Win a Google Pixel 10 Pro in our Made by Google recap!Blog
The Made by Google event has just wrapped up for another year, and what a show it was! The team in California has been busy, and as we expected, they showed off the brand-new Google Pixel 10 family. The big story this year is definitely all the clever AI features packed inside to make life that little bit easier. To celebrate, we're giving one lucky iD Community member the chance to win a Google Pixel 10 Pro! Stick with us as we run through the new gear, and we’ll tell you how to enter at the end. Google Pixel 10. First up is the Pixel 10. This is the new foundation of the range, and it’s packed with some great stuff for everyday use. The camera system gets a real boost this year. For the first time on the standard model, it now features a proper 5x telephoto lens – a big step up from the digital zoom on the Pixel 8. It means you can get those really crisp, close-up shots without having to move an inch. The AI inside is smarter too. A new feature called Magic Cue tries to guess what you need before you do, offering helpful shortcuts. Another clever touch is the new Camera Coach, which gives you little tips on-screen to help you line up the perfect photo. It’s all about helping you get the best shot without needing to be a pro. The whole experience is powered by the new Tensor G5 chip and feels super responsive. Check out the Google Pixel 10 here Google Pixel 10 Pro and Pro XL. If you're serious about your phone photography, this is where things get really exciting. The Pixel 10 Pro and the larger Pro XL take the camera to another level. The zoom capability is where you see a massive difference; it has been pushed all the way to 100x, which is a huge leap forward from the 30x on the Pixel 8 Pro, letting you capture details from ridiculously far away. Video also gets some love with a feature called Video Boost, which helps you get super-steady footage, even when you’re moving about. The Pro models have an even brighter screen, making it much easier to see what you're doing on those rare sunny days here in the UK. They also have some exclusive AI tricks, like being able to create a short video clip just from a text description. Check out the Google Pixel 10 Pro and the Pixel 10 Pro XL here. Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold. And for those who want something a bit different, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold is back with some key improvements. It’s a more refined and robust design this time around. A key improvement on the original Pixel Fold is that this new version is properly IP68 water and dust resistant, which is a welcome addition for peace of mind in daily use. It works just like before: a normal-sized phone on the outside that opens up into a lovely big 8-inch tablet screen. This makes it a real productivity tool, perfect for watching videos or getting a bit of work done with two apps running side-by-side. Available 9th October. And There’s More… Google also showed off the new Pixel Watch 4. The screen is bigger and much brighter, and the battery life has had a welcome boost, so you'll spend less time charging it. It's more than just a watch; it's a proper health and fitness companion, with deep Fitbit integration and new safety features. And finally, for music lovers, they announced the Pixel Buds 2a. The big news here is that Active Noise Cancellation has finally come to the more affordable A-series earbuds. This is a real game-changer for commuting or working in a busy café, letting you properly immerse yourself in your music or podcasts. Win a Google Pixel 10 Pro! Now for the exciting part. To be in with a chance of winning a Google Pixel 10 Pro, simply reply to this article with your answer to the following question: Why would you like to win a Pixel 10 Pro? We’ll randomly select one winner from the replies. Entries close at 23:59 on 15th September 2025, and we'll announce the lucky iD Community winner shortly after. We’ll notify the winner by direct message here on the Community, so please keep an eye on your inbox. Good luck!

Our step-by-step guide for when your phone is lost or stolen.Blog
Losing your phone feels like losing your lifeline. But knowing what to do next can make a massive difference. Whether it’s slipped out of your pocket on the bus or been swiped from a table at a café, the panic is real. Don’t worry though. There are clear steps you can take to protect your data, stop your phone being misused and get back up and running as fast as possible. Lock and locate your device immediately. The first thing to do is to track your phone. Both Apple and Android devices come with built-in tools that’ll help you locate, lock or even erase your phone remotely. If you’re using an iPhone, head to Find My iPhone. For Android users, Find My Device is your go-to. These features let you see your phone’s location on a map, lock it down and display a message on screen – like a contact number or ‘this phone is lost’. If things look serious you could also wipe your data remotely to protect your privacy. If you didn’t have location tracking turned on, don’t panic. You can still secure your accounts and contact your network provider. And for the future, make sure you switch these features on and keep your location services enabled too. You’ll appreciate it later on if something bad happens. Report the loss to iD Mobile. Once you’ve tried to locate your phone, your next move is to secure your SIM card with us. This is a crucial step. By suspending your SIM, you instantly block anyone from making calls, sending texts, or using your data. It’s the single best way to protect yourself from unexpected charges, especially if you think your phone has been stolen. We can also get a replacement SIM sent out to you, and don’t worry – you’ll keep your existing number, making it much easier to get back online. The quickest and simplest way to do all of this is through the iD Mobile app. Acting fast here will minimise any disruption and keep your account secure while you take the next steps. Report the theft to the police. If you’re confident your phone was stolen, you need to report it to the police. You’ll be given a crime reference number – which might be needed later for any insurance claims or if your network provider asks for proof of theft. You can usually file a report online or by calling 101, the non-emergency police number. Even if you’re not sure whether it was stolen or just lost, reporting it can be helpful. Especially if you find out fraudulent activity has been linked to your device. Secure your online accounts. Your phone is more than just a gadget. Most of us have our whole digital life on there. That’s why it’s crucial to secure your online accounts as soon as possible. Start by changing the passwords on your email, banking apps, social media, and any other sites or services you use on the reg. Switch on two-factor authentication (2FA) when you can as well. This adds an extra layer of protection by requiring a second form of verification, like a code sent to your email or another device. If your phone supports biometric login (like fingerprint or face recognition), that’s great – but don’t rely on it alone. Oh, and avoid reusing passwords too. If someone guesses it, they could get access to all your other accounts too! Check your insurance or protection plan. If you’ve got phone insurance, now’s the time to dig out the details. You might also be covered through your bank, network provider, or the retailer where you bought your phone – like Currys. Check what’s included in your policy too. Does it cover theft, loss or accidental damage? What’s the process like for making a claim? It’s all worth finding out. You’ll likely need your crime reference number and proof of purchase, so get those docs together early. If you’re not covered, think about getting protection for the future. It can save you a lot of stress – and money – if something goes wrong again. Prevent future issues. Once you’ve dealt with the immediate situation, you’ll want to take some steps to protect yourself going forward. Start by using biometric security features like fingerprint or face recognition and make sure your PIN is strong and not easy to guess. It almost goes without saying, but don’t use 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 or your birthday! Avoid storing sensitive info, like banking details or passwords, in plain text on your phone’s notes app. Instead, use secure apps or password managers. And keep a record of your phone’s IMEI number (you’ll find it on the box or in your device settings), as this’ll help with tracking and reporting. Finally, don’t forget to back up your data regularly to the cloud. That way, you can restore it easily if your phone gets lost again. Restore and reconnect. Once you’ve secured your accounts and sorted your SIM, it’s time to get back online. Order a replacement SIM or device through iD Mobile and restore any important data from your cloud backups. Whether you use Google Drive or iCloud, having your photos, contacts and apps backed up means you won’t lose everything. Then reinstall your apps, log back in securely and take a few minutes to go over your security settings. If you need some help, head to the iD Mobile Help Hub – it’s packed with handy guides and support. Have your own tips or stories to share? Drop them in the comments down below!

