ll be able to play whatever we want anywhere we want. So, whether you fire up Candy Crush or launch into Starfield, let’s celebrate National Video Games Day with hours of fun and adventure. Keep gaming! Giveaway Time! This month we’re giving you the chance to win an £100 Currys gift card! To enter, all you need to do is tell us what’s your favourite video, mobile or board game! Simply type your response below and click send. We’ll select one random winner and we’ll message them via direct message here on the Community. The giveaway will be closed for entries at 23.59 (BST) on 20th September 2023. Good luck!

Your Guide to seamless connectivity this Autumn and Winter.Blog
As autumn leaves start to fall and winter whispers through the breeze, the season calls for a cosy retreat indoors away from the chill and drizzle. These colder months promise warm tea, snuggly blankets, and more time in the comfort of our homes. However, it also brings along the responsibility of ensuring that we stay connected with our family, friends, and colleagues as we hunker down indoors. In this digital age, staying connected is synonymous with a reliable mobile network. In this article, we’ll provide you with tips to ensure a seamless connection over the chilly season. Wi-Fi Calling: Your Best Friend Indoors With the shift indoors, relying solely on mobile networks might not be the best option. Walls can sometimes obstruct network signals, but Wi-Fi calling can come to your rescue. iD Mobile’s Wi-Fi calling feature allows you to make and receive calls over a Wi-Fi network, bypassing any mobile network issues that you might be facing. It’s seamless, efficient, and ensures that you stay connected no matter where you are in the house. Read more about Wi-Fi Calling Embrace the Speed of 5G The 5G revolution is here and it’s making connectivity faster and smoother than ever. With speeds that are significantly faster than 4G, 5G ensures that you can work from home, stream your favourite shows, and video call your loved ones without any hiccups. iD Mobile’s 5G coverage is expanding across the UK, and comes as a standard on all iD Mobile plans. Furthermore, our 5G network has recently been awarded ‘Fastest 5G’ network by Ookla. Find out more about 5G on iD Mobile. Messaging and Calling Apps Applications like WhatsApp have made staying connected so much easier and cost-effective. They not only allow messaging but also voice and video calls over the internet. Leveraging these apps can help you stay in touch without worrying about mobile network issues or extra charges. They also come with features like group calls, making virtual hangouts with friends or family meetings a breeze. Update Your Software Keeping your device’s software up to date is crucial for its performance and connectivity. Software updates often come with network performance improvements which can be especially beneficial during the indoor months. Indoor Mobile Network Troubleshooting If you’re facing network issues indoors, a few simple steps can help improve the situation: Location: Sometimes, moving closer to a window can improve mobile signal. Wi-Fi Calling: As mentioned above, Wi-Fi calling comes with all iD Mobile plans, all you need is a Wi-Fi calling compatible device, and ensure Wi-Fi calling is enabled on your device, so it automatically switches to Wi-Fi when mobile signal is weak. Network Reset:Resetting network settings on your device can sometimes solve persistent network problems.

