Cultural festivals this autumn.Blog
Just because Summer's over, it doesn't mean all the big festivals are too. 2024 still has plenty of life left in it, with some huge international events coming up this autumn. From Oktoberfest in Germany to the MassKara Festival in the Philippines. So, when are they happening? This article is your tour guide to some of the most fun and vibrant cultural celebrations you can see before the end of the year. And we've recommended some top phone apps to help you make the most of them too. Oktoberfest. When: September 21st – October 6th Where: Munich, Germany This Bavarian bash isn't all about beer. But let's be honest, it's a huge part of it! From late September to early October, the city of Munich turns into a massive party of traditional costumes, hearty food, and yes — litres upon litres of frothy beer as far as the eye can see. The origins of the festival can be traced back to 1810, as a celebration of the marriage of the crown prince of Bavaria to Princess Therese. And over two centuries later, it's more popular than ever. With the festival attracting millions of guests over the two weeks each year. If you're planning on making the trip to Munich, we'd recommend downloading the MVGO app ( iOS , Android ). It's an all-in-one public transport app that'll help you navigate Munich and the surrounding area. Germany is one of our many roam-free destinations too, which means you can use your UK monthly allowances of minutes, texts, and data (up to 30GB) without any additional charges applied. MassKara Festival. When: October 27th Where: Bacolod, Philippines Next stop — the Philippines! The MassKara Festival in Bacolod City is all about celebrating positivity and resilience in the face of adversity, with people coming together to smile and just have a good time. The event was created in the 1980s as a way of lifting the spirits of the community after a series of tragic events. You can expect streets filled with dancers wearing colourful costumes and bright masks with wide grins. There’s some amazing music and even parades to watch too. Plus, there are often digital art installations and dazzling light shows that blend perfectly with the traditional elements. So, make sure you've sharpened your photography skills before heading off to the airport. As there will be plenty of opportunities to light up your Instagram feed with some incredible shots and videos. Check out our top tips for taking photos on your phone for some pointers. Day of the Dead. When: November 1st - November 2nd Where: Mexico Don't worry, Day of the Dead isn't some kind of zombie apocalypse. It's a Mexican celebration where families honour their departed loved ones with vibrant altars, sugar skulls, and marigold-strewn parades. It's the complete opposite of sombre! And if you want a real feast for the eyes, head to Mexico City where the biggest celebrations take place. There's much debate over the origins of Day of the Dead. But a lot of historians believe it can be traced back thousands of years to the Aztecs, who honoured the spirits of their ancestors and the gods of the underworld in a month-long festival. Sounds spooky. To get in the spirit yourself, how about downloading the Dulce's Day of the Dead app ( iOS )? It's a sticker pack for iMessages that'll liven up your chats with family and friends. Or use the YouCam Perfect app ( iOS , Android ) to create your own custom sugar skull photos with templates, stickers, and other cool effects. Loy Krathong Festival. When: November 15th Where: Thailand Last but not least, let's float over to Thailand for the Loy Krathong festival. This beautiful event sees people release delicate rafts (called 'krathongs') decorated with candles, incense, and flowers onto rivers and lakes. It's believed to carry away bad luck and honour the water spirits. And while celebrated mostly in Thailand, this serene festival’s roots can actually be traced back to India. Is Thailand too far to travel this fall? Try the OnePen AR app for iOS and Android . It lets you create a unique 3D krathong step-by-step on your phone, which you can then place and see in the real world using clever AR (augmented reality) tech. It lets you take part in the Loy Krathong festival — no matter where you are. Have you ever attended one of these festivals? Or was there a different cultural celebration you went to this year? We'd love to hear all about your experience in the comments below!
iD Mobile wins big!Blog
Here at iD Mobile, we've bagged some pretty big awards! Uswitch, Which? and other top industry names have crowned us winners in a whole host of tough categories. Now, we know us Brits aren’t ones to brag, but here’s a full rundown of all the awards we’ve scooped up so far. If you're looking for a reason to switch to iD Mobile, this might just be it… Uswitch. The folks over at Uswitch didn’t just give us one award, oh no. They gave us two! I guess you could say that we’re twice as good as everyone else. What makes it even better though, is that both were voted for by you, the public. First up was the ‘Best Network for Data’. We like to think that we offer pretty generous mobile data caps (that also don’t cost an arm and a leg), and it seems like you lot agreed. Apparently, our free EU roaming was a big plus for us too. Hot on its heels was the ‘Best Handset Contract Value for Money’ award. We’re all cutting back a bit at the moment with the cost-of-living crisis, so it’s super important for us to give you the best value deals we can. And with the best handset contract for money (with more competitive deals that are tough to beat on price) we’ve done exactly that. Which? You’ve definitely heard of Which? These guys look at everything from washing machines and cars, to airlines and energy suppliers – comparing them all to help you make the best decision. And of course, the same goes for phone networks. Our SIM only plans have received a Which? Great Value endorsement for the second year in a row. Ookla Speedtest Awards. If you didn’t know it already, we’re powered by Three – the UK’s fastest 5G network. Don’t just take our word for it though, the numbers don’t lie. The Ookla Speedtest awards look at loads of mobile providers side by side to see whose coverage is the fastest. And when it comes to 5G speeds, nobody can keep up with us. For us to snag the ‘Fastest 5G Mobile Network’, Three hit a Speed Score of 224.60. Add to that median download speeds of 255.23 Mbps and a median upload of speed of around 14.47 Mbps, and you’ve got one lightning quick phone. There’s none of that annoying Netflix buffering here. Or sluggish downloads when you want to listen to the latest episode of your favourite podcast. Still not sure why tons of customers choose iD Mobile? How about the great service (we’re talking 99% UK coverage), fantastic features – like data roaming, data rollover and 5G as standard on all our plans – and top deals on the latest phones and SIM Only deals. Sounds pretty good, doesn’t it?