How to turn your phone into your own portable Wi-Fi network.Blog
Ever found yourself needing to send a last-minute work email from your laptop on a train commute? Or how about trying to keep the kids entertained on a tablet on that long car journey? The struggle to find decent public Wi-Fi is real - and often frustrating. But here’s the good news: your smartphone has a hidden superpower. It’s called hotspotting (or tethering) and it lets you turn your phone into your very own portable Wi-Fi network. No café passwords. No dodgy connections. Just you, your phone and the freedom to get online wherever you have signal. Hotspotting lets you share your phone’s mobile data with other devices like your laptop or tablet. It’s perfect for working on the go, streaming on long trips or just staying connected when Wi-Fi isn’t an option. And the best part? You’re using the data plan you already have. No extra kit. No extra cost. How to set up your personal hotspot – step-by-step. It only takes a minute to turn your phone into a hotspot. Here’s how to do it on the most popular devices: If you’re using an iPhone: Go to Settings > Personal Hotspot. Toggle on Allow Others to Join. Make a note of the Wi-Fi password shown - this is what you’ll enter on your other device. For Samsung Galaxy users: Go to Settings > Connections. Tap Mobile Hotspot and Tethering. Tap Mobile Hotspot and toggle it on. You can also customise the network name and password here. For Google Pixel or other Android phones: Go to Settings > Network & internet. Tap Hotspot & tethering. Tap Wi-Fi hotspot and toggle it on. You’ll see options to change the hotspot name and password. Hotspotting is about to get even better. Here’s something cool worth knowing. Your hotspotting is about to get even better. VodafoneThree has activated an extra 5MHz slice of the 1800MHz spectrum for 4G. And if you’re not sure whether that’s a good thing or not, think of it this way. Spectrum bands are like different types of roads - this one’s a multi-lane motorway with great coverage and capacity. But what does that mean for you? It’s like adding an extra lane to a busy road during rush hour. More space means less congestion. So, whether you’re streaming, scrolling or hotspotting on your laptop, your connection should feel smoother and more responsive - especially during peak times. Quick heads-up: while this upgrade improves overall capacity, your actual experience can still vary depending on where you are and local conditions. Top tips for smart hotspotting. Hotspotting is brilliant - but it pays to be smart about it. Here’s how: Keep an eye on your data. Any device you connect will use your phone’s data allowance. If you’re streaming or downloading big files, check your usage in the iD Mobile app so you don’t get caught out. Save your battery. Hotspotting can drain your phone fast. Plug into a wall socket, laptop or portable power bank if you can. Stay secure. Always use a strong, unique password for your hotspot. You can set this in your phone’s hotspot settings to keep unwanted guests off your network. Ready to try it? You’re now ready to enjoy the freedom of your own personal, portable Wi-Fi. You’ll never have to hang around a coffee shop for free Wi-Fi again! Already use hotspots? Think there’s some tips we’ve missed out? Share your hotspot hot takes with the Community!

What to expect from the UK's national emergency alert test.Blog
On Sunday, 7 September 2025, at 3pm, the UK government will be running a nationwide test of the UK's Emergency Alerts system. This is to make sure the system, which is used to warn people when lives are in danger from things like extreme weather, is all working correctly. When the test happens, compatible mobile phones and tablets will make a loud, siren-like sound and vibrate for about 10 seconds. This will happen even if your device is on silent. A message will also pop up on the screen confirming that it's a test and that you don't need to take any action. How do I check Emergency Alerts are switched on? These alerts are an important tool for getting information to the public in an emergency, so it's a good idea to ensure they're switched on. They should be enabled by default, but it’s easy to check your settings to be sure: I’m using an iPhone: Open ‘Settings’. Tap ‘Notifications’. Scroll all the way to the bottom of the page. Under the "Emergency Alerts" section, make sure that "Extreme Alerts" and "Severe Alerts" are enabled. I’m using a Samsung Galaxy: Open ‘Settings’. Tap ‘Notifications’, then tap ‘Advanced settings’. Tap ‘Wireless emergency alerts’ from the list. Make sure the ‘Allow alerts’ toggle is on. Most other Android phones: Open ‘Settings’. Tap ‘Safety & emergency’. Tap ‘Wireless emergency alerts’. Check that the ‘Allow alerts’ option is toggled on. While it is possible to opt out of these alerts, the government advises keeping them switched on for your own safety. For more information, you can visit the official government website at gov.uk/alerts.

With the sun shining, there’s no better time to head out into nature and explore the UK's breathtaking trails. But there’s no need to stuff your backpack with massive OS (Ordnance Survey) maps. The most powerful navigation tool you own is already in your pocket! Forget the old-school maps and pricey GPS devices. Today’s smartphones, with the right apps, can be your guide, safety net, and personal trainer all rolled into one. We’ve rounded up the essential apps that turn your phone into the ultimate hiking companion. Plus, to help you get kitted out for your next trek, we're giving one lucky reader the chance to win a Garmin Venu 3s! Whether you're strolling through the Yorkshire Dales or summiting in Snowdonia, your trusty mobile will help you uncover new routes, stay safe, and track every step. Your guide to navigation apps. Different apps shine in different areas. Here’s our breakdown of the best navigation tools for UK walkers: OS Maps: This one’s the gold standard. It taps into the official, highly detailed Ordnance Survey maps trusted by hikers for generations. If precision and reliability are non-negotiable for you, OS Maps is your go-to. But if you’re going for a stroll around the local common, it’s probably overkill. AllTrails: Think of it as social media meets hiking. With thousands of user-submitted trails, reviews and photos, it’s perfect for discovering walks nearby - including hidden gems you won’t find on a printed map. When it comes to finding great walking routes, you can’t beat local knowledge! Komoot: Planning something longer or more adventurous? Komoot offers turn-by-turn voice navigation, making it feel like a sat-nav for footpaths. It’s brilliant for hikes, bike rides or weekend treks into the unknown. The most important app for your safety: What3Words. If you take one safety app with you, make it What3Words . This ingenious tool divides the world into tiny 3-metre squares and gives each one a unique three-word address. If you ever get lost, injured or stuck in a remote spot, you can use the app to share your location with emergency services - down to the exact metre. Fast, simple, potentially lifesaving. The Golden Rule: Always download offline maps. You can’t rely on mobile signal in the hills, valleys and remote paths of the UK. That’s why downloading your maps before you go is absolutely essential. That way, you’ll always have some means of finding your way if your mobile signal gives up on you. Apps like OS Maps , AllTrails , and Komoot let you save your route directly to your device. Offline access not only gives you peace of mind, but it's also a smart move for your mobile plan. It saves your data and extends your battery life by avoiding the constant search for a signal. Track your trek with a smartwatch. Want to know how far you've walked, how high you've climbed or even how many calories you’ve burned? Pairing your phone with a fitness tracker can turn an everyday walk into a full-on wellness activity. Wearables like the Apple Watch, Samsung Galaxy Watch or Fitbit sync with hiking apps and give you real-time updates on distance, elevation gain, heart rate and steps. Looking for a great deal on wearables? Check out the latest smartwatches at Currys. Giveaway time! With a few key apps - like OS Maps for navigation, What3Words for safety and the golden rule of downloading offline maps - your phone becomes the only gadget you’ll need for a successful day out on the trail. From fake jobs to AI voices the new scams to watch out for.Blog