All of the new iPhone 15 models now have the Dynamic Island that first appeared on the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. This pill-shaped cut-out at the top of the display now gives you better visibility of activities and alerts, and can even change shape and size to display the information you need. The iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro both have 6.1-inch displays, while the iPhone 15 Plus and iPhone 15 Pro Max boast larger 6.7-inch displays. As usual, all four iPhone 15 models will have super-sharp and vivid OLED screens. The iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max will also feature ProMotion 120Hz, a crisp refresh rate that makes everything onscreen look and feel incredibly smooth. Advanced camera action The iPhone 15 and 15 Plus models come with two cameras on the back, while the Pro and Pro Max models have three cameras. There’s a new 48MP sensor onboard, capable of capturing impressive amount of detail. It also improves Night Mode, giving you sharper images in low light conditions. A new Smart HDR mode helps improve dynamic range too, so when you view your photos on your phone’s display, you’ll be able to see brighter highlights and deeper shadows. The iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max get all of the new camera features above, plus a few more. The iPhone 15 Pro has a 3xTelephoto camera, and the iPhone 15 Pro Max has the longest optical zoom on any iPhone ever - 5x at 120 mm. These new features give you the power to shoot great close-ups, wildlife photos, and far-off action. And for the first time on any iPhone, you can take portraits without having to switch to Portrait mode. Simply tap to focus on a shot and the iPhone automatically stores all the depth information you need to turn it into a stunning portrait when you edit it later on. Serious power Apple’s new A17 Pro chip will run the show on iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Ultra. This new and improved chip includes the biggest GPU redesign in Apple’s history, making it up to 20% faster, while improving performance and energy efficiency. Elsewhere, the new CPU is up to 10 percent faster, and the Neural Engine is now up to 2x faster while powering features like autocorrect. Meanwhile, the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus are both powered by the same A16 Bionic chip as the iPhone 14 Pro. It’s a chip perfectly suited for advanced photography and intense gaming sessions, and delivers incredible performance without using too much power. USB-C is here USB-C charging is now on all iPhone 15 models. Apple says this offers convenient new ways to charge and stay connected while traveling. The USB ‑ C connector is a universally accepted standard for charging and transferring data, so you’ll be able to use the same cable to charge other Apple devices like MacBooks, iPads, and the updated AirPods Pro (2nd generation). You can also charge your AirPods or Apple Watch directly from any iPhone 15 with the USB ‑ C connector. All the storage you need iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus come with 128GB, 256GB or 512GB storage options. That’s plenty of room for lots of apps, games and files. iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max also have a fourth storage option of 1TB (1000GB). That’s more than most laptops currently have, giving you enough space for around 250 HD movies. Where can I order an iPhone 15? You can now buy the iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro or iPhone 15 Pro Max on a plan that gives you all the flexibility and control you need. You can enjoy ultra-fast 5G coverage, roll over unused data, cap your out-of-plan charges, and stay right on top of your expenses with the handy iD Mobile app.

Beat those post-holiday and cold weather blues!Blog
Summer holidays are great. Returning and going back to work – not so great. As soon as you’re on that rainy Monday morning commute, it can seem like you’ve never been away. Even if you didn’t go abroad on holiday, the change from sunshine to cloudy with a chance of drizzle is enough to get you down. So, we’ve put together some advice to help you beat those after-sun blues! We’ll start with some top post-holiday tips, and follow that up with advice on how we can all keep a positive attitude in the face of bad old British weather. Beat the post-holiday blues 1. Get organised After a long, lazy holiday, that alarm on your first morning back can be tough. So, make things easy on yourself with a little planning the night before. Choose what you’re going to wear, get your bag ready for work, and find your security pass. Use your smartphone to create a checklist of what you’ll need to prioritise on that important first week back to work. There are some great apps like like Evernote Wunderlist or Trello that can help with this kind of prep and planning. 2. Make time for yourself Don’t rush headlong into the pile of work waiting for you. Pace yourself and make sure you take regular breaks to give yourself a chance to take stock and remain calm. Be sure to take proper lunch breaks away from your desk and, if possible, leave the office for a breath of fresh air. If you need a little help to stay calm, take a look at de-stressing apps like like Calm or Headspace. 3. Now hear this! Stay positive and inspired by listening to some motivational podcasts like Ted Talks or some Spotify motivational playlists on your way to work. Better still, put together your own playlist of your fave inspirational, upbeat tunes as the soundtrack to your commute. 4. Read all about it… Load up your tablet or Kindle with some inspirational reads for your commute to work or for a quick motivator on your lunch break. There’s a whole world of eBooks out there just waiting to be discovered! 5. Stay active and eat well You’re bound to be tired coming back to work after a relaxing holiday, especially if you’ve had a long journey home through different time zones. So it’s really important to eat well and stay hydrated. Check out healthy eating apps and sites like Better Health Better Families and MyFitnessPal and for a little exercise motivation, take a look at Map My Walk, Runkeeper or Fitbit. 6. Keep the holiday memories alive A great holiday is all about great experiences, and that can be a delicious dish you’ve eaten or a favourite activity. And just because you’ve got back home, doesn’t mean you have to leave those experiences behind. Had an amazing Italian meal in Rome? Check to see if there are any great Italian places in your area. Or maybe you can use a takeaway app to have it delivered to your door. Loved rock climbing in Thailand? Maybe an indoor climbing wall will scratch that itch. 7. It’s good to talk Take time to check in with your colleagues and get up to speed on what you missed while you were away. Catch-up with a friend over coffee and chat about your holiday. Simply talking to someone and having a laugh can help you settle in smoothly to your old routine. Adjust to weather that’s not so hot Dealing with the abrupt shift from hot sunny days to cooler temperatures can be quite a challenge, so here are some tips to help you keep upbeat when the clouds come out. 1. Layer up The key to staying comfortable during changing weather is mastering the art of layering. Start with a light, breathable base layer – think a comfy cotton tee or a lightweight sweater. Then, add a slightly thicker layer like a cardigan or a jacket that can easily be removed if the sun decides to make a surprise appearance. 2. Check the forecast Your phone is your friend when it comes to dealing with the ever-changing weather. Download a decent weather app for up-to-the-minute forecasts and notifications about sudden changes. This way, you'll always be one step ahead of the weather's surprises. 3. Weatherproof your plans Planning a picnic? Going for a hike? Then be ready to adapt, even if you’re happy with the forecast. Pack a waterproof picnic blanket or a light raincoat just in case. Expect the best, be prepared for the worst. It’s what enjoying the outdoors is all about. 4. Mind your skin Okay, so the sun isn't blazing like you’re still abroad - but that doesn't mean you should ditch the sunscreen. Cooler temperatures can be deceiving, and UV rays are still a thing. So if it’s still fairy sunny, use a moisturiser with built-in sun protection to keep your skin happy and healthy. 5. Embrace the unpredictability Last but not least. Let’s refuse to let the weather beat us! Yes, it’s going to be difficult. But remember, every weather change is an opportunity for a new adventure. Whether you're on a sun-flecked forest walk or looking at the reflections in park puddles, try to look for beauty in unexpected moments. After all, it's the unpredictability that adds a touch of magic to our everyday lives. Do you have any tips for dealing with the end of summer and a return to rainy days? We’d love to hear them, so feel free to share your thoughts below!

Get perfect pics this autumn!Blog
Autumn is here, and that means long country walks, cosy meals and colourful scenery all around. It might be getting a little cooler, but there’s nothing like a wander through nature to cure those post-summer blues. Whether it’s the natural light shining through tree branches, or red and yellow leaves that make an irresistible picture, who could blame you for stopping to capture it all on your phone camera? While most flagship phones will let you snap away automatically and get great results, there are a few things you can do to take your pics to the next level. When it comes to shooting nature on your phone, your phone will have some neat tricks to nail photos and videos. Here are a few things you can do to get that instantly Instagrammable shot: 1.The Rule of Thirds If you’re new to photography, there’s a quick hack that will help you get photos that draws the eye - that’s the Rule of Thirds. It’s a principle that’s been known about for hundreds of years – and it’s all about composing your pic in the way that makes it visually interesting. In your phone’s camera app, you should be able to place a grid over your display in the settings. This will help you get the composition of your photo just right. You’ll want to make sure that objects of interest in your photo are either on the lines, or where two lines meet. If it’s a landscape shot, make sure that the horizon is on or near a horizontal line. You’ll be amazed what this simple tweak to the composition will do for your autumn photos. 2.Try HDR mode + tripod If your phone’s camera app has an HDR mode, make the most of it! If you’re not a photography whizz, it can be tricky to get the lighting spot on in your photos. With HDR mode, you don’t have to worry about tweaking the settings. Your camera will shoot three photos with different exposure levels, and combine them to create a single photo that highlights all the colours and detail that make up that striking autumn scene. Because HDR mode shoots three photos, the shutter speed takes a little longer, so you’ll have to hold the phone steady. Or for seriously pro-looking shots, add a smartphone tripod to your kit bag. 3.Pick a lens Many smartphones have more than one camera, but how many times have you manually switched between them? Some lenses are better at capturing certain shots than others, but for expansive landscapes, if you’ve got a wide-angle camera on the back of your phone, that’s the one to go for. Your wide-angle lens lets you capture a wider field of view. That means you can fit more of the scenery around you into the frame, so no need to keep taking steps back. The wide-angle does a good job of showing depth and keeping the distance between objects realistic, like trees, for example. If you’ve got an Ultra-Wide lens as well, try that out too. You’ll be able to get some truly stunning autumn shots, but keep in mind the ultra-wide angle means you’re more likely to lose that perception of distance between objects in the picture. 