Think you’re savvy enough to spot most scams? Those “you’ve won the lottery!” emails have always been easy to mark as junk. But today’s scams are a lot more sophisticated and convincing, with fraudsters getting extra creative. They’re even trying to steal data by tapping into our smartphones. The good news? You don’t need to panic. That’s because in this guide, we’ll walk you through the latest mobile scams — from fake job offers to AI-powered deepfakes. You’ll learn how they work, the warning signs to watch for, and ways to keep your phone and personal details safe. The “you’ve got the job” scam. Job hunting is stressful enough, so don’t let scammers make it worse. They’re now targeting job seekers on platforms like LinkedIn and Indeed, by posing as recruiters offering dream roles with great pay and flexible hours. How this scam works: You might get a text, WhatsApp message, or even a call from someone claiming to represent a company. They’ll propose a job that sounds perfect — no interview needed, just a quick background check. Sounds good, right? Then comes the catch. They’ll ask for details like your National Insurance number or bank info, supposedly for a DBS check. And they could even request a training fee to get started. Then once you share your data or pay, they’ll vanish. But there are ways to catch them out before they steal your info or money: Red flags to watch for: Unsolicited contact from someone you’ve never spoken to. Vague job descriptions or roles that seem too good to be true. Requests for money upfront — legitimate employers will never ask for payment. Pressure to act quickly, often with a sense of urgency. Tip: Always verify job offers by checking the company’s official website or contacting them directly. If something feels off, trust your gut. Quishing: the QR code phishing threat. We see QR codes everywhere these days. And it’s no surprise, as they’re super handy. Whether you're checking out a restaurant menu or paying for parking — all it takes is a quick scan with your phone. But scammers have found ways to turn this modern convenience into a trap. How “quishing” works: Fraudsters print fake QR code stickers and place them over real ones in public spaces. This means that when you scan the code, it can take you to a convincing but fake website that asks for payment or login details. These sites often mimic legitimate services too, which makes it extra hard to spot the difference. How to stay safe: Inspect QR codes before scanning. If it looks like a sticker placed over another image, be very cautious. Check the URL after scanning. If the web address looks weird and suspicious, don’t enter any information. Just close that tab in your browser immediately. Avoid scanning codes in random public places, especially if they’re not part of an official display. Tip: Use a QR scanner app that previews the URL before opening it, giving you a chance to spot anything fishy. Trend Micro’s QR Scanner (for iOS and Android) is a great shout. The rise of deepfake scams. AI is helping make our lives easier in loads of amazing ways. But unfortunately, scammers are using it for nefarious reasons with deepfake technology. It can mimic voices and create videos that look incredibly real, making scams much tougher to spot. Here’s how deepfake tech works… Voice cloning: The classic “Hi Mum/Dad” scam is evolving, with fraudsters now grabbing audio clips from your social media accounts to clone a loved one’s voice. Yup, it’s pretty scary. One common tactic is sending a panicked voicemail or making a call asking for an urgent bank transfer. It might sound just like someone you care about, but it’s not really them. Deepfake videos and images: AI can generate fake videos of celebrities endorsing scam products or create compromising images for blackmail attempts. These visuals can be extremely realistic, making it hard to tell what’s genuine. Simple ways to protect yourself: Be very sceptical of urgent requests for money, even if the voice sounds familiar. Hang up and call back using the number you have saved for the person — to check what they’re saying is legit. Don’t trust videos or images at face value, especially if they’re asking for money or promoting a product. Tip: If something feels emotionally manipulative or rushed, take a moment to pause and verify. Conclusion: stay sharp, stay safe Scammers are always finding new tricks, but the basics of staying safe haven’t changed: Be wary of unsolicited contact. Slow down and don’t let urgency cloud your judgment. Verify everything before sharing personal information or making payments. Staying informed is also your best defence. With a little vigilance and awareness, you can stay one step ahead of those pesky scammers. And if you receive a suspicious text or call, report it by forwarding the message to 7726. It’s totally free and helps mobile providers block scam numbers. Have you ever encountered any of these scams? By sharing your experience in the comments below (without personal details!), you can help others stay safe.

Why you should let AI be your new note-taker!Blog
We’ve all been there – you’re sat in a meeting or lecture, hammering out notes, and struggling to keep up. And you’re not really able to pay attention to what’s actually being said either. That sounds like a lose-lose situation to us. Luckily, there’s a better way. The AI that’s stuffed into your smartphone can act as your very own personal assistant, transcribing all those convos and events for you. And apart from pressing record, you won’t even have to lift a finger. By using these tools, you’ll be more present, create perfect records of key conversations, and save yourself hours of time. What’s not to like? For the student: ace your lectures and seminars. Imagine being able to focus entirely on what your lecturer is saying, without worrying about taking notes. Well, with AI transcription, you can. It turns your phone into the ultimate study buddy, taking the lead while you sit back and learn. You’ll need a few apps to get going though. Otter.ai or your phone’s built-in Voice Memo app are both great places to start and are perfect for recording a lecture or seminar. Plus, they convert your audio into searchable docs, letting you track down quotes or certain topics later on. Here’s why we love them: Perfect study guide – Get a word-for-word transcript of the entire lecture. You won’t miss any of the important info. Searchable content – Need to find a specific point? Just search for keywords in the transcript and track it down fast. Focus on understanding – Instead of frantically scribbling notes, you can actually concentrate on understanding the material. For the professional: supercharge your meetings. Meetings can be a real double-edged sword. Yes, they’re incredibly important for collaboration, but taking notes can be a distraction. With AI transcription though, you can easily stay on top of your game. A lot of us work from home now, which means plenty of video calls. Get the Zoom AI Companion, Microsoft Copilot in Teams or Gemini in Google Meet, and you can transcribe these chats in real-time. You won’t miss any details. And can actually get involved in the discussion properly too! Here’s why we love them: Instant notes – Get shareable, bite-sized notes right after the meeting, so everyone is on the same page. Key action points – The software can spot and highlight next steps, making following up later on way easier. Summaries and missed meetings – Can’t attend the meeting? Don’t sweat it. Catch up afterwards with a detailed summary. For everyone: accessibility and capturing ideas. AI transcription isn’t just for the students and the pros. You can get loads out of it during your regular day-to-day too… Personal notes – Ever had a great idea when you’re out for a walk? Use voice dictation features in apps like ChatGPT to turn your spoken thoughts into text. There’ll be no more fumbling to type while you’re on the go. And you won’t have forgotten your grand plan by the time you get home either! Accessibility – Live transcription apps can offer real-time captions for people who are deaf or hard of hearing. And this makes events - or even just a normal chat - far more straightforward. Important things to keep in mind. While AI transcription is a seriously handy tool, It’s worth thinking about this stuff too… Get permission – Before you hit record, always get consent from whoever’s in the room. Transcribing private conversations or meetings without someone knowing about it isn’t cool. Give them a quick heads up, and you’ll be good to go. Check for accuracy – AI can sometimes struggle with strong accents or noisy environments. So, double check the final transcript to make sure the info is 100% accurate once the recording’s done. Battery and data usage – Recording and processing audio can do a number on your phone’s battery and will drain it quickly. Plus, if you’re using a cloud-based service for this, we’d suggest uploading any larger files over Wi-Fi. That way, you’ll avoid using up big chunks of your data allowance. So, whether it’s for smashing your studies, streamlining your day at the office – or just making life simpler – your phone’s AI transcription is on call whenever you need it. And guess what? You can start playing about with voice to text transcription right now. Try using the voice dictation button on your phone’s keyboard to reply to a message or jot down a quick note. Then let us know how it went in the comments down below!
Why you should let AI be your new note-taker!