4.No flash photography It’s the natural colours that make autumn such a photogenic season. Using the flash causes those colours to look a little washed out, so try it without and see how you get on. If you need more light in your photos, try increasing the exposure in your camera app’s setting. This lets in more natural light and should offer much better results. If you’re feeling confident, switch to Pro mode and take a few photos with different exposure levels and shutter speeds to see what works best for your scene. 5.Delete photo bombers! Nothing ruins the magic of an Autumn picture like unwanted visitors popping up in the background. Fortunately, there are some pretty nifty techie tricks that can help you remove them. Take Google’s Magic Eraser for instance. Thanks to the wonders of AI you can edit your picture, select Magic Eraser and then just delete the intruder. And it’s not just for Google phones – the tool is now available on both Android and Apple phones . Pretty cool! Check out these apps to get that winning shot For autumn photography that really stands out, there are a few apps you can try. A big part of getting great nature shots is being ready at the right moment. With apps like LightTrac ( iOS ) and Sun Position ( Android ), you’ll know when’s best to catch that gorgeous autumn scene wherever you are. Not only will they give accurate sunrise and sunset times, but they’ll also show you the solar and lunar paths pretty accurately, too. So, you can find the perfect spot and capture the perfect interplay of natural light and shadows. Or, if you get more than one outstanding photo on your walk and can’t decide which one to share, add them to a collage and share them all! Collage Maker ( iOS , Android ) lets you add up to 18 images to a single frame, letting you showcase all your stunning autumn photos in one. There are over 100 layouts to choose from, so you’re able to get really creative with it. Those are just a few of the things your phone can do to take your autumn photography up a notch. What works for you? Let us know below.

Smart home saving hacks.Blog
Autumns approaching, and you know what that means—keeping cosy and warm becomes a priority. But it can also mean bigger bills. Smart home tech isn't just about cool gadgets you can show off. It's your secret weapon for tackling those soaring winter bills while keeping your home toasty and inviting. From nifty ways to manage heating to turning your lights into energy-saving champs, smart home technology lets you take charge and save some serious cash too. With gadgets like smart thermostats and energy-efficient light bulbs, here are some smart home ideas to help you tackle winter bills. Turn up the smart thermostat When the chill sets in, heating can go through the roof. But don't sweat, smart thermostats are here to help. Traditional thermostats only let you set timers – but it’s a pain to adjust these and so you’re often heating the house when you don’t need to. Learning thermostats get used to your heating preferences and help you stay warm without breaking the bank. Set heating events during the day so you’re only heating the rooms you’re using. Newer generation thermostats also let you control hot water too. You can even link up your geolocation so when you’re on the way home, you’ll get an alert reminding you to turn the heating on so things are nice and cosy when you step through the door. Brands like Google Nest and Hive are pros at keeping an eye on the weather and adjusting the temp so it’s just right. You'll be snug as a bug without sweating over your bills. Switch to smart lights Winter means fewer daylight hours, and that means more lights on. LED smart bulbs not only save energy but also let you play with brightness and colours. Some even mimic natural light patterns, so you can give those artificial lights a break during the day. But that's not all—smart lighting teams up with motion sensors and geo-fencing. They know when to shine and when to power down. So, you won’t be lighting places in your house that don’t need it. Forgot to turn off the lights when you’ve gone to bed? Set up routines that know when to power everything down or turn off the kitchen lights without leaving your cosy bed. Energy saving smart appliances Since you’ll be more indoors, you’ll be using more of everything – whether that’s for fave Christmas movies on your TV or tumble drying your clothes. But smart appliances can be more energy efficient. Washing machines, dishwashers and fridges have all gone smart, and they're here to help you save. Smart washers sense the load size of your clothes, detect how dirty they are and adjust water levels and temperature accordingly. Smart fridges tweak cooling levels based on how full your fridge is and the external temperature. Smart ovens are split up into heating zones, so can be way more efficient than heating your whole oven. Plus, these smart marvels connect to Wi-Fi, so you can control them from your couch. Start a load of laundry during those off-peak hours when energy rates are lower and watch your winter bills drop. Smart security means you’re safe and sound As nights get longer, security becomes a top concern. But smart security systems do more than just guard your home. Motion sensors, doorbell cameras and smart security cameras not only keep unwanted visitors away. Unlike traditional cameras, they’ll only film activity when they detect intruders – so are more energy efficient. You can check who’s at door from your phone and even talk to delivery people when you’re not at home. Wouldn’t want to miss those Christmas prezzies! The world of smart home tech is your secret weapon for conquering those winter costs and staying cosy. From heating hacks to lighting magic, these gadgets are all about helping you save money in the long run. As winter takes hold, smart home technology can help you create a warm, smart haven that adapts to match you. Do you have smart home tech at home? What’s the one thing that has been a real game changer? Share your smart home hacks below…

Virtual reality vs. augmented reality vs. mixed reality.Blog
Virtual reality. Augmented reality. Mixed reality. That’s a whole lot of reality to get your head around. And with Apple’s recent announcement of the Vision Pro, this tech is only going to get bigger and better. But what’s the difference between the three? And what kind of cool tech is out there at the moment to try out? We’ve got the full lowdown… Virtual reality Some people will argue that this is the most immersive of the three. VR fully replaces your view – with a headset that goes over your eyes - putting you slap bang in the middle of a computer-generated space. And you can explore and interact with this 3D environment like you’re really there. Video games, live concerts, education, and sport are just some of the sectors taking full advantage of the tech. If you’re gaming, you literally become the character. You’ll see and hear exactly what they do, making the experience way more engaging and hands-on. Sony’s PlayStation VR2 is a good place to start, with loads of different games to get stuck into. Whether it’s a high-octane racer that puts you in the driving seat, or a bone chilling horror. Those jump scares will definitely hit different in VR, that’s for sure! Sports fans get in on the action too. With the Meta Quest 2 you can watch the big match like you’re really there. VR Premier League matches give you a front row seat in Sky’s virtual stadium. Get real time analysis, switch camera angles to catch every shot and tackle, or just enjoy the game with your mates. Augmented reality AR is like something out of a sci-fi movie. Using your phone – or some stylish smart glasses – augmented reality overlays what you can see in real life with computer-generated info. It’s the real world, just with extra digital layers. Pokémon GO – which took the world by storm when it launched (and is still going strong) – is probably the most popular example out there. Different kinds of Pokémon are sat on a map of the area you’re in. Then, when you get to that spot, you use the camera on your phone to see them on your screen in the real world. And all you’ve got to do next is catch them! Easier said than done… Other companies and brands use it for more practical reasons too. Airlines like easyJet have a handy augmented reality tool in their app. Combined with your smartphone camera, you can check whether your hand luggage is small enough to fit under the seat on the plane. Which can definitely save you an awkward moment at the airport later on. Shoe giants Adidas use AR in their app as well. For their classic footwear, you can get an even better look at every detail before you buy. Just point your camera at a flat surface, and you can spin, zoom, and flip the shoe to your hearts content. Exactly like if it was really in front of you in the shop. And it goes even further. Buying trainers can be a drag. But with certain running shoes, you can virtually try them on. Aim your phone at your feet and the augmented models will appear. So, you don’t even have to leave the house! Mixed reality MR is a blend of digital and real-world elements. It takes ideas from augmented reality and virtual reality, mashing them together into one cutting-edge whole. Worn around your eyes, these head-mounted displays are equipped with cameras. And these cameras are constantly mapping the space you’re in, shooting digital assets into physical spots in front of you. Which, as you can imagine, is especially cool for gaming. Characters in the game you’re playing can stroll about the room you’re in, making your gaming sessions really come to life. They’re also used more and more now in the world of work too. Designers, artists, architects, and other creatives sometimes use mixed reality to show off their projects. Thinking about adding an extension to your house? An architect might show you around their vision of the final build with the help of an MR headset. Pretty cool. The recently announced Apple Vision Pro is the biggest step forward for mixed reality so far. You’ll navigate entertainment, apps and docs using just your voice, hands, and eyes. Project your favourite shows onto the wall in front of you. Sit at the kitchen table while you work – no laptop required. Or video call with the family, with everyone from dad to your nan appearing as life-size tiles in your room. You’ll have to wait a little while to get your hands on it though. It doesn’t launch until 2024. Giveaway time! This month, we’re giving one lucky winner the chance to win a SONOS Roam Portable Speaker. All you need to do is tell us where you’d go if you could travel anywhere with the help of virtual reality. Your favourite holiday spot? Visit a loved one? The depths of space? For your chance to win, simply enter your response below and click reply! Please note, you’ll need to be registered on the iD Community to enter. We’ll select one random winner and we’ll message them via direct message here on the Community. Good Luck!