Don't get caught out by Turkey's new eSIM ban.Blog
With summer holiday season in full swing, Turkey is a top destination for millions of us looking for some sun. You might have seen some news recently about Turkey’s telecom regulator (the BTK) banning access to the websites and apps of major eSIM providers like Holafly and Airalo. The good news, our Roam Beyond Add-ons for Turkey are completely unaffected by this ban. Why are we not affected? It’s super simple. The ban in Turkey targets third-party eSIM providers that require you to visit their website or use their app to buy and install a new eSIM. Our Roam Beyond add-ons work differently. They are a bolt-on to your existing iD Mobile plan. There’s no need to download or activate anything from a separate app that might be blocked. You just add the data bundle to your account and you’re good to go. Stay connected with Roam Beyond in Turkey. If you’re off to Turkey, our great value Roam Beyond add-ons have you covered. They’re a handy way to get a chunk of data and steer clear of any out-of-plan charges while you’re away. Choose the one that’s right for your trip: 2GB for £5 (lasts for 1 day) 10GB for £20 (lasts for 5 days) 20GB for £35 (lasts for 10 days) Top Tip: Buy before you fly! For a completely seamless experience, we always recommend buying your Roam Beyond add-on while you’re still in the UK. Your add-on will start as soon as you buy it, so it’ll be ready and waiting for you the moment you land. This is the best way to avoid any surprise charges. Forgot to buy? No problem! Despite the ban, you can still purchase a Roam Beyond add-on even after you’ve landed in Turkey. Just make sure your mobile data and roaming are switched off to avoid charges, connect to Wi-Fi (at the airport or your hotel), and then head to the iD Mobile app or my.idmobile.co.uk to buy your add-on. Easy!

Skip the airport queues with these amazing UK getaways.Blog
You don’t have to leave the country to enjoy a great holiday. In fact, some of the best escapes can be found right here in the UK. A staycation gives you the chance to explore somewhere new, take a break from the everyday, and relax. All without the hassle of airports or long travel times. Staycations come in all shapes and sizes. From beach breaks to woodland walks, there’s something for everyone — solo travellers, couples, families, nature-lovers, or festivalgoers. Here are a few ideas to get you started, plus some handy apps to help you plan (and enjoy) your perfect UK getaway. Coastal getaways. When the sun’s out, the UK’s coastline really comes into its own. With almost 100 Blue Flag beaches across the country, there’s no shortage of clean, safe, and beautiful spots to enjoy. Cornwall – A classic destination for sandy beaches, surf spots and charming coastal villages like St Ives and Padstow. Wales – The Pembrokeshire coast is a standout, with beaches like Barafundle Bay and Whitesands offering fantastic scenery and walking trails. Norfolk – Head to Wells-next-the-Sea or Holkham for wide open sands, dunes and peaceful walks. The Jurassic Coast – Stretching from East Devon to Dorset, this UNESCO World Heritage site has impressive cliffs, fossil hunting, and stunning beaches like Durdle Door. Top tip: Early mornings or late afternoons are great for avoiding the busiest times — and catching the best light for photos. Handy staycation apps. Once you’ve arrived and settled into your staycation spot, it’s great to have a few apps on hand to help you make the most of your downtime. Here are three free apps worth downloading before you go: GeoGuessr iOS & Android – Free with optional in-app purchases A fun, interactive game where you guess where in the world you are based on Street View images. There’s also a UK mode, so you can test your knowledge of local landmarks during quiet evenings or rainy afternoons. BBC Sounds iOS & Android – Free A great app for streaming podcasts, music mixes, audiobooks and radio shows. It’s perfect for beach days, car journeys or winding down at your accommodation. National Trust App iOS & Android – Free Useful for finding interesting places to explore nearby, from historic houses to nature reserves and coastline walks. It also includes opening times and visitor information. Festivals for all tastes. Live music, food, comedy, arts — the UK has a festival for just about every interest. You can go all in with camping, or just pop in for a day or two. Here are some of the biggest and best, now that Glastonbury’s done and dusted: All Points East (London) Dates: 22–25 August 2025 (TBC) Held in Victoria Park, this multi-day event blends big-name music acts with local community activities. Shazam iOS & Android – Free Heard a great song but missed the name? Use Shazam to identify tracks in a few seconds and save them to your playlist. Official festival apps Some major festivals have their own apps. They often include site maps, set times, artist info and real-time updates. Reading & Leeds app / Latitude app Camping and glamping. Getting close to nature doesn’t have to mean roughing it (unless you want to). Camping and glamping offer different ways to enjoy the great outdoors, depending on your style. What’s the difference? Camping – Usually involves pitching a tent and bringing your own gear. It’s basic, but budget-friendly and fun for those who enjoy a more traditional outdoor experience. Glamping – A step up in comfort. You can stay in pre-setup accommodation like treehouses, cabins, yurts or bell tents — often with proper beds, heating and even hot tubs! Popular locations The Lake District – Ideal for lakeside camping, hill walks, and picturesque views. Snowdonia – Great for more adventurous types, with mountain hikes and remote sites. South Downs – Easy to reach from London and perfect for countryside escapes. Isle of Skye – A bit of a journey but a beautiful, rugged landscape that’s well worth the trip. Helpful camping apps Pitchup iOS & Android – Free Lets you search and book camping, glamping and caravan sites across the UK with filters for facilities and location. What3Words iOS & Android – Free This app gives every location a unique three-word address. It’s great for finding a specific spot or meeting point, especially in remote areas. Park4Night iOS & Android – Free Designed for motorhome and campervan users, but useful for anyone looking for quiet places to stay overnight. Walking holidays and hiking routes. For a more relaxed (or active) escape, a walking holiday can be a great way to unwind. The UK has plenty of well-marked paths through stunning landscapes: South west coast path – 630 miles of coastal views through Somerset, Cornwall and Dorset. Hadrian’s wall path – Historic trails and countryside stretching across the north of England. Peak district – A mix of open moorland, limestone valleys and picturesque villages. There are loads of walking apps out there to help you find the right route. Three worth checking out are Komoot, AllTrails, and Footpath – an app where you can plan routes by drawing on the map. Go for it… A great holiday doesn’t always require a plane ticket, as there’s so much to see and do right here in the UK. Staycations offer you flexibility, variety, and the chance to rediscover what’s on your doorstep. Got a go-to UK holiday spot you’d recommend? Keep your phone safe and sound.Blog