Use your phone for a hassle-free paperless holiday.Blog
Everything else is slowly going paperless, so why not streamline your holidays too? Before you arrive and can start relaxing, you have the stress of getting there. Nobody wants to lug around a folder full of printouts and travel docs - tickets, boarding passes, passport copies, itineraries. It’s just another thing at risk of being forgotten or left behind. Save yourself the hassle and do it all on your phone. Most of us don’t go anywhere without our phones, so you might as well keep everything in one digital place and go paperless. It’s better for trees and it’s easier for you. Everyone wins! Here are some top tips for how to nail your paperless getaway. Tickets and boarding passes It’s a lot harder to leave paperless tickets at home by mistake. Better yet, adding your flight tickets or boarding passes to your phone is really straightforward. It keeps them just one or two taps away, saving you plenty of hassle when checking in. Providing you’re using a participating airline, you can save your ticket to Google Pay as soon as you’ve bought the tickets. Then all you need to do is open the Google Pay app, open your wallet and show the barcode or QR code when you travel. If you’re on a Google Pixel phone, you can actually add a boarding pass just by screenshotting it. Adding tickets to your iPhone or Samsung wallets is equally straightforward. You can either add them directly from the airline’s app or from an email. Apps for lounge access Why not treat yourself when you’re travelling? Go ahead, you’ve earned it. Getting into a lounge before your flight is like starting your holidays even earlier. Leave behind the usual chaos, put your feet up in style and travel like a VIP. The tricky part is knowing how to get in. For Apple users, it’s even easier to access airport lounges. The LoungeBuddy app uses your phone’s location info to display your available lounge options. Some you can pay to enter while others are free when you own a certain credit card. Airline apps Having the app for the airline you’re flying with is another way to make sure things go smoothly – as you get all of your important flight information in one place. It beats sifting through a huge folder of travel documents to find out things like check-in and departure times and gate numbers. Apps will also keep you up-to-date about real-time delays, gate changes and more. If you’re yet to book a trip, airline apps will let you book your flights directly. Even better, they’ll let you filter your searches to find the cheapest flights and help frequent flyers access perks and bonuses too. Paying with your phone Going paperless also means leaving the wallet behind. Your bank card is another thing that you can keep stored on your phone, just like your boarding passes. That means having all your cards in one handy wallet. Just make sure the country you’re visiting supports contactless payments. Most destinations popular with tourists will offer contactless payments, but you should always take a credit card with you in case of emergencies. Also, it’s a good idea to let your bank know that you’re heading overseas – just so you can keep using your card without interruptions. Navigation Exploring is one of the best parts of going on holiday but getting lost when you don’t speak the language can be tricky. It’s always a good idea to have some help with navigation. This list of free navigation apps should come in handy for any trip you’ve got planned. Whether you’re trekking on-foot or renting a car and hitting the road, Google Maps or Waze will keep you on the right track. They’ll give you directions wherever you are in the world. If you’re going somewhere without mobile data, you can even download the maps ahead of time and access them offline. Giveaway Time! To enter, simply tell us where your favourite holiday destination is, and if you fancy making us all super jealous, share your best holiday snaps too! Comment with or without a photo, and you're in the draw. Simply write your response below and click reply. The closing date for entries is 23.59 (BST) on 18th August 2023. Good luck!