We all keep a lot of personal data on our phones nowadays. Whether that’s passwords to social accounts, pics of the family, or sensitive banking info. And you obviously don’t want any of that to fall into the wrong hands. So, what can you do to make sure that your phone stays safe while you’re out and about? We’ve got you covered. Here are a few dos and don’ts when it comes to protecting your phone… Be aware of your surroundings. Just popping to the bar at the pub? Don’t leave your phone out on the table. It only takes a thief a few seconds to walk over and grab it. The same goes for when you’re wandering around, especially in big cities and places where there’s a lot of people. Crowds are the perfect hiding place for pickpockets. If you’re constantly flashing your phone, you’ll make yourself a target. Before you get your phone out to snap a photo of that famous landmark, have a look to see who might be near you. In places like London, bike and moped thieves are unfortunately fairly common now. They can zoom past you and lift your phone straight out of your hands. And you’ll have zero chance of chasing after them. So, keep an eye out. Use a strong password or biometrics. It probably goes without saying, but always lock your phone. A lot of people still leave their phones completely unlocked or use a weak password. If yours is 000000 (or 123456), you’ll want to get that updated sharpish. These are way too easy to guess, and if someone does nick your phone, they’ll be in and rummaging through it without even breaking a sweat. Better yet, if your phone has it, set up facial recognition or a fingerprint lock. They’re a lot harder for a criminal to crack. Plus, they’re super convenient when you want to log into your phone fast. Set up two-factor authentication. Two-factor authentication is just a fancy way of saying you need two forms of identification to log into an account. This’ll usually be a standard password and an extra code that gets sent to your phone or another gadget. It’ll add an extra layer of security – meaning that even if someone does get hold of your password, they’d still need that second code to get into your account. Turn on Find My Phone. Losing your phone can be an absolute nightmare. But with modern tech, it doesn’t have to be the end of the world. iPhones and Androids both have a helpful ‘Find My Phone’ feature. If you do end up leaving it on the train or at a local café, you can track its location – and go and get it – or lock it remotely from another device. But if there’s no chance of getting it back, you’ve still got options. You’ll be able to fully wipe all your data with the press of a button, stopping it from ever being stolen. And saving you a lot of stress if your phone does go walkabout! Find your IMEI number. If you type * #06# on your phone’s keypad, you can get your IMEI number. This little number can help you and/or the police to track it down if it’s stolen or gets lost. Just remember to write it down somewhere else so it’s not only on your phone. Avoid public Wi-Fi for sensitive tasks. When you don’t want to burn through your data, public Wi-Fi is great. But if you’re unlucky, it can also be a hacker’s playground. That’s because these networks are usually unprotected, making it easy for people to snoop on what you’re doing. So, if you do need to go on public Wi-Fi, avoid logging into important accounts like email or your bank. If you really have to use it for the important stuff, it’s worth getting a VPN (virtual private network). These make it a whole lot more difficult for hackers to see whatever you’re up to online. Back up your data regularly. Even if you do everything right, things can still go wrong. That’s why backing up your data every so often is definitely a good idea. Then if you do get pickpocketed on your city break or drop your phone in the river on your run, you won’t lose all of it. iCloud and Google Drive are both great shouts for this, letting you store contacts, photos, and any other important files safely in the cloud. Your ultimate guide to streaming sport this summer!Blog
Sports fans are in for a treat this summer. It’s jam-packed with huge tournaments, races and more – and to celebrate, we're giving you the chance to win a HISENSE 55E6NTUK 55" Smart 4K Ultra HD HDR LED TV! If you don’t want to miss a second of the non-stop action, we’re here to help. We’ll show you how to stream all the unmissable moments live on your iPhone or Android. And we’ll explain how to get your phone plan prepped, whether you’re watching at home or cheering from the sidelines abroad. Just follow this handy guide to catch every goal, match point and chequered flag without any nasty surprises on your mobile bill, and find out how to enter our incredible giveaway. Let’s get going… First things first: Get your data plan match fit. Streaming sport can use up a big chunk of your data. Meaning it’s a good idea to check your plan before kick-off to see how much data you’ve got to play with. Watching in standard definition can use up to 1GB per hour, while high definition will triple that, gobbling up a whopping 3GB or so every 60 minutes. If the football goes to extra time and pens, it’s safe to say you’ll be using a lot. So, if you’re planning on watching every single second, now’s the perfect time to think about upgrading. With a new plan, you might even be able to get more data for your money! Watching in the UK: Wimbledon & British GP. Most sport nowadays is locked behind a paywall. You don’t need an expensive subscription here though. You can catch two of the UK’s biggest sporting events for free on your phone… Wimbledon (June 30 – July 13) – Arguably the biggest grand slam in the tennis calendar, Wimbledon is always ace. And it’ll serve up some big hitting matchups, with world number one Jannik Sinner looking to bounce back from his final defeat at the French Open. But if Carlos Alcaraz – last year’s winner – has anything to say about it, we could be in for another titanic battle for the trophy. You can stream matches from each round live on BBC iPlayer. British Grand Prix (July 4 – July 6) – Hamilton’s switch to Ferrari hasn’t exactly gone to plan so far. With zero wins, and zero finishes on the podium, Lewis has a lot to do to climb the standings. Could home advantage at Silverstone help him take the top spot? Find out and watch the race live on the All 4 app. Roaming in Europe: Tour de France & Belgian GP. Jetting off to Europe? You can use your phone just like you do at home (in certain countries) with iD Mobile’s Roam Free service . You’ll have pretty much the same amount of minutes, texts and data from your regular plan (up to a 30GB fair usage limit), all available at no extra cost. Result. Tour de France (July 5 – July 27) – The world’s most gruelling cycle race pedals onto screens at the start of July. And you can see every sprint and lightning-fast descent on Eurosport and Discovery+. We’re just glad it’s not us doing those punishing hill climbs. Belgian Grand Prix (July 25 – July 27) – More motorsport. Yes please! The F1 hops over the channel with a trip to the Spa-Francorchamps circuit – the longest track on the current race calendar. To see all 44 laps, you’ll need a Sky Sports subscription (also accessible via Sky Go), or a NOW TV pass. Cheering on the Lionesses at the Euros? If you’ve been lucky enough to bag tickets to the footie over in Switzerland, we make it easy to stay connected. The land of skiing and top choc is one of our ‘ Roam Beyond ’ destinations. What’s that then? Well, depending on how long it takes for England to be crowned champions (or get knocked out in devastating fashion), you can buy a one day, five day, or ten day data add-on. Just make sure to sort this before you start using your data over there. Otherwise, you could be in for a big ol’ bill. Women’s Euros (July 2 – July 27) – Can Sarina Wiegman’s side make it back-to-back Euros titles? With a tough looking group (France and the Netherlands are no push overs) it’s not going to be an easy one. And with a serious turnover in the squad – we miss you already, Mary Earps – the team isn’t as experienced as it once was. You’ll be able to catch each match over on BBC iPlayer and ITVX. From managing your data at home to understanding roaming in France, Belgium and Switzerland, you should now be all set to stream this epic summer of sport. Before you head off though, double check your plan (can you upgrade?) and roaming options in the iD Mobile app . Giveaway time! Got a favourite team you'll be cheering on this summer? Whether you're following the football, dreaming of a Wimbledon win, or have your eyes glued to the Tour de France, we want to know who you're supporting! Tell us who you are supporting this summer in sport in the comments below for a chance to win a HISENSE 55E6NTUK 55" Smart 4K Ultra HD HDR LED TV—perfect for watching all the action in stunning detail. The winner will be picked at random, so keep an eye on your inbox or DMs for a message from us. But hurry—the competition closes on 21st July at 23:59!

Samsung's new foldable lineup has a surprise new member!Blog
Samsung has just dropped its latest lineup of foldable phones — their slimmest and lightest models to date. They’re packing even smarter camera tech and Galaxy AI too, helping you create cool content and tick tasks off faster. Read our recap to find out more about the brand-new Galaxy Z Fold7 and Z Flip7. Plus, a surprising budget-friendly model… Galaxy Z Fold 7: productivity powerhouse. The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 is a phone and tablet rolled into one. Folded, it works just like a regular smartphone. But when you open it up, you're greeted to a huge screen. Perfect for multitasking with different apps, watching films, and playing games on the go. Here are some of the new model’s standout features: Ultra-thin and lightweight design: The Z Fold7 is only 8.9 mm when folded and 4.2 mm unfolded. It weighs just 215 grams too, making it even lighter than the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra. That’s pretty amazing considering that the cover and main screens are wider this time around. Speaking of… 8-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X main display: The Z Fold7 boasts the biggest screen ever seen on a Galaxy phone. It’s 11% larger than the previous gen’s foldout display, so there’s extra room to run apps side by side. And combined with the new One UI 8, the bumped-up screen offers more intuitive ways to use AI with less jumping between apps. Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy processor: Samsung’s latest flagship foldable runs on their most powerful chip for Galaxy devices. It’s tuned to make AI tasks like real-time translation and Generative Edit even faster and smoother. Ultra 200MP camera: With the same camera system as the S25 Ultra, the Z Fold7 gives you incredible detail in every shot. It also uses AI to automatically boost lighting and realism, so your photos and videos look vibrant and ready to share. Galaxy Z Flip 7: small but mighty. The Galaxy Z Flip7 is a full-sized smartphone that folds to easily fit in your pocket. It’s compact and stylish without sacrificing flagship features. These are some of our fave things about their latest flip: Bigger and brighter FlexWindow: An upgraded 4.1-inch cover screen lets you do more without even opening the phone. Reply to messages, check your calendar — it’s all right there at a glance. Plus, Galaxy AI and Google Gemini have been optimised to work on the new FlexWindow. So, you can get extra AI assistance even when the phone’s closed. AI-enhanced cameras: A dual rear cam setup with 50MP Wide and 12MP Ultra-Wide lenses mean you can take crisp, vivid shots in any light. Capture sweeping landscapes or flawless selfies straight from the cover screen. And for hands-free videos, just unfold the Flip7 and prop it up to use Flex Mode. Long-lasting 4,300 mAh battery: The Flip7 packs the biggest battery ever in a Galaxy Z Flip phone, giving you up to 31 hours of video playback on a single charge. That means more time streaming, scrolling, and snapping without scrambling for your charger. Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE: the budget-friendly surprise. It's a huge deal when Samsung brings out one new phone, let alone three. Unveiled at their Galaxy Unpacked July 2025 event, it’s the Galaxy Z Flip7 FE that’s been stealing most of the headlines. That’s because it’s Samsung’s most affordable foldable yet. That doesn’t mean compromising on features though. It’s got the same sharp AMOLED screen tech of the Flip7, plus Samsung’s latest Galaxy AI features. Now Brief provides helpful updates (including weather, calendar events, and commute alerts) on the cover screen. And it’ll even give you music and video suggestions based on your interests. The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip7 FE also has the powerful 50MP FlexCam found in the Flip7. So, if you love creating content, you can easily capture hands-free selfies and videos in Flex Mode. Upgrade now! Whether you’re wowed by the screen space of the Z Fold7, the style of the Z Flip7, or the value of the Z Flip7 FE — Samsung’s new foldables have something for everyone. If you fancy upgrading to one now, check them out right here on the iD Mobile website. Which of Samsung’s latest smartphones would you choose? Let us know in the comments below!

The savvy traveller’s guide to staying connected in the UK.Blog
You don’t have to hop on a plane for a great holiday. The UK’s full of top spots for a weekend away or a full-on minibreak. But wherever you are, you probably want to stay connected. Otherwise, how are you meant to share those stunning snaps on the Gram? Well, with our handy guide, you won’t be offline for long… Connecting to train and coach Wi-Fi. Just because you’re on a train or a coach, it doesn’t mean you can’t keep up with the group chat. Most have a special Wi-Fi service onboard that’ll let you use your phone as normal. Getting online isn’t difficult either… Check for free Wi-Fi services – Open up your Wi-Fi settings and look for the network name (SSID) that’s specific to the transport you’re on – e.g. Southwest Rail Wi-Fi. Tap on it, and you’ll be asked for your email address. Enter that and you should be ready to browse, message and more. Stay safe on public Wi-Fi – Always check the network is secured. If you’re unsure, ask a member of staff before you decide to hit connect. And rule number one – never access any details that are sensitive, like your banking info, passwords, or your email account while you’re connected. It’s better to be safe than sorry. 4G on the London underground. The tube is the easiest (and fastest) way to get around the capital. But you’re underground, so surely your connection is going to be pretty spotty? Wrong. Through iD Mobile, you get full 4G functionality. Here’s how to use it safely and effectively… Make sure you’ve got a iD Mobile SIM – If you want to use 4G on the tube, make sure you’ve got a iD Mobile SIM card. Turn off auto-connect – Just like with train and coach Wi-Fi, turn off the auto-connect feature to stop your phone from joining insecure networks without your say so. Avoid sensitive info – Don’t access any important info like bank accounts or your email on public networks. It’s better to wait until you’re back home and on your own Wi-Fi for that. Use a VPN – For an extra layer of security, you can always download a VPN. It’ll encrypt your data and protect it from prying eyes. Stay alert – Keep an eye on who’s around you. The tube can get packed – especially during rush hour – and shoulder surfers might be watching your screen. Hotspotting: share your connection . Hotspotting is a handy feature that lets you share your 4G/5G connection with others. And it’s great if you need to get online with your laptop or tablet too. Follow these steps and you’ll be good to go… Enable hotspotting – On your mobile, go to your settings and switch on your personal hotspot. If you want to, you can add a password for some added protection. Connect other devices – On the device you want to connect, select your phone’s Wi-Fi network and enter the password. Save battery – Hotspotting can drain your battery quickly, so keep a power bank handy. Manage data usage – Don’t go overboard with your data – especially if you’re on a limited plan. You can usually monitor your data usage in your phone’s settings. Wi-Fi calling: stay connected in poor signal areas. Wi-Fi calling is a lifesaver when you’re in an area with spotty coverage. Setting it up and using it is simple too… Check phone compatibility – If you’ve got a modern smartphone, it should support Wi-Fi calling. But it’s always good to double check. Enable Wi-Fi calling – Head to your settings, find Wi-Fi calling and turn it on. You might have to type in your phone number for verification. Connect to Wi-Fi – Make sure you’re connected to a Wi-Fi network. This could be at a coffee shop, a hotel, or pretty much any place with a reliable connection. Make calls – Now you can make and receive calls as usual, but they’ll use the Wi-Fi network instead of your cellular signal. General device safety tips. Keeping your phone safe is just as important as staying connected… Turn off Bluetooth and Wi-Fi when you’re not using it – It doesn’t just save the battery. It’ll lower the risk of any unauthorized access too. Activate find my phone – Switch on features like Find my Phone to track down your device if it’s lost or stolen. You can set this up in your phone’s settings. Use a case and screen protector – A simple, but a good one. A solid, sturdy case and screen protector can save you a lot of trouble – and a big repair bill! Got any tips we haven’t mentioned? Tell us all about them in the comments down below!

The super-fast way to delete thousands of old photos.Blog
You’re on the beach, the sun is setting, and you’re just about to capture that perfect vista. Then BAM. You pull out your phone, but instead of the camera, you get the dreaded ‘Storage Full’ notification. Annoying, right? We’ve all been there. The biggest culprit is usually your photo gallery. If it’s anything like ours, it’s probably clogged up with thousands of screenshots, duplicate photos and out of focus images. Luckily though, there’s loads of quick ways to get back those precious gigabytes. We’ll show you exactly how to clean up your gallery, make space for new memories, and get your phone back to top speeds! Let’s dive in… Start with the tools you already have. Before you download any new apps, check out the free clean-up tools that are hidden away in your phone’s photo app. They’ll help you find and delete duplicates, blurry pics and old screenshots. And they make the whole process super straightforward. For iPhone users: The Apple Photos app has a nifty feature called the ‘Duplicates’ album. Can’t find it? It’s tucked away under ‘Utilities’. It’ll automatically find and group identical (or very similar) snaps, making it nice and easy to merge duplicates and keep only the best quality version. This is how to find it… Open the Photos app. Tap on the ‘Albums’ tab. Scroll down to the ‘Utilities’ section and press ‘Duplicates’. Look over the groups of duplicate photos. Tap on ‘Merge’ to keep the best version and delete the rest. For Android users: Google Photos also has a handy ‘Manage storage’ section that’s great for decluttering your gallery. In here, you’ll get clever ‘Clean up’ suggestions, which highlight large videos, naff photos and the like that you probably don’t need anymore. Here’s how to use it… Open the Google Photos app. Tap on the ‘More’ tab (the three horizontal lines). Select ‘Manage storage’. Press ‘Clean up’ to see the suggestions. Review and delete the photos and videos you don’t want. Make cleaning fun with ‘swipe to delete apps’. At the end of the day, it’s admin. But cleaning out your photo gallery doesn’t have to be a massive chore. With swipe to delete apps, you can turn the task into a way more interactive experience. Think of it like a dating app, but for your pics. Instead of swiping left and right on potential matches, you’re swiping to keep or delete photos. For iOS users: Slider makes managing your photos simple. Its clean interface lets you whizz through your camera roll and sort your faves from the fails. Here’s how to get started… Download Slider from the App Store. Open the app and give it access to your photos. Start swiping! If you like the pic, swipe right. Hate it? Swipe left. The app also picks out any duplicate images and rubbish photos. And you won’t have to dig through your gallery to find them yourself. For Android users: Sponge is the Android equivalent of Slider, and it’s just as satisfying. With its speedy swiping mechanic, you can tidy up your gallery in no time. Check out this quick guide… Download Sponge from the Google Play Store. Fire up the app and let it access your photos. Swipe through your gallery. Swipe right to keep a photo or left to get rid of it. Sponge will also pick out duplicates and low-quality images, helping you make quick decisions. Enjoy your newfound freedom! Once you’ve given your phone a bit of a spring clean, you should notice a big difference in its performance. You won’t just have more space for new apps, playlists and pics. Hopefully, your phone will run a lot faster and smoother too. That means apps will load in a flash, letting you multitask and swap between them without stuttering. Throw in improved battery life – a chocka photo gallery slows things right down and uses more juice – and it’s a win-win situation. Remember though… Just to be on the safe side, it’s smart to back up your photos before you delete anything. After all, you might remove one by accident. And if you do, it could be gone for good. You can use cloud storage services like iCloud, Google Photos or Dropbox to store a copy of all your pictures and videos. Give these tips a try and share your results with us in the comments down below. Got any little hacks we’ve missed? Tell us about those too!

Find Your Balance: Navigating Screen Time in a Digital World.Blog
Finding a healthy balance with our screen time is increasingly vital for our mental well-being, especially as highlighted during Mental Health Awareness Week in May. While our smartphones offer incredible connectivity, excessive use can contribute to stress and anxiety. At iD Mobile, we understand this delicate balance and importance of having an intentional relationship with technology. Our flexible plans and data management tools are designed to empower you to take control. Some of the ways you can make use of this are: Choose a plan that fits your lifestyle (and screen time goals): With iD Mobile's Pay As You Go plans , you're not stuck with a set amount of data. You can choose a different bundle every month, so if you want to cut back on your online time, you can enforce this by picking a smaller data package. See exactly where your data is going: The iD Mobile app shows you how much data you're using and which apps are using the most. This helps you understand where your online time is spent, especially on things that eat up a lot of data like videos and social media. Get alerts when you're using too much: You can set up warnings in the iD Mobile app to tell you when you're getting close to your data limit. This can be a helpful nudge to think about whether you really need to keep scrolling! Set a limit on your spending: You can put a cap on how much you spend on your iD Mobile bill. Knowing there's a financial limit can make you think twice about using a lot of data on things that increase your screen time, like going down a rabbit hole of YouTube videos! Finally, if you're struggling with your mental health, we offer 20% off your first month of online therapy with BetterHelp, through our iD Perks platform.

Lost the remote again? Your smartphone can save the day!Blog
So, you’re settled on the couch after a long day, ready to binge your favourite show or dive into a gaming session. Then you discover the shocking news - the remote is missing! Or worse, your controller dies mid-match. It’s a small frustration, but so annoying. What if you could save things by using something that’s already right in your hand? Like… your smartphone. Your smartphone - yes, the same one you use to scroll social media and send texts - can double as a powerful controller. From gaming to streaming to smart home management, your phone might be the only remote you’ll ever need. Here’s how easy it is to make the most of it. Level up your gaming: use your phone as a controller. Gaming is more mobile than ever. If you’ve ever dreamed of playing your PS5 or Xbox games from different rooms in your home (or even while traveling) your phone makes it possible. There’s no need to hog the family TV or be tied to the living room anymore. For PlayStation players. Got a PS4 or PS5? The PS Remote Play app is a game-changer (no pun intended) that lets you stream your console games straight to your phone over Wi-Fi. Once the app is installed, just sign in with your PlayStation Network account and you’re in. You’ll even get virtual buttons and joysticks on your screen, so you don’t need a physical controller to play. For Xbox fans. Xbox offers a similar experience through the Xbox app. With it, you can stream games from your console to your phone and even manage game downloads, view achievements, and chat with friends. It’s perfect for quick gaming sessions when the main TV is in use or when you’re away from home. For a console-like experience. On-screen controls are fine, but if you’re after something more tactile, there are awesome mobile accessories like the Razer Kishi or GameSir controllers. These devices snap onto your phone and provide physical buttons, thumbsticks, and triggers - basically turning your phone into a Nintendo Switch-like handheld. They’re perfect for longer gaming sessions or more competitive play. The only remote you’ll ever need. Your phone’s utility doesn’t stop at gaming. It can also replace a whole drawer full of remotes. TVs, streaming devices, sound systems and lots more can often be controlled right from your smartphone. Smart TVs Most modern TVs come with their own companion apps. If you’ve got a Samsung, download SmartThings. For LG TVs, grab the LG ThinQ app. These apps let you adjust the volume, change inputs, launch apps like Netflix, and even type in search bars with your phone’s keyboard (way faster than hunting and pecking with a remote). This is especially useful when your physical remote is lost, broken, or just mysteriously missing batteries (again). Streaming devices Devices like Roku, Amazon Fire TV, and Google Chromecast all have free apps that turn your phone into a full-featured remote. Want to pause, rewind, or search by voice? No problem. In fact, these apps often offer more intuitive navigation than the original remotes! You can even use your phone to launch apps, cast videos, or mirror your screen for presentations or family photos—turning your living room into a mini theater. Beyond entertainment: smart home control. Your smartphone doesn’t just control games and shows—it can also manage your entire smart home. If you’ve ever thought about making your living space more tech-friendly, your phone is the perfect hub to start with. Lights, thermostats and more Apps like Google Home, Apple Home, and Amazon Alexa allow you to control compatible smart lights, thermostats, cameras, doorbells, and more—all from one place. For example: Dim the lights without getting up. Adjust the thermostat without leaving the couch. Check your video doorbell when someone rings. Start the coffee maker before you get out of bed. Appliances and extras Even appliances like washing machines, refrigerators, robot vacuums, and air purifiers now have companion apps. Want to start a wash cycle from work? Or get a notification when your fridge door’s left open? You can do that. As smart home tech becomes more common, your phone becomes the ultimate command centre. You’ll be able to control dozens of devices across different rooms or even when you’re away. Final thoughts - the remote that's always with you. Your smartphone is much more than just a communication device. Whether you’re deep into gaming, browsing your favourite shows, or dimming the lights for movie night, it has your back. The best part? You already own it. No need to buy an expensive universal remote or worry about replacing dead batteries in five different controllers. So why not give it a try? Head to your app store and search for your console, smart TV brand, or smart home device. Download the companion app and start exploring all the things your phone can control. It’s easier than you think - and lots of fun too. Already using your phone as a controller? Share your favourite apps or tips in the comments! We'd love to hear how you’re making tech work smarter for you.

What the new EU phone labels actually mean for your wallet.Blog
Ever wondered how long your new phone will really last? Or how easy it might be to get it fixed? From 20th June 2025, getting the answers to these questions is about to get a whole lot easier. New, standardised energy labels are being rolled out for all new smartphones and tablets sold in the EU and right here in the UK. Think of them like the stickers you see on your telly or washing machine, but packed with even more useful info. This is all part of a bigger plan to cut down on waste, make devices last longer, and help you make genuinely sustainable choices. Here at iD Mobile, we want to make sure you’re in the know. So, let’s break down what these new labels mean for you. What’s the big idea? The European Union has brought in these new regulations to help us all make more informed and sustainable choices when buying new tech. The aim is to give you a clearer picture of a device's energy efficiency, how long its battery should last, how tough it is, and how easily it can be repaired. It’s all about promoting transparency from manufacturers and helping to reduce electronic waste – a big win for both your wallet and the planet! What’s on the label? This isn't just a sticker about energy use – it's a clear, at-a-glance summary of what really counts. You'll find it on the box in-store and on the product page online. It features a series of simple ratings: Energy Efficiency Class (A-G): The familiar A-G scale tells you how much power the device uses. 'A' is the most efficient, which is great for your bills and the planet. Battery Life Per Charge: This gives you a standardised estimate of how many hours a full battery will power your device, making it easier to compare different models fairly. Battery Cycle Rating: This crucial number tells you how many full charge and discharge cycles the battery can handle before its capacity drops below 80%. The minimum is 800 cycles, but a higher number means a longer-lasting battery. Drop-Resistance Class (A-E): We've all had that heart-in-mouth moment. This score (from 'A' for most rugged to 'E' for least) gives you an idea of how well the device can handle accidental tumbles. Repairability Score (A-E): A real game-changer. This score tells you how easy it is to get the device repaired. The higher the grade, the simpler and likely cheaper it will be to fix if something goes wrong. Ingress Protection (IP) Rating: You may have seen this before. The IP rating indicates how resistant the device is to dust and water. There will also be a QR code on the label that links to the EU’s EPREL database, where you can dig into even more detail if you fancy. More than just a label. Alongside these handy labels, the EU has also introduced new ‘ecodesign’ rules for manufacturers. These are designed to make sure devices last longer and are easier to repair. These rules mean that: Manufacturers must make critical spare parts, like batteries and screens, available for at least seven years after a model is no longer sold. You’ll be guaranteed to receive software updates for at least five years, keeping your device secure and up-to-date for longer. Professional repairers will have fair access to the necessary software and firmware to carry out repairs. What does this mean for you? These new rules put the power back in your hands. You can now compare phones and tablets not just on camera specs or screen size, but on their long-term value and environmental footprint. So, when you're browsing for your next phone, take a moment to read the label. Look for high grades in battery life, repairability, and drop resistance. A good repair score often means less cost and hassle if a part breaks, while strong durability ratings mean your device can better withstand the bumps and scrapes of daily life.

Simple tricks for taking incredible concert shots on any phone.Blog
Got tickets to see your favourite band or artist? We bet you can’t wait to catch them in action and rock your friends’ social feeds with some epic shots. But gigs aren’t the easiest places to snap photos on your phone. As when the lights go down, it can make pics look blurry and blown out. So, we’ve put together this guide that’ll help you take amazing concert photos you’ll actually want to share. Plus, we’ve highlighted some of the best phones for capturing awesome live music moments — from the front row all the way to the back! Quick tips for any smartphone. No matter what phone you have, there are a few simple tricks which can make a big difference right away: Control the lights: Don’t just point and shoot. Tap your screen to focus on the artist and slide your finger down to lower the exposure. This will make sure those bright stage lights don’t turn your musical hero into a glowing blob. Avoid digital zoom: It can be tempting to zoom in when you’re nowhere near the stage. But this often makes things grainy, so it’s better to just take a wide shot that you can crop later. Got a phone with a proper optical telephoto lens? It should keep things looking sharp even when zoomed in. Use burst mode: If your phone has a burst mode, turn it on and hold down the camera button to take lots of pics in quick succession. It’s great for capturing unexpected, high-energy moments and gives you more choice to find that one perfect shot. Capture the atmosphere: It’s cool getting close-ups of the artist you’re seeing. But try to take photos that capture the energy of the concert too. Have the crowd in the foreground and get some of the stage setup in there. Keep your phone stable: To stop stage lights from looking streaky and ruining your good work, you’ll want to minimise camera shake as much as possible. That’s why you should use both hands when taking your shots, even if they’re portrait pics. Clean your phone’s lens: This is an obvious one. But pocket lint and greasy fingerprints (gigs get pretty sweaty, after all) can add a murky filter you definitely don’t want. Just give the lens a quick wipe on your t-shirt or hoodie before you start shooting. Upgrade your view: the best phones for concerts. Many of today’s smartphones have pro-grade cameras. They’re literally like having a DSLR that fits in your pocket. So, if you’re a serious gig-goer with an old, sub-par phone — you should think about upgrading to something that’ll make your shots shine. Here are a few of our faves: iPhone 16 Pro: Apple’s latest and greatest phone has a 5x optical zoom telephoto lens, which lets you get closer to the action without losing detail. And with its Camera Control button, you can slide your finger to quickly toggle through lenses and make other on-the-fly adjustments. You’ll never miss a big moment! Google Pixel 9: The Pixel uses the power of Ai to not only keep images looking sharp, but to help you edit too. Someone’s hand in the way of an otherwise perfect shot? There’s a tool that can make it disappear like magic. Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra: If you usually go for seats at the back, this mighty mobile’s 100x space zoom ensures crystal-clear pics from super far away. It’s packing plenty of Ai smarts too, which boost low-light performance and reduce noise so your snaps look vibrant and crisp. The big debate: capture the moment or live in it? A sea of smartphones is a common sight at most gigs. And it can be pretty annoying when someone in front blocks your view with their device’s screen. But with the cost of gig tickets these days, it’s also understandable why you’d want to capture and relive a show you’ve paid so much to see. Here’s a look from each side: Living in the moment: It’s not often that we get a break from screens. So, for some people, gigs are an opportunity to get away from their tech and feel fully present without any distractions. Capturing the memory: On the other hand, memories fade with time. And today’s smartphones make it so easy to record a quick video of your favourite song or snap a pic you can share on Insta. Find a balance: Or, you could just take a few stunning photos (using our tips) during the first couple of songs. Then, put your phone away and enjoy the rest of the show. Rock on! We hope our guide helps you capture some really cool pics at your next gig. Who have you got tickets to see this summer? Let us know in the comments below! And if you’ve got some extra photography tips we missed, we’d love to hear about them too…